Games for which there are two soundtracks, and both are good

@Syzygy#19178 Ah good question, it‘s because it was bundled with my mom’s Windows 95 PC. Interesting thing I‘m reading now is that this bundled version was the only way to play Sonic CD on computers in ’95, not being sold in stores until a DirectX version came along in ‘96. Yeah, it would be pretty strange if someone’s first console was a MegaCD haha

@wexley#19201

I also used to play the PC version as my first Sonic CD experience. I used to put the disc in my CD player so I could listen to the tunes too.

Ah, Sonic 3D Blast is a great example! also there's a lot of richard jacques in these remakes, heh heh.

The wily wars stuff alllllmost sounds like they tried to run the nes patterns through the genesis chip, though it's not quite to that level..

SPEAKING OF Richard Jaques. Project Gotham Racing 1 is essentially an enhanced Metropolis Street Racer with the biggest change being the removal of the Richard Jaques soundtrack. I mean both are per the topic good, but man, it is a very different vibe. The Dreamcast version having that super Sega (Sonic R) vibe versus the Xbox's license hot bands of the time thing.

But hey, PGR allows for a custom soundtrack and I have of course loaded the MSR soundtrack into it.

Oh hey, thought of another one. The first 25,000 copies of Game Boy Tetris had a different Type A theme. Rather than the now-ubiquitous ‘Korobeïniki’ Tetris theme, v1.0 had ‘Minuet’:

@billy#19252 Again. I NEVER knew this. Amazing!

This video on the GST channel sent me down something of a rabbit hole researching FIFA International Soccer 1993-4, which seemed to have no fewer than four (maybe more??) distinct soundtracks across the SNES, MD, Mega CD, and 3DO releases, each of which has its own funky charm:

Sonic seems to be rife with this stuff. I recently learned from a comment John Linneman made on a podcast that the PC game Sonic & Knuckles Collection compiled the Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles content but featured an entirely MIDI-based soundtrack. For this most part this sountrack isn't different from the Genesis FM synth original per se, though according to the linked source:

>

Some tracks (Carnival Night Zone, IceCap Zone, Launch Base Zone, the Sonic 3 Credits theme, Knuckles' theme, the sub-boss music from Sonic 3, and the Competition main menu) was replaced with music taken from an early prototype of the game.

It seems like they mostly replaced tracks that Michael Jackson had some hand in, so take from that what you will. Unfortunately most of the replaced tracks are not too great, so that might disqualify them for this thread, but you can take a listen for yourself:

I forgot where I saw this, but I think there was a sonic 3 beta that came to light with those tracks in it, confirming that the replaced tracks in the PC collection were indeed the original tracks for those levels and the MJ version actually replaced them. They just got put back in for the PC release. Super interesting cause it was assumed for a long time that they were written specifically for the PC version.

@billy#19252 I did not know this either! wild times

also @kory these fifas are a great example of the thing I'm talking about!! real good stuff.

HEY! I thought I was going nuts, because this thread kept making me think of Brandish. Which, has a rockin' OST, with many different console versions. But each song was basically the same.

Then today, when realizing Brandish is relevant in many different threads, that the Super Famicom and Super NES versions did have a completely different opening track by region, courtesy of KOEI doing the ports. Very strange, but I think I love the US version most. Both are good, of course. Decide for yourself!

This game is so dope. Closest thing to Dark souls on Super Famicom IMHO. The Berserk inspiration is clear, to me.

I really wish I could play brandish! I am incapable of parsing the directional stuff. every turn disorients me completely. it's stupid as heck.

Here's another pair of alternate opening themes. I have deep rooted nostalgia for the US one, so it goes to show I think that one feels like it belongs. But the JP opener is also…. amazing

Here is an interesting one. The Dynastic Hero US has a nice intro song here:

The JP demo version is same song but sang by probably a Japanese singer.

And here is JP retail version with completely different song that is also nice.

There are games where they omitted vocal tracks for US versions such as Cosmic Fantasy 2 intro song. The most tragic case is Super Air Zonk continue screen song.

Here is JP version:

Goemon‘s Great Adventure had it’s epic JP opening scrapped. Strange since the prior N64 Goemon localization left the opening intact. It's still one of my favorite N64 games.

@KennyL#21989 the jp retail version of that dynastic hero intro is one of my favorite pce vocal songs!

@treefroggy#21977

That megaman 8 intro slaps dude. Back in the days of actually downloading videos to your computer, I had all the psx megaman/Rockman intros saved in a folder and I'd watch them all the time. The megaman 8 intro and Rockman 5 intro were my favorites.

@kory#21674 The history of Jackson‘s involvement in Sonic 3 is well known, but I strongly suspect that there may be a technical reason to this. All of those tracks listed also have samples in them that the Genesis outputs and mixes in. Knowing how PC Audio architecture was at that time was totally different and most Windows/DOS PCs didn’t have the same capabilities to play samples, I wonder if that's why these tracks were changed.

@exodus#22024 Yes! PCE CD hits that late 80s early 90s jpop/gamepop sweet spot that's just unmatched. MEGA CD JP songs are also nice but feel bit too new haha.

@exodus#21895 Have you tried the PSP remake? I’m not sure how well it holds up, but at least the 3D remake doesn’t have the bewildering insta-turn of the original.
