Huge news for heavy music! The legendary MELT BANANA are releasing a new studio album in August!
new sabbat is insane good imo
I’ll have to check that out - I actually forgot they were still around!
this record has some good haunted carnival riffs i feel like only they could pull off as well
this is really good but also posting here to keep track of since the bandcamp app is fucking dogshit
Growing up in a fundamentalist doomsday cult I tried to grab onto things that seemed the furthest away from that garbage. I spent the early and mid 90’s going to death metal shows in midwestern basements. I was always delighted that those people were actually nice. I wish I had recorded those shows.
I grew up without religion but was also pleased to see how nice these people all were. But then as I got older I started to dissect it a bit more and realized they were nice to me because I looked like them, and rather a lot of these fellows were not so nice if you didn’t. One of the most disappointing aspects of my late teens was realizing how ignorant some of these bands are. But that’s just people I guess! I assumed they were like me and then I talked to them a bit more and went “Oops!”
to be fair this is just about any music scene
Hung out with an old buddy and am reminiscing on some of the shit we used to listen to
If Dillinger Escape Plan isn’t hard enough for you, you’ll like Psyopus
Bleak stoner doom that is not that good is probably pretty easy to find given how easy it is to play those riffs, and Black Pyramid aren’t Electric Wizard by any means, but Black Pyramid is kinda like if someone took The Sword and slowed it the fuuuuuck down dude
Throwback bands are an inherently corny concept, and speed and hair metal are inherently corny genres, but something about how Striker committed to the fuckin bit really works for me. I also remember them kicking ass live
three raw bm bands i’ve been very into lately. atmospheric and melodic, but also some killer riffs which is important for me.
they each have a similar-ish vibe and production, and i’ve seen some unfounded rumors that they may even be projects by the same person? that would be very weird if so, considering the identity of each band. however, as far as i can tell there’s nothing backing up that statement, so i’ll keep jamming.
i’m also continuing my obsession with abysmal specter of of grime stone records. this dude has so many projects and each of them range from good to great. he’s very prolific and seems like a cool dude in this interviews–he writes as he records, saying his songs are more similar to impressions than they are actual songs. he also says he doesn’t like going to shows or playing live, which makes me feel better about the same.
he also has a healthy sense of humor and DIY ethos. i find his approach refreshing in the metal scene, especially the little things like putting “say no to nsbm” on his website. i also find his approach to art and the breadth of his output personally inspiring.
what i’m saying is he’s a very ic-friendly metal musician. here is a song or two i like form each of his projects:
I appreciate this, as I enjoy some heavy music but do not enjoy navigating the minefield of “oh that sounds cool, wonder if nazis made it” whenever coming across something new
a fraught position i also find myself in
Arguably, the only good metal is made by people who have a healthy sense of humour, perhaps specifically about metal. Surely there are also exceptions that prove the rule but, like, even thinking of the kinda stanky dudes I used to play shows with in the punk and metal scene here, the best bands tended to be made up of guys who weren’t afraid to write a song about a dumb subject and just knew how to hang in general.
I’ve struggled to get into much metal, but I like a few bands.
Been listening to this Liturgy album this morning. I love it.
liturgy is great. i love her borderline schizo genius. i also played a show with them a long, long time ago circa 2011!
Wow, that’s really cool. What’s your band?
broke up ages ago but i assure you my mystique and cool is much better preserved if i don’t tell you
I have only just this morning learned that there is a new Swallow The Sun album due out in October this year.
