Will 2025 be the year you finally get that 4k display? Or are you a 640x240 die hard?
Now that we have that obvious joke out of the way… Tell me about your video game related goals for 2025! Are you trying to play more modern releases? Less? Are you planning on focusing on a specific series or console library? Playing every game club game of 2025? How about playing one new game from every year you’ve been alive?
My resolution is to buy only one game in 2025. Can you guess the game!? I want to play the games I have already, and get less distracted by the shiny new thing. I have access to so many games that I can easily get distracted with what I have in my library already. I’m also going into a more financially limited living situation, so it’s kind of a necessity I cut back on some spending.
I’m hoping to write a little more about what I play.
I beat a lot of games, and typically just move on to the next one unceremoniously. I really want to get into the habit of at least jotting down some initial thoughts, as I know I would enjoy the experience of going back and reading what I had to say about a given game back what I was freshly off it. I currently will go on backlogged and give a game a x/5 rating, but even just a brief paragraph on what I just spent 20 hours on shouldn’t be too big of an ask.
i’m currently working on moving some of my backloggd comments (like 36 total over 4 years… wish I had made this a habit earlier) over to a neocities page, hoping that will motivate me to get more in the habit of journaling this stuff.
@Funbil Yeah, this will be the main challenge for me. The new Monster Hunter will be the first test, because many of my friends will be playing that one.
@palo Post your thoughts on the forum if you want to, I’d love to read your thoughts. EDIT: and link your website!
My first resolution is to keep pecking at a bunch of games that I have unfinished business in. I started a list of about 15 games that I put down for one reason or another from the last 5 years where I have a save file that I want to pick up in media res. I might be posting a poll later for where to start.
Maybe when Mai Shiranui comes to Street Fighter 6, I’ll check that out and check out the SF6 discord group. I’m not good at street fighter but I’m ok at KoF so maybe that will translate? Mostly I want to get into GAROU CITY OF WOLVES when that comes out, though I’m sure Blue Mary will be paid DLC a year late after I have lost interest.
I also want to check out more Mistwalker games because it’s a blind spot for me. In particular it could be fun to play The Last Story because I never really messed around much with a Wii or any Wii games (aside from drunken Mario Kart or Smash Bros at parties in college), so it could be a fun project to figure out how to emulate that.
ding ding ding! We have a winner. You nailed it. Not only have I wishlisted Demon School, but I am going to buy it and play it right away. I might even buy a copy for my friend!
I have four and i’ll write them in order from more realistic to less realisitc.
Ask for help to better my competitive tetris techniches. I am cureently quite fast when playing tetris (tetr.io) but i got to where i am just by bruteforcing it and never reading up on strategies or asking people for tips. Im kinda not very social online but I wanna talk to people to see how can improve.
This one is more of a generic new year resolution: Start consistently playing DDR with the custom pad I built last year. So this basically is execercising lol. I have played on streaks for up to 2 weeks but im very bad at having a schedule and being consistent. Basically I want to beat my laziness and play something I really enjoy while benefiting from the good stuff exercising does to you.
Write the bulk of a long write up I haven’t even formally started (i have a ton of notes ready though) about the history of Artdink. Probably not gonna finish this one in 2025 though. Putting this on the less realisitic cause this involves either paying for some translations or improving my japanese reading a ton.
I also want to get in the habit of writing about games more. I have a reading list about failure in games, so over the next few months I want to slowly read through that. Then I plan to return to some games that have interesting fail states (I’ve mentioned Pendragon before; I’m thinking in the vein of games like Pentiment where some degree of failing is inevitable).
Other than that, I’m keeping it loose this year. I’ll be busy through at least May, so I have a short list of games I might play with no immediate expectations beyond what I’ve planned (Demonschool, the Lunar Remaster, a Like a Dragon).
This year (2024) I made it a goal of playing through all the Metal Gear Solid games after finishing Death Stranding on literal new years day. I’ve more or less kept that goal and have played through all mainline MGS games now! Except MGSV, that one is kinda long and I’m still chipping away at the post game.
Anyway I like the idea of have a series of older games I know I can chip away at when I finish something. This upcoming year I want to try and finish all Drakengard games. I love Nier but only have 2nd hand knowledge of the Drakengard games. And if this ends up ending too quickly I’ll pivot it into the “Year of Cavia” and just play more Cavia games.
Also mirroring others thoughts here that I’d like to start writing more on the games I finish or even play. Joining this forum earlier in the year has been really fun to read others thoughts and share my own.
my first resolution should be completed by the end of january, which is to build a rig for myself. i bought all the parts and i’m just waiting for them in the mail now.
the second will be another year of trying to get into community management professionally in a studio or publisher. i have amassed a decent amount of experience this year and i hope this will help me get better opportunities in 2025
I’m also in the camp of wanting to write more about the things I play / have played. If I had to pick just one specific thing, it would be to finally put together the long-fermenting essay on Final Fantasy XIII (which is as much about the past and future of the series as it is actually about FFXIII)
My goal for 2025 is the same goal as the last two years: finish 12 games. I’ve finished way more than that in previous years, but I try to allow for being busy, following my other interests, etc. etc.
I’m also resolving to break my two-year streak of playing a game every day because it’s started to weigh on me. It will be kept up for January (going to play Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 day by day) but after that, I will break it and set myself free.
Felt I doubled down on retro and familiar genre comfort this year. Just ordering pizza, taking a big cheesy slice, and exclaiming “now that’s a pizza” every time.
Going to try exploring some new things. Whether thats a big established thing I haven’t yet tried or some smaller stuff I haven’t yet heard of.
In 2024 I made a videogame-tangential resolution to get my priorities straight, and having more or less done that, my gaming resolution for 2025 is to play games way less than I do. I love fighting games and playing games with my friends once or twice a week, but going forward I’d like to save the rest for weekends.
