INSERT CREDIT TIME ATTACK! Now Playing: F1 Challenge šŸŽļø

Hereā€™s an ugly 2:11.451 run, with a thing turned on to show my inputs. Iā€™ve changed the controls to have accel/brake on R2/L2, and shift on X/square.

I can see how I could get in the high 10.xxxā€™s, but a 09.xxx feels a long way off presently. Thatā€™s fast.

Randomly got a 2:09.681 on my third try last night then couldnā€™t get close. Wasnā€™t recording it, this is a 2:11.0 but it shows the 2:09.681 ghost and where that time was made up. Linking up the second half of the track is tricky (way less restart attempts). The 2:09 felt slower than this attempt, slow is fast. I think a 2:08.xxx is definitely possible. A 2:07.xxx might be in the realm of possibility if you clip every single apex, nail every single shift, minimize all tire squeal.

I need to clean out my hard drive so I can record in larger than 5-10 min chunks. Itā€™s been fun getting back into time trials, GT7 weeklies are fun but dragging the wheel out of the closet is a barrier. Wish I had seen the time trial thread sooner, R4 was one of my favs last year.

Driving notes if this helps:

-Shift at 7.75k-8k rpm, limit the limiter

-5th gear only comes into play twice, otherwise itā€™s all 3rd and 4th

-minimize turn inputs/tire squeal on the ā€œstraightsā€ to maintain momentum.

-You can get pretty close to the walls in the apex. I find if Iā€™m outside the white line Iā€™m usually too wide. If you bonk with your sidebody you donā€™t lose too much time so donā€™t be afraid to be aggressive.

My corner by corner thoughts (apologies for wordiness or lack of clear writing; time call outs for the 2:11 vid to help):

-Get up to 4th and into the right lane after the start, smooth into the center of the lane. Begin cornering at the crosswalk as smoothly as possible (should be around 188kmph), try and stay above 180kmph through the curve.

-Straighten and brake hard where the road bends out to the right (0:12), down to 3rd gear. Brake till the apex, full lock left and power to turn.

-Straighten under full power. Once the rear bumper lines up with that corner of the wall, full lock right and full power (0:16). Should clip the apex (within the white lines, thereā€™s a lot of room on the right you can go to the leaves), straighten and upshift to 4th riding as close to the wall on the left as possible.

-Left lane, when the last white barrier ad begins to disappear in your peripheral vision slam the brakes (0:23), downshift to 3rd, and crank the wheel right. Glide through the apex, light power/brake as needed to maintain as straight a line as possible through the 3 switchbacks. Power on, crank right to the yellow line.

-Middle of the road, when the car is aligned with the white signs on the right, brake and full lock left (0:29). I try and apex late to have a straight line through the left hairpin, ending up in the left lane of the road, and straight through the next 2 bends before the hairpin right.

-Full power staying in 3rd gear, brake for the hairpin when you are aligned with the left apex where the hairpin opens up (0:35). Glide and power through the apex swinging into the right lane.

-Aim for the chain link barrier, brake and turn around the arrow in the left lane. Late apex and carry speed through the first small ā€œstraightā€.

-Brake in 4th gear when the arrow pops up and the road bends right (0:46)

-Carry speed through the left apex in 4th, brake at the Mitsubishi sign, down to 3rd and turn into the hairpin. Thereā€™s a lot of room left so open the steering and straighten out as much as possible.

-First long ā€œstraightā€. Limit inputs, max out 4th gear without hitting the limiter.

-(1:02) flat out in 5th gear, get close to the wall on the left, turn right at the next apex (stay flat out) and begin braking once youā€™ve cleared the corner (1:04)

-brake as straight/smooth as possible. down to 3rd. off the brakes and glide/power through the right apex aiming for the left bend after (minimize corrections as much as possible)

-Up to 4th at the left bend, stay close to the wall on the right. Brake near the Auto Modellista billboard down to 3rd. The downhill throws off the braking point, I still struggle a ton with this. (1:11)

-4th gear and thread the curves as straight and tight as you can.

-Get into the left lane, hug the yellow line. Been making this corner on feel, basically when the car straightens out and the tree on the right disappears (1:20).

-Middle of the road/to the left. Stay tight and power out into the straight.

-Toughest corner on the track for me. The downhill really messes with the braking point plus all the shadow throws me off. Brake earlier than you think to hit the apex and exit nicely (not shown here, horrible); probably best to start braking where the wall gets tallest (1:32) the ghost brakes earlier, stays tighter, exits better, takes the lead here on out.

