A while ago, I researched extensively a topic that randomly came to mind: where does the "blue penguin with a yellow beak" character design trope comes from, and what was the first video game to feature such a character?
(Very) long story short, I am now pretty sure the first commercial Japanese video game to feature a blue penguin with a yellow beak is Gakken’s LCD game [**Nankyoku Monogatari**](http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/kiden/densigame10/nankyoku_monogatari.htm), an official adaptation of the (at the time) wildly popular Japanese feature film known in most Western countries under the title **Antartica** (1983). The game is fortunately a tad less depressing and its package has the two protagonists of the movie on its cover.

I love when they make games for ‘serious’ tv shows or movies, and the box art give you no concept of what the actual game is like. Like, the people buying these games will eventually realize the gameplay consists of shaking the wiimote in order to seduce 2.5D McDreamy.

It's also sad that the cancelled Mean Girls DS game, [which was supposed to release in 2010 ](https://lostmediawiki.com/Mean_Girls_(lost_build_of_cancelled_Nintendo_DS_game_based_on_teen_comedy_film;_2009-2010)#Official_Response_from_Publisher) (6 years after the movie) leaves off Lindsay Lohan. They even made the MC model look different from her, presumably it's because of the troubles in her personal life at the time. Justice for Lindsay!
