Who are any of us to say?
But if you make one, I will have to figure out if Pizza Tower is better than 1000xRESIST and I’m not sure I want to live with myself knowing the answer.

My stubborn stick in the mud position here is that they’re kinda just two more or less unrelated topics. Like, you have to qualify that statement more too by saying it’s also the best game(s) you played within the calendar year for the first time, since otherwise I could just say GOD HAND for GOTY every single year that I happen to play GOD HAND (and it’s never a bad time to play GOD HAND).
I think it was funny in like 2018 to picaresquely titter among each other by declaring an old ass game as GOTY, because you played it this year, out of a sense of superiority to the mainstream golden idolizing of The GOTY and the grinding commercialization of the industry. But I think we’re refined enough here to be able to have substantial conversations about specifically games that were released this year, especially because it’s not just a way to genuflect in worship to your favorite consumer product, it’s a way understand things like trends in the industry, economic dynamics like between small and large studies, the state of certain development studios, or a sense of progression of the medium overall.
At the very least that’s a conversation that is maybe best had on a cozy winter’s holiday or even new year’s eve, as in closer to the end of the year, once you really don’t even have time to play any more games until the end of the year. It’s only mostly appropriate to talk about GOTY now because most major releases are already out.
that’s what i thought too. just testing you…
Should someone create a separate thread where disparate gamers can share their ideas for more different threads for deliberation of 2024 games?
Take it from me, you can post anything you want on here
Please create a ‘Best Family Game 2024’ thread.
Flawless execution of #WasteHisTime
Sorry. I didn’t mean to derail this - I just had some downtime today and hadn’t seen the non-time sensitive thread up. Thought I’d do some reflecting in here.
2024 GOTY FR
1: Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble
2: LoZ: Banana Rumble
I’ve booted up Unicorn Overload once every month hoping that I missed news on a New game+ update. So that has to be in my nominations by default. Still slurping on that SMTV:V but I’m not sure if I should let that count.
I still haven’t played 1000xResist or Sorry we’re closed, but know in my jellies those are my in the top 4 for me.
Oh Rise of the Ronin was this year too right? I’m playing that right now. I like it a lot. I’m sure, much with like Horizon zero dawn, I’m gonna remember the game in high regards on the gameplay and absolutely forget vast majority of the story when recommending it to ppl lol. It’s a great game. It might be the Elden Ring to their Nioh.
Meaning I actually like the combat a lot and don’t feel bogged down by death and stamina management.
It’s no worries, I’m just a totalitarian stickler on this point, which is why I worded the first post so strongly lol
Cool year. Still playing through a lot of these. It’s a great batch of stuff to bounce between!
Common themes: Collections, Genre-Expansiveness, Ruminating on what this whole “video game” thing is.
sold.
I think late entry S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 should be in the discussion
Am I the only one who played The Thaumaturge?
I feel like I should but I just do not like the way it looks. I’m shallow I can’t help it
I’m interested in hearing more about Phoenix Springs. I played the whole thing and it didn’t do much for me, although I had the feeling that an hour-long Youtube video essay could convince me that the writing is secretly genius.
Also, after playing around ten hours of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 I’d say it’s borderline top ten for me. Current opinion is that it’s better than I Am Your Beast but not as good as Indika.
Phoenix Springs is also on my list too play before the year is up. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it too.
I thought Phoenix Springs was ok but it was imo I guess the term would be mannered and a bit thin, meaning that it’s written in a very opaque way that covers for, I thought, what would otherwise be a pretty standard sci fi-sentimental kind of story that’s become fairly common. Was a bit like pulling teeth to get much out of it again mostly because it’s being squirrelly rather than really mysterious.
But someone who appreciated it more would have more interesting things to say about it than me I’m sure
WAIT!!! I was lying I have played a game and I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet cause it’s honestly quite niche but as a true tetris freak I have to mention TETRACHROMA
It’s basically tetris meets reversi and it is a really inspired design tweak on tetris. it has plenty of modes and the vibes are a direct homage to CDi Tetris which is really great. I haven’t played it as much as I’d like though.
Therefore TETRACHROMA is GOTY
wow I played this on your recommendation and tbh it might be my goty too, I can’t believe someone legitimately improved on Tetris. the vibes are immaculate and it’s like seven bucks!
