How the &^#$ did I not know that? - Gaming Edition

This is a normie one, but as a kid I played through every inch of pokemon crystal. Or at least I thought. Ends up there is an area across from the day care that you can surf to that I’ve never seen. It’s obvious that you could do it, but I just never thought to? How the heck did I not know that?

The King of Facade and his fiancé both age as well. That’s why I had to specify among the regular characters.

Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters, the 1992 Game Boy sequel to the NES game, was developed in Japan…and never released there until 3DS virtual console!? And apparently they got the English version, untranslated for them. What on earth? XD

The only other first-party Nintendo games that weren’t released in Japan until later that I can think of are Startropics (which was developed for Americans and never planned to release there) and Advance Wars Days of Ruin (DS 2008), which was only available in Japan in 2013 on 3DS through Club Nintendo. ƒtƒ@ƒ~ƒRƒ“ƒEƒH[ƒY‚c‚r Ž¸‚í‚ꂽŒõ
Not sure why it’s not liking the Japanese text here ^

Which means it’s 3DS-exclusive DSiware! I guess that can be tomorrow’s post :)

If you can think of any other first-party Nintendo games not released in Japan, let me know ^^

Super Punch-Out!! was an R&D3 game released for SNES in 1994, but wasn’t released for the Super Famicom until 1998 through the Nintendo Power flash RAM cartridge series.

While we’re at it, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! released for Famicom the month after NES, and the version with the convicted rapist removed, Punch-Out!! wasn’t available in Japan until it was playable in Animal Crossing.

However, the first version of the game was a limited gold Famicom cartridge that didn’t have Mike Tyson or Mr. Dream and ended at Super Macho Man. These were given as prizes at a Family Computer Golf: U.S. Course tournament.

Wow!! I had no idea about Super Punch-Out!! What a weird release schedule and methods this series had. I kinda love it, but I wonder if it made it annoying for fans?

I remember a few months ago I was working on documenting video game hardware in games and I was doing the Animal Crossing releases and I knew conceptually that Animal Crossing e+ was the American localization put back in Japanese but it didn’t hit me that that meant that there were NESs in that version of the game… I kept looking for pictures of a Famicom with Excitebike and Soccer carts and was annoyed none of the guidebooks seemed to have it XD

That also reminds me of another project I was working on - video games that could only be won through contests, never purchasable at a store
(If anyone wants to help me with that that would be awesome!! What I have so far is listed here Console video games that were only available through contests - Google Docs) which then led into me listing golden video game carts because apparently there’s a few! Golden video game cartridges - Google Docs
I really love when video games do fun things like use special plastic colours to stand out
Thanks again for sharing the info! I love to learn new things : D

Thank you for all the info you’ve shared!

I especially loved the Herpit-ology lesson.

It may sound funny, but the 3DS had exclusive DSiWare!

The best resource with information is the Internet Archive download page for them, not sure if it’s okay to link to that so I won’t, but you can archive . org search “3DS-Exclusive DSiWare” to find it yourself.

There’s only a small handful so I’ll summarize them:

Heart Energy Poochi (ハートエナジープーチ)
This was released as the DS game Wappy Dog in North America and Europe

But then when it came to Japan, it was a 3DS game that had just the toy Poochi in the box with a download code. When redeemed, it’s DSiWare! Based on this a few other examples in the list, it seems this was the easiest option for releasing existing DS software on 3DS.

They include the Nintendo Fan Network application here but looking at the wiki page Nintendo Fan Network - NintendoWiki it says it was available on DSis, but the Internet Archive page says “It is believed to have been available on DSi systems at some point, possibly pre-installed on specialized units, but no such version has been found as of this writing.” Not sure which one is right. It is a weird release, I’ll give you that! It started off as a DS Download Play app only available to people at the T-Mobile Park. You could order food from your DS! And also view stats about the game, if you’re into that. (I’m more interested in the novelty of ordering food from gaming consoles, personally)

Nintendoji (任天童子)
This was a Club Nintendo reward in Japan in 2013

from 任天童子とは?
So it looks like Nintendoji was probably originally going to be a DS cartridge so they just turned it into DSiWare and released it during the 3DS’s life as a bonus, cuz that’s easier than porting it to 3DS natively I guess

Zaidan Houjin Nihon Kanji Nouryoku Kentei Kyoukai Kounin: Kanken DS 3 Standard (財団法人日本漢字能力検定協会公認 漢検DS3 スタンダード)
I’m just going to copy the information provided on the Internet Archive page because I cannot find any information on this myself, only the original DS version
“This is a (presumably stripped-down) DSiWare version of the Nintendo DS application Zaidan Houjin Nihon Kanji Nouryoku Kentei Kyoukai Kounin: Kanken DS 3 Deluxe. It is an application designed to help Japanese school students prepare for the Kanji Kentei. It currently has no page on the 3DS eShop back-end server (samurai) and may never have been made available to the public.”

