Let's construct a modern Simple Series lineup

@chazumaru#2286 Fair argument, then let's get rid of Getting over it and add the completely amazing Tokyo Jungle instead.

What do we think about Mars: War Logs?

I believe the first game by Spiders, it always felt earnest to me. It was a little technically wonky, and the original voice acting was terrible, but they did their best and felt like somebody trying to be AA again.

@JoJoestar#2289 That one is a great candidate! It’s a huge regret of mine that a true port never came out on PS Vita. Maybe Sony should try Switch!

@baktegon#2291 I don’t think any game from Spiders applies precisely due to how awkwardly ambitious they are, but you did make me realize they have missed their destiny and absolutely should have become the Western Sandlot, rather than desperately trying to make games that should have had three times more staff and five times bigger budgets. Too bad(?) Focus Home Interactive found them before D3P !

i submit “Tiny & Big: Grandpa's Leftovers”, a game where you cut up ancient ruins with a big laser

and "AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! for the Awesome", a game where you fall for a long time

Adding some of these finally!

I do agree that foddy's stuff is too hyper-aware of what it's trying to do and how it wants to interact with the player. Mars: War Logs is too high quality/high budget maybe!? I think Simple Series games have to be sub-A level probably.

Tokyo Jungle definitely fits, though is it too old at this point? It's not too far outside the simple series era, but I'll put it in anyway. Fitness Boxing and Tiny and Big might fit... let's see.

If we extend things back to the PS3 era, I can include Kung Fu Rider.

but I guess a lot of the Move and Kinect catalog would fit in there... I think I'm gonna put these under a sub category since they don't quite fall under "modern."

I'd also consider those Puppet Combo games but they're almost trying too hard to evoke that era, which loses the idea of a modern simple series equivalent... which is why I can't put tokyo jungle or kung fu rider in, because they are a direct extension of that ethos and not a modern interpretation, if that makes sense.

Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae was a game that totally gave me Simple Series vibes. It's a 3D character action game that plays kind of like a Devil May Cry-lite where you play as a schoolgirl with a sword. The battle system is decently deep, but that was all they focused on. There is virtually no story, no enemy variety, and every level is just a flat plane. The graphic design even feels mid-2000s:

Also SSS06: Come On Baby probably feels like a simple series game because it was! Released as Simple 2000 Vol. 94: The Akachampion: Come On Baby.

Ah heck, I‘m a fool - sean even mentioned it was an existing simple series game! and I knew I recognized it! well, you’re absolutely right with Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae, so I'll just replace it.

ALSO: speed power gunbike rules

@exodus#2373 I'd like to make a case for Tokyo Jungle going officially in, because even if it seems to be an extension of that design philosophy it was actually a happy accident! And actually published by Sony officially for the console, which is insane and super funny to me.

https://www.polygon.com/2013/3/28/4157510/how-inexperience-and-failed-pitches-led-to-tokyo-jungle

Also, it was actually released on 2012, which was very late for the PS3 life cycle. Iron Brigade and Rock of Ages, which already made it into the list are from 2011 and 2012 respectivelly, but those being still available on Steam lead to the perception that Tokyo Jungle is "an older game", because it was released on an "old console".

Considering all this, would you all agree on setting up a fixed date to determine which games can qualify and which can't? Would 2010 for example sound good to all of you?

HMMMMMmmmmmmm since the simple series is a rather console-oriented thing (though I know a lot of our choices will be on PC), let‘s say the games have to be after 2013, when the PS4 comes out. Seems like a good date to think about. Though I can definitely see an argument for Tokyo Jungle… it just isn’t modern, and really feels like it‘s a couple generations back! I’m getting into the murky depths of indecision here, I'll try to structure some more actual rules around this in a bit!

Final Sword released on July 2, 2020, and looks like a great candidate for Simple Series. I am intrigued and tempted to buy it.

https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/final-sword-switch/

wow, I can‘t even find a trailer for this. it looks very “I went to the asset store,” but maybe it isn’t! do report back if you find anything out.

Here is the developers website: https://hupgames.wixsite.com/hupgames

Seems they are based out of Korea and Final Sword was originally a mobile game. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hupgames.finalsword&hl=en_US

They seem to be quite earnest.

Ah, they have a trailer in their site!

I think my issue is it looks too much like a student or amateur game, less like they tried their best in a limited budget, more like this was the best they could do period??

I think we're missing a driving game. The Simple series always had some weird driving. Games like X-treme Express or World Super Police.

Hmm, what‘s that game that is all about extremely precise physics and is nearly impossible as a result? I think that’d be good

Something funky with that link! Also, final sword showed up on Twitter recently

Update: it's no longer for sale :o
