Low at the Channing Murray Champaign. How I experience things does not allow for much loud, crowded spaces with flashing lights. It’s become worst since I’ve gotten older. I used to go to multiple shows a week as a youngin.
idk if you’d call it a concert but i saw theo parrish do a vinyl dj set last night. tbh im not much of a club person but this guy is a huge inspiration for me so I had to go see it. I liked the venue though. favorite part of the night was sitting down near the bar and the thumping music being kind of muffled and distant behind us. nice vibes in there and everyone was having a good time.
i’m much more into live music than dj-ing but this was really good, the stuff he was mixing together was wild. i imagine its difficult to find a way to make people dance to Giant Steps but he somehow did it. guy seemed to be having a ton of fun too, good for him!
a couple songs he played last night were so good that they’re still stuck in my head. i forgot to shazam them or whatever so I’ll leave it up to the universe to bring them back to me
wait did you meet him irl? that’s awesome
No I was just talking so some guy about music in a bar last night and it turns out he was like a Theo Parrish super fan. Thought it was a crazy coincidence so I wanted to share haha
hell yea good stuff random guy at bar
The joke/stereotype is true—growing up in Detroit I’d see dudes like Kyle Hall, Derrick May, Carl Craig etc play half filled small rooms but when they’d play Europe or japan they’d be treated like superstars. And rightfully so!
saw Kraftwerk in Memphis yesterday. was an outdoor venue, so they didn’t have their normal screen backdrop, but I got to be much closer than I would normally. went to the stage for the back half of their set; was sick seeing the light setup 20 ft away.
Had real laugh when I saw this merch at a Metallica show. Nothing more metal than FORTNITE.
We have tickets for the Stardew Valley orchestra at the end of August in Portland but with the way things are going between the US and Canada we might have to cancel :(. I really hope not. We liked Portland a lot when we first visited.
If it’s any consolation, the people of Portland decidedly did not vote for trump. But fuck America and go with your conscience.
How was Metallica? I always wanted to see them but never found the time or money
Totally, but it’s the border that’s the issue. Though I think I also remember during the George Floyd BLM protests that the city locked protesters downtown by lifting bridges?
Metallica was incredible. It was a bucket list show for me and they’re playing better now than 20+ years ago. I’d say I’d go again in a heartbeat but I can’t swing $400 per ticket very often lol. We saw them in Seattle which, in total, was an exhausting trip of less than 24 hours thanks to the Clipper who changed our sailing last minute so we had to wake up around 5 in the morning or something crazy after getting back to the hotel around midnight.
Saw back to back nights of ska last week between night 1 of Omnigone, Half Past Two, and Kill Lincoln (with surprise appearance of JER) and night 2 of Flying Racoon Suit, The Pietasters, and Mustard Plug. I met a lot of band members! The first couple of shows I went to I didn’t really know how I was supposed to move my body and was a little anxious because I’ve always gotten weird comments on my body language and movement as an autistic fellow, but I decided for these two shows to just let loose and not think about it and everyone was so nice and loved my energy and enthusiasm! Ska is really great and everyone in the scene is too!
feeling this. i live near the Mexico-US border and used to go to a ton of shows in San Diego, crossing the border has been just a normal thing my entire life, but lately the shitshow of it all is stopping me to go there as often as I did. Especially as a trans woman and how they are targeting trans people with visas (me) I’m worried they’ll randomly detain me for no reason. I’ve been trying to not cross alone because of that.
On a better note me and a friend/bandmate started organizing a lot more shows on this side of the border, and a lot more american bands are wanting to come play here, we are friends with some people in san diego that run a tape label/booking collective and they were funneling all the bands that played san diego and also wanted to play here to us and it got to the point we had to start our own booking collective thingie which is cool!
I don’t even want to compare the situation up here to yours! I’m a white cis guy wanting to travel between countries with historically very good relations. I assumed things here are just a glimpse of what it’s like normally during the Trump administration down south. I read some crazy shit circa 2016. I never imagined this could happen in Canada but I also thought a lot of things were too absurd to happen and yet here we are lol.
It sounds like you’re making the best of it though and that’s nice to see. The music scene is tough these days. I saw a band called Iron Kingdom open for Unleash The Archers’ album launch show and chatted with the singer of Iron Kingdom at their merch table after. He said they were flying to europe soon because it’s too expensive to tour the US. As in, it’s hardly even worth their time.