-Up to 4th by the ENKEI sign, i find getting close to the concrete barrier on the right then gliding into the curve best for keeping momentum up on the longest straight on the course.

-Max out 4th then up to 5th. Should be touching 200kmph by the braking point. Brake middle of the last shadows as close to the left as you can (1:50)

-the slight downhill here makes it a bit tricky but can be done on feel. 3rd gear, can exit wide and stay tight for the left hairpin

-Short straight, I think you can stay in 3rd and let the limiter bounce a bit vs shifting up then immediately downshifting. Brake and turn at the Mitsubishi sign from the middle of the road.

-Same deal as the last switchback pair, seems the ideal line stays tight to the left before and through the last of the switchbacks.

-Up to 4th before the final turn. I brake and turn on feel but near the ā€œtwisty road ahead signā€ (2:08). The ghost line really Vā€™d it out, was able to graze the inside of the corner straight lining it through the finish there.

Hope that helps, if anyone has other approaches please share, I think the times can go way better than 2:09.

Improved to a 2:10.786, with an embarrassing number of wall bangs ā€“ I thought about abandoning this run several times, but figured Iā€™d keep going for the practiceā€¦ glad I did, I guess.

The messiness of this run means I still have a fair bit of time up my sleeve. I dunno about a low 09.xxx, let alone an 08.xxx or 07.xxx though!

Nice run! Haha, May be a bit optimistic on breaking 2:08.xxx or better but the 2:09.6 time I did was similar to how yours felt, kept thwacking walls and just ran it out for practice but got the surprise at the end.

Hit the 10s woo. Still a ways off but Iā€™m feeling more confident controlling the car

Okay first of all thanks @rejj and @mack41 for the tips.

it was the perfect amount of ā€œdumbed down for meā€ i even had to google what an apex is in this context. also didnā€™t know what rpm was lol

thanks to all the notes I managed to get a 2ā€™14

also I just started to let go of the accelarator when braking instead of pressing both at the same time and realized I shouldā€™ve been doing that the whole time

havenā€™t gotten to implement all of mackā€™s tips but gonna keep going through the weekend and see if I can sneak into the podium

Thanks to all who participated, and congrats to the podium as we wrap up this latest time attack! It was another tight race, but Mack set the pace throughout and came out on top with a blazing 2ā€™09.

@mack41 - 2ā€™09.681
@rejj - 2ā€™10.786
@seasons - 2ā€™10.938

See yā€™all back here on 3/17 for round 5 with a game of mackā€™s choosing. In the meantime, hop on over to peep the latest Score Attack, if such a thing strikes your fancy.

This was a real fun round ā€“ Iā€™d never played this game before!
I reckon Iā€™ll load up the main campaign mode and give it a try in between crashing a bicycle.

Thinking F1 Challenge on Saturn could be a fun one to do next, but I know Saturn emulation can be a bit iffy (have yet to get it working on my SISTER Pi) so alternate would be F1 97 on PSX, Suzuka, Alesi in the Benetton Renault. Throwing a poll in to gauge the trickiness of the Saturn for people.

  • F1 Challenge - Saturn
  • F1 97 PSX

first of all thank you for using the correct nomenclature, second, is it really that much more trouble to get saturn emulation going? from my experience it is about the same as psx if maybe a bit more demanding like cpu power wise.

curious on what issues are you having with saturn your SiSTer

The bios Iā€™m using may need replacing. I get a ā€œno discā€ screen whenever I try something. I think a few hours with a tutorial will cure it.

Hey guys, getting an emulation box hopefully this week. Excited to participate! Have you all raced Sazuka, yet? I have been known to read.

Got the Saturn working! F1 Challenge - Schumacherā€™s Benetton - Suzuka!! Good luck everyone!!!

Achieved a 1:31.4 with lots of wall hits in the trial lap. Very interesting adaptation of Suzuka.

Is it breaking the spirit of the challenge to rebind the controls to to something comfortable? Three control schemes and none have the acceleration on a trigger.

Not at all! Manual/automatic are up to your choice too

Ran a dozen laps or so. Strange downforce but not sure if old game or because 90s cars. Fun so far, turns out I donā€™t need vr and a wheel racing is racing! Hairpin gives me the most trouble but stay right and use the middle of the first red and white thing I should know the name of as a braking point. Also should this be an orange thread? Thatā€™s where I first looked when I was trying to find here again.
