Hell

Post your favorite video game depictions of hell.

I'll start with Genpei Toumaden:

The first thing you see in this game is the words "地獄", your character materializes, then an assortment of nightmarish creatures immediately start knocking you around and send you flying across the screen.

Edit: As Chaz reminded me, we also have a thread specifically devoted to friend of the forum, [Satan](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/839-show-me-satans)!

first thing to come to mind:

but nothing can beat the hell i imagined while listening to my friend talk about doom, thinking it was a side-scroller.

With Chrono Cross being re-released next week and many people playing it for the first time, I'm going to use spoiler tags:

The temporal vortex is one of the best settings in gaming. It's like a DMT trip where Serge experiences ego death and a cosmic horror inside a disorienting expressionist art painting. Being here for the first time felt every bit as shocking and magical as the endings of Earthbound or Nier Automata for me.

Jedah’s stage in Vampire Savior.
This is a cousin thread to [the *show me Satans* thread!](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/839-show-me-satans/26)

I don‘t think it’s ever called hell in-game, but the first thing to come to mind was Space Funeral.

This game also taught me that if you’re American you don’t go to hell - you go to ‘an island’.

not finding a lot of decent quality screens or footage but the hell sequence in The Darkness was memorable. You're playing a modern day nyc mafia game, then get killed and are transported to a jake and dinos chapman style war atrocity themed hell

It‘s not hell as such, but a level made of screaming faces can’t be all that far off, can it?

It’s not a very good game but PS Vita’s forgotten launch title Jigoku no Gundan alias Army Corps of Hell, directed by one of the planners of Pikmin 1 & 2, takes place in the redundant corridors of hell, facing famous hellish VIPs as Bosses, trying to regain the throne of hell. It stays very much on topic all the way through. The Vita’s launch was weird.

The game is mostly notable for its soundtrack. Which is fairly common for a low key Square-Enix release, but they rarely sound like this.

Army Corps of Hell also released for the console’s launch in the US two months later, where it had a weird, low budget, slightly embarrassing, wannabe-viral video [promotional campaign](https://youtube.com/user/armycorpsofhell) shot in Hell, Michigan. I am sure someone on Insert Credit will be into this.

Wow, aside from the apparently one single environment (wild) this looks pretty neat??

@“chazumaru”#p64708 Wow. I can't believe he just said “Hell Pikmin” & did it

I‘ve written about Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup more than a few times on this forum. It has a set of Hell-themed levels in the lower depths of the dungeon for later-game characters. It’s totally optional. There are a total of 27 runes to get in the game and you only need three to “win”. Anyone who is trying to “merely” win, generally won‘t set foot in it, but you know, you play a game long enough and you get curious. There are 4 branches of hell each with their own themes, monsters, and runes. Additionally, the stairs only go down, not up in hell, so once you enter a branch, the only way out is through. And Hell’s Mystical Force afflicts you with bad status effects, or miscasted spells the entire time.

I've only poked my head in a few times. I know more than once it lead to a preventable death. Once I cleared out the "Vestibule of Hell" and killed [Geryon](http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Geryon) and gotten his horn. If you blow the horn, it will summon a random demon for you, but some times, the demon is hostile and tries to murder you.

I'm trying to find a screenshot and failing. Honestly, it's probably OK that I don't as if you don't play the game, it looks like any other dungeon level, but maybe red. But even if you have read some of the wiki and you know what's on the other side of the portal, it's hard to describe how frightening it is seeing a monster that is **two-tiles** large and commanding a ton of demons throwing damnation at you.

@“Gaagaagiins”#p64765 nah, it’s fair enough, that’s how I got here.

@"billy "#p64779 how did you get sent to hell?? You have never sinned as far as I can tell

Even the haters gotta admit the depiction of Heck in Earthworm Jim was pretty good
