How to display/browse handheld cartridge games

@“mindleftbody”#p116557 Dang. Do we if GB games will fit inside the little plastic shells?

@“robinhoodie”#p116584

Yeah. 40 games in plastic shells would fit in one, 5 in each little section.

I don't have a ton of handheld carts but what I do have I display in this glass case. Its somewhat unwieldy as it opens from the bottom with a very stiff latch that if opened too abruptly a bunch of games will shift or topple. Ill probably find a new way to display them eventually.

I‘m going to try the binder route. Does anyone have advice on what kind or brand of sleeves to buy? Baseball card seems to be the main thing but I’ve also heard about coin sleeves. I'm suspecting single side is preferable to double sided sleeves but not sure! Any advice is welcome

@“exodus”#p116745 When I fell back into Pokemon cards for a little bit, I looked up what the best kinda binders were for storing cards and these were highly recommended: https://www.amazon.com/Vault-Binder-Trading-Loading-Pokemon/dp/B071V91LGC/ref=sr_1_6?crid=3PI7UP6RYGTIO

Basically want one that doesn't have keyrings that jam up and ruin the sheets, use acid free pages so labels don't rot and stick to the plastic, have slots with side entrances to make it easier to slip things in and out of, and a zipper on the outside so cards or whatever inside is safe from sliding out.

@“Personasama”#p117068 ah, but I want one for cartridges and these won't hold many! And I was hoping for sheet advice too :3

@“exodus”#p117071 Oh oops, I thought they'd be big enough for a cart

@“exodus”#p116745 single sided trading card sheets work with GB/C/A, cheap ones are fine (any you can find at an office store or wherever, I got some at daiso here). Can put two gba carts in one pocket on top of each other without issue.

I recommend you don’t get a huge binder, but get a few modestly sized ones and sort however works for you. I’ve got one fatty one (4 inch rings?) and I’d prefer to be able to handle subsets at this point.

@“exodus”#3 Some example pictures:

I think this is a 4 inch binder with about 10 games thick (I’ve got gaps between alphabetical chunks to be able to add stuff in, so pages have variable open spaces, evens out ok)

Boktai can fit on top but other fatty cartridges are best stored separately.

Had to pull out gameboy games G-Z otherwise the binder couldn’t close past flat. Need another binder, will likely do one for GBA and one for GB/C.

Blank pages look like this:

Regarding acid-free or whatever, Idunno, these are just plastic film, not really making strong contact with labels and they’ve been fine for a decade ish. Top loading is fine. Other way to store is to fold the sheet into a Z and just stash wherever.

Pardon my late contribution to this thread. All this shelf business makes me feel a bit like an animal with a binder. My ultimate solution is some tapestry of these pages to hang, but that’s for some future world.

Oh, also, having extra pages is good for pulling out an ‘active set’ out n bout.

I started 3d printing storage for my loose carts years ago, but only recently got around to trying to solve the handheld problem. Here’s my first attempt:

On the plus side, they’re space efficient and I think they look decent in these big closet drawers. They’re not the easiest to browse, but it’s not too big a problem because my cart-only collection is pretty modest. Still, I’m considering:

  • 1. Adding alphabetical dividers every so often.
  • 2. Redesigning the holder so each cart has a little “flop” to make flipping through them easier.
  • 3. Redesigning the holder to be several shallow tubs so I can store and flip through the games like vinyl at a record shop.
  • Any other ideas?

@“MDS-02”#p117098 thanks for the detail, this helps a lot! It‘s true that the binder is kind of unsophisticated looking compared to shelves, but when you’ve got a lot it‘s tough to do that unless you’ve got a huge amount of space. I tried some tapestry solutions that didn‘t work, but I didn’t think about stitching some of these pages together… That might be something.

Coin sleeves would probably be too tight. A quarter in a cardboard protector fits snuggly in my sleeves. Also, don't just get any binder. You might like a D-ring more than another type.

@“bwood”#p117153 yeah D ring is basically necessary for anything greater than 4-5 pages worth.

As an update on this, I finally ordered some binders the day after I was researching laptops for my aunt, and now amazon (I know) is encouraging me to “keep shopping for college” lol

So I‘ve started the binder thing, but it doesn’t work for game gear! Heck. Any thoughts on that platform? Those carts are so big I might just have to stack them in a box…

I was Googling “thin reproduction boxes” and came across this:

(pretty much showing this because their stock example photo is BONK)

and this (same product, different website..):

    https://stoneagegamer.com/bitbox-game-gear-turbografx-16-game-case.html

    Description says:

    Game Gear
    TurboGrafx-16 huCard
    PCEngine huCard
    Master System huCard
Most Game Gear and TurboGrafx-16 / PCEngine manuals should fit in the inside cover area. We currently do not offer any straps or pockets for documentation.
    Compatible with these EverDrives:

Would require some work to look presentable, but I've seen people use cassette cases and printing custom inserts. Seems like a fun way to do it for most loose carts!

If you don't like them just sitting loose, I've seen you can make / people sell custom 3d printed inserts to hold games

I was worried Game Gear wouldn't fit, but this person seemed to do it?

perhaps if you or someone you know is a CNC machinist or whatever, I saw these today from an etsy seller who makes them custom to order.

Though something I thought of just now, that I would mention if you want to store this front-facing hanging on a wall in any fashion, in a normal home with windows, I‘d be concerned about causing yellowing by exposure to sunlight. I’m not usually one to be a bubble-boy about anything, except when it comes to yellowing vintage game stuff. Though the plexiglass or whatever plastic combined with natural diffusion of light in your house and some thoughtful placement of the frame would probably reduce any risk of yellowing…

@“treefroggy”#p128879 I’ve also always wondered about UV blocking glass options for things like this. I don’t even know if they exist but it seems like an obvious thing people would want in various clear cases.
