Is Shenmue the Seinfeld of Video Games?

i've never played shenmue or watched seinfeld, so if someone shows me proof of someone in shenmue saying “jerry” i will change my vote.

I think Seinfeld was appealing to those age 8 to 80 when it was live. Part of the appeal! But I can see why new generations might not like it now. I was cringing pretty hard at it last time I watched even tho I love it.

I think Boredom and Mundanity often get intermingled too much. What we often call the mundane is not necessarily boring but maybe more like doesn't provoke or require any action? This isn't very succinct, but I think there's something here.

I would say Shenmue's verb is “stop and smell the roses” and all about taking time to enjoy the mundane. I remember being floored the first time seeing Shenmue at my friends house 2002ish. the meticulous detail brought me to the conclusion “video games are real life now.” and the dreamcast is a beast.

There are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happen. when Shenmue debuted it felt like video games leveled up. Shenmue 2 & 3 failed to have the same impact and as a result has turned into a meme but the real ones remember Shenmue1 shifted the world.

A dark realization: between the AI-generated Seinfeld and Yu Suzuki getting involved with NFTs, there is at least one (somewhat strained) connection between Seinfeld and Shenmue.

I thought that AI Seinfeld was funny for a few minutes and then it started to get disturbing.

is the guy from incredible crisis the nearest thing to george costanza in video games?

@“rootfifthoctave”#p103201 unfortunately no

@“whatsarobot”#p102772 I played it for the first time on the PS4 around when 3 came out and thought it was incredible. Granted, I'd wanted to play it for 20 years at that point and am generous to a fault towards anything SEGA of that vintage, so I went in wanting and expecting to love it and I did.

It's a weird one now though. When it came out it was hailed as this huge ambitious breakthrough and when I played it, I appreciated it for being quaint, slow and meditative. I guess it always was a slow and odd game, but that sure ain't how I remember The Discourse when it first released.

@“christoffing”#p103355 glad to hear you came to it late and had a good time. i'd say quaint, slow and meditative are exactly the correct words to describe the experience i had with it too, 20+ years ago!

I think I‘d like Shenmue so I’ve tried emulating it on my computer a few times, and each time I end up with a different weird issue that I am too technologically illiterate to figure out. The first time, I think there was something wrong with my button mapping, so when the game started the only button I could press opened the chest of drawers in front of me, and I couldn't back out so I just cycled through the contents of the drawers for a while. Happened each time I rebooted. This most recent time, I went to start a new game and it said “Attempt to load game unsuccessful.”

Computers!!!!

all 3 Shenmue s have PC versions these days

This is more controversial than the Mario Republican thread.

@“yeso”#p103393 this did not even occur to me but yeah that's probably the way to go
