Hacks, Hardware & Emulation, Oh My

@treefroggy
I use a sonicator at work to clean/unclog instrument parts. Haven’t seen people use it for game stuff but it makes sense. It’s an effective way to thoroughly clean little stuff. You won’t expose yourself to any chemicals besides whatever cleaning solution you’re using.

I want a sonicator. I ended up getting a homogenizer and went through my equipment budget for the year.

Also I wonder if you can use something like mineral oil in a sonicator so you don’t subject your metals to corrosive materials.

Oh man imma send you some stuff

@Chekhonte that reminds me of when I worked in a bike co op and we submerged stuff inna bio diesel bath

Early prototype of a Pi based gaming kiosk we are building at work for events. It’s been a good experiment for me to work with a Pi emulation environment (Batocera) and really dig into the code.

Anyone here knowledgeable with XBSX2 the PCSX2 offshoot for Xbox Series S/X? I installed it to my Series X in dev mode, in hopes of playing my old PS2 discs through the Series X. A bit of wording on the main menu would seem to indicate that discs can be played, but I can’t find a hint of anything in the XBSX2 menus about discs. Can’t find anything through searching that confirms or denies discs can be read.

I have not done this with my Xbox so take this with a grain of salt, but from digging around a little it doesn’t seem like you can play discs and have to make a back up. Otherwise best way is to just pop one in and try I suppose.

Yeah, I think you’re right. It was just this bit of wording that made me optimistic that I could:

Also I’m pretty sure base PCSX2 reads discs, so I was holding some hope.

This was a bit of a letdown, cause I’ve got good solutions for playing most everything but PS2. When I want to play PS2 I have to drag out an old 32" LCD I have that has component hook ups, but I have nowhere good to place it so it just makes a big clutter.

Amazing how this guy is making pretty cool stuff but has the worst sense of branding and graphic design lol

Other than the mister clone his company is doing an fpga handheld, a linux handheld, and this switch lite OLED mod and supposedly a video out mod.

They can’t all be Professor Abrasive I guess? (Or can they?? Just hire a designer, guys.)

I was thinking about this when the DE10-nano clone was officially unveiled, and just like it most of the aftermarket hardware I own coasts on callbacks to Sony’s or Sega’s old branding. Wherever they don’t it rarely looks any good. The MemCard Pro and PSIO with yellow along the sides, ok, those are components specifically for use with PSX so they’re trying to match the old branding. But like why are there Master System grids and serifs on Taki Udon’s USB hub and RAM boxes?

MiSTer Addons almost has a good logo, if only the angles of the peaks were consistent across his silkscreens.

I like the Designed in Idaho potatoes though.

Got me one of these retro handhelds. I chose the RGB30 because of the form factor, I especially like the nice 1:1 720p screen. I am aware it has some wonky battery issues, but I don’t think it’s going to be that big of a problem for me.

So far I really like it, and have already played through Super Mario Bros 2 and Sonic Pocket Adventure. These systems look really nice on the screen, such a great fit. I imagine Gameboy will also be a treat, but I’ll have to sort out a suitable library for it later. Will absolutely be putting some puzzle games on this thing.

I’ve ordered some new memory cards so I can Flash a different OS on it, one that will hopefully adress some issues with playing more intensive Saturn games.

A different OS probably won’t help the Saturn. They are usually just different front-ends that load the same cores via RetroArch, or a stand alone emulator. You can try different cores, but Saturn and N64 emulation are notorious for needing powerful CPUs that those Android handhelds can’t provide.

Best thing to do is use the lowest resolution to mitigate slow-down on the Saturn and N64, but it will never be a glitch free experience on those devices. Still, enjoy what works!

There was apparently an older version of Jelos that played games like Sega Rally perfectly, but the last version supported kind of broke it. So I was going to try out a fork of Jelos for the RGB30 to see if it works. I was going to switch over anyway just to be able to update it in the future.

Flashed a new OS on the thing, and now Saturn games run at full speed. Hecking~

I’m curious to know if anyone backed this new montior and emulation device by Checkmate as it’s almost out in the wild and looks very good

If you did, care to share an honest review as I’m very tempted but would to know more.

A bit too expensive for me, but they look really nice and I think it’s a great project. This is the stuff we need more of.

With how bendable OLEDs are I wonder if anyone’s working on a parabolic OLED screen, or if that would even be possible, to mimic the shape of a tube screen.

Well, to match the motion clarity of a CRT with a curved screen it would probably have to be like this 480hz Sony OLED coming out.

Hello, hopefully an easy question for you all. My GameCube internal battery has died, and apparently I need to learn how to solder to remedy the issue. I rather learn this skill than pay someone else to do it, since it sounds sort of simple. Does anyone have a recommendation on like a starter kit for soldering?
