I guess it can't be helped: the anime thread.

I think they started off with a good idea, following another kids messy time growing up, but the misstep is shoving haruko in there.

Maybe the most recent ones are good idk haven’t looked into them much since the trailers came out.

I agree with you all but I’d like to pitch you all my sequel to Cowboy Bebop where the gang gets back together 20 years later but it’s a Seinfeldian sitcom where Spike is Jerry and Julia is Elaine and Edward is Newman.

What’s funny is it’s not the Atom stuff that it’s overexplaining, they’re handling that fine. It’s more like basic scriptwriting stuff. But yeah, better as manga in any case.

This is almost more distracting than it is entertaining. Dr. Eggman is here, Liquid Snake just joined the party.

I am not an avid anime watcher, but I briefly watched Dragon Ball and kinda fell off.

Decided to try One Piece as the game seemed widely recommended as a great musou title and thought I should get some idea of the story.

50 episodes in so far and absolutely loving it compared to DB. Just delightful, goofy characters with playful innocence and genuine heart.

So I guess I watch anime now.

Dandadan has been outstanding so far, Episode 4 has really nice animation for the action scenes. I really like the “red to blue” color story for the conclusion of the battle, really cool. Current with the manga on the SJ app, this is gonna be a ride.

2024 Ranma 1/2 has cool animation in the fight scenes! They’re really riding the halftone look hard sometimes, I think I like it. The drawings sometimes go into a simplified look that I don’t think hits for me, I don’t know if the ‘wacky thing happens and everybody falls sideways’ stuff really works anymore, but it’s nice to have a version of it ‘in print’. I’m wondering if they’re going to pull a swerve on us like the Netflix Scott Pilgrim and change it up, or if this is going to be a more compressed adaptation than the original anime.

Looks pretty neat, though I may be alone in wishing that they stopped using so much CGI in anime. I know why they don’t completely hand draw anymore, but I sure do miss that look.

I feel you but I’m gonna be pedantic and say bebop had cg even though it’s literally your username.

So I guess watanabe was always going to.

Ah, the anime thread.

I wasn’t even sure this was real/true when I first saw it.

It did but it was more of an accent, I’d say, whereas most anime now is, like, at least 50% CGI.

It really is a problem of economics. The cost of making a season of anime completely handdrawn is just astronomical. The reason so much of it was produced had to do with just not paying people and forcing them to work crazy hours.

…but I did like it more…

I for one am excited about the Catholic/Anime crossover that was always destined to happen.

Yeah it’s a real bummer in the outsourcing because they’re kind of lazy in the shading when it could look legitimately good.

I thought that was Xenogears.

It’s going to be so sick.

My only real reservation is how much they are playing up the Chad Stahelski involvement. I’m not sure I believe a live action stunt guy is that much better of a fight choreographer than decades long anime professionals, given those guys kinda admittedly pull a lot from anime.

Kind of ouroborous esque.

I just started reading Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure from the beginning. The drawings are WILD.

Let’s be honest: anime loves Catholic shit! I’d be curious why, but I imagine it’s sort of the inverse of westerner’s obsession with Buddhist thought and iconography.

But it is very funny that the papacy–the bad guy in a million anime and JRPGs!–has an anime mascot.

My guess as to why would be Japan’s first contact with Christianity (and the western world at large) was Portuguese jesuits, and then there’s the whole hidden Christians thing which has lots of surrounding legends like them practicing in hidden caves or hoarding treasure or whatever else. There’s just a huge amount of history there!

Ah, this is also a good potential explanation!

I mean, the opulence, the extravagance, the flash and pizazz–it really has the aesthetics of operatics down.
