Also, does anyone else remember Quiz Quiz from Nexon?

@“Kimimi”#p69883 Interesting! I enjoyed their video on the history of Falcom, and I‘ll admit this is a rare case where I posted something before screening it myself lol! I don’t know much about the subject! My bad!

@“hellomrkearns”#p69899 Quiz Quiz from Nexon?
I don't recall ever seeing this, but you already know, it is exactly what I like.... It uses the maplestory & ping pals sprites omg!
@“treefroggy”#p69902 @“Kimimi”#p69883 I think the video itself is actually pretty decent! They did their homework on the origins of Gravity, the context of the era in South Korea, Falcom’s ties to that market etc.
But it’s funny how the video makes a statement and draws a clear connection between Arcturus and TiTS yet stays very euphemistic and loose regarding how much Arcturus takes from Grandia.
@“treefroggy”#p69902 there for sure was an English version of it, but I'm having a hard time finding much on it.
Also played Ragnarok later and lots of Gunbound in university.
@“exodus”#p69894 * gasps *
@"treefroggy"#p69902 I'm sorry I really didn't mean to make you feel bad, I just take umbrage with retro content that uses the term "inspired by" when they usually mean "These two things are kinda similar and one of them came first".
@“Kimimi”#p69942 heck naw no feelings caught whatsoever. In fact I was gonna ask you to elaborate, but I watched the intro and can see that they kind of just name drop Xenogears when there could easily be no real connection, just similarity.
I forgot the phrase but there is one for coincidental adjacents that evolve the same way on a totally separate strand. Very common in gaming. To some people it seems miraculous but to me it makes sense. For example, just because SotC was the first game to successfully have the player do combat without giants by climbing onto them and stabbing the weak point, doesn’t mean people hadn’t been dreaming and trying to do exactly that since the 8bit generation.
@“treefroggy”#p69953 Oh I know the phrase you mean! It‘s… um… argh I’ve forgotten the term! I remember seeing it used in relation to basket weaving, something about completely disconnected peoples all coming up with the same pattern purely through similar use of the materials at hand and the object's purpose. I agree completely with your SotC example by the way.
This thread was just a ploy to have a maple story thread (jk)

@“Kimimi”#p69967 This whole medium and its many fandoms definitely suffers from cases of convergent evolution/multiple discovery getting simplified into “they did it first!” narratives. WRT the Bowl of Lentils video, he definitely could have made it more clear when he was just speculating about a direct/stylistic connection between Arcturus and Trails in the Sky. We know for certain (based on interviews with Falcom‘s Toshihiro Kondo) how much the earlier Gagharv games inspired what they made, but it’s possible for that to be the case and for Arcturus to have had some influence given some of Falcom played & localized it. (Leaving out any big mention of Grandia is pretty silly, though, given how much influence it had at the time.)
Game history has this first-past-the-post problem with reifying developers/companies who achieve something thought seemingly impossible or "genius" among the works of their peers. It isn't always about auteur-ism, either. Some commentators/historians value certain kinds of achievements above others, and the worst of them fail to explain why they do that to their audience (even better when they do shoddy research/citation). For my upcoming video essays, I'm really trying to keep these nuances in mind, and in the script, so that I present a less cocksure history of the game/topic I'm covering in case new evidence & analysis surfaces.

I went ahead and picked up a copy of korean PC neo turf masters on ebay for about 15 or so. I‘m curious if it was actually “reprogrammed” as it says on the box or if it’s emulated. We‘ll find out! I’ll rip it for archive.org whenever it gets here, too.
@“hellomrkearns”#p69899 oh WOW. i played SO much quiz quiz at one point in my life. the number of times i answered the same question about sam mendes or cameron crowe or something… crazy. thank you for reminding me of quiz quiz!
@“donrumata”#p71024 nice! Thank you for your sacrifice
@“hellomrkearns”#p71030
The box art is kinda sick and neo turf masters is prohibitively expensive so… not gonna lie, kinda just thought it was cool. Shipping estimate says a couple of months but whenever it gets here I'll post an update.

In biology there is a concept called "convergent evolution" where organisms that are not closely related develop similar adaptive traits completely separately. This is probably not the term you were trying to come up with bc it's specific to evolutionary biology, but it's still interesting.
@“mindleftbody”#p71068 no, that's the term I was trying to remember.
as promised, i have uploaded korean neo turf masters to archive.org