Nintendo DS Kyoushitsu (ニンテンドーDS教室)
This was a collaboration between Sharp and Nintendo which was a classroom setup where the teacher would be able to send custom materials to each student’s DSi for them to work on. These were special systems with the application preinstalled on them:

More info at 授業支援システム・ニンテンドーDS教室のシステム概要|シャープシステムプロダクト株式会社
and ニュースリリース : 2009年6月9日
The internet archive page notes “This one actually was available on DSi on the Nintendo DS Kyoushitsu unit, but it is included in this list because it is only available on the 3DS’s game distribution server (CDN) and not on the DSi’s CDN. However, this application also has no samurai server page and may also have never actually been downloadable on 3DS.”

WarioWare: Touched! DL
Originally a DS title in 2004, this was a My Nintendo reward in 2016. When you download it to your 3DS system, it’s DSiWare! (Which is also why I had to delete my copy, as DSi storage is very limited…:frowning:)

And finally, to wrap around to what I mentioned yesterday…
Famicom Wars DS: Ushinawareta Hikari DL (ファミコンウォーズDS 失われた光)
This was a Club Nintendo reward in 2013 in Japan, and was the first release of Advance Wars Days of Ruin in Japan.

from https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ds/943675-advance-wars-days-of-ruin/data
According to the internet archive page, “It was originally meant to be released on DS cartridges before being cancelled after multiple delays.” I’m glad they were finally able to play it in Japan, even if it took this workaround!

So there we go, every example of DSiWare that was only ever available on the Nintendo 3DS! Lots of really obscure software in here, I hope you enjoyed reading!

Oh no, that aged a lot worse than “Herpit”.

Does it count as aging poorly if the euphemisms existed back then, too?

I guess not?

I was blissfully unaware of that one, I guess.

This is just too fun a thread to make it a limited time event!

Meanwhile here’s something from me. You could play Master System games on the MegaDrive/Genesis as it was compatible with the games, because Sega’s 16 bit machine contained both the main processor and the sound chip of the master system. All the Power Base Converter/Mega Adaptor/Master System Converter did was align the pins between the cartridges and added a pause button.

Some games wouldn’t run to start with because of alignment with buttons between the controllers, but would work perfectly with a master system controller plugged in!

Now that’s backwards backwards compatibility!

lol I am more familiar with the GBA single pak link than I am this “DS download play” of which you speak

Yay! I’m so glad that my favourite thread here is now a permanent feature ^^ I was using my bigger posts due to the limited time so I’ll start sharing smaller facts at some point. I dunno if I’ll keep up the daily schedule either, we’ll see. Thanks again!

A collection of official pixel art Waluigis

So I was playing Mario Party-e the other day and was like “oh my goodness is that an OFFICIAL WALUIGI SPRITE??”
image

Because I didn’t know those were a thing! And so I looked into what games you can find him in pixel form, and it’s a lot more than I thought! Thank you so much to the fine folks at https://www.mariowiki.com/Gallery:Waluigi for listing all of them and I’ve linked the Spriter’s Resource sheet that I got them from if you want to see the rest of the sprites from that game

Also for clarity I’m excluding any sprite renders of 3D models or 2D artwork

His first pixel appearance is the Game Boy Color version of Mario Tennis (The N64 version was his first game)

Next up, he was in Game & Watch Gallery 4 on GBA. I really love the Game & Watch Gallery series because they remake old Game & Watch games using pixel art Mario characters and it’s so charming! Nintendo crossover stuff always makes me happy ^^

Mario Party-e (e-reader / GBA Peripheral) - as I was typing out a description of Mario Party-e I realized it would probably be better to make that its own post so look out for that!

Mario Tennis Power Tour (GBA)

Mario Kart DS (DS) - He is a 3D model in game but he’s got a few sprites!

and as a bonus here’s his carts :)

Mario Hoops 3-on-3 (DS)

Look at himmmm :D

Mario Party 8 (Wii) - Using a Bitsize Candy

Itadaki Street DS (DS) - The Wii game Fortune Street is actually part of a usually Japan-only series, Itadaki Street that goes back to the Famicom days!

And that’s it! That’s all the pixelated Waluigis I could find. I’m so happy this guy has gotten some awesome renditions over the years, even as recently as 2015! What a champ

and it was at this point that I realized that maybe the topic of this post, though it is one of my favourites I’ve done, does not quite fall under this thread. Welp! Hope you enjoyed it anyways

Waluigi has never looked better than in the gray overalls in that Game & Watch Gallery appearance. They should revive that look.

I hate waluigi and do not recognize him in my wario canon
however
his lack of 2D sprites is one of the primary reasons. and so this is the one waluigi post I will ever approve of.
Yeah I remember him being in mario tennis and game and watch gallery 4. Those are the closest he ever came to entering my headcanon. @Death_Strandicoot that look is too good for him. it’s like how he would look if he deserved to exist at all.

Waluigi is an angel, and you should be ashamed.
