let's discuss CRT TV ownership

If you’re giving it another try I recommend checking out “builds” for moves to buy and using the quick dodge (right stick up), improved the fun I was having for sure.

I should have checked guides for sure. It was in a time wheel there wasn’t a lot of info on the game widely available. I’ll do that for sure.

God looking at your photos makes me impatient for the day that I can photograph some CRTs with the clarity down to the subpixel.

Like I want to resolve the rbg parts and the space between them. It’ll happen. I just need to get my retainer to buy one.

I usually just point and shoot with an iPhone, then use live mode to pick a frame that aligns with the CRT. Alternatively you can use any camera app that lets you set exposure to 1/60th of a second.

I’m definitely going to need a medium format sale with a fixed 50mm portrait style lens to avoid barrel distortion from a close up lens probably shot in total darkness. I’m going to try it on that 36 inch shiny but I also found yesterday a 50 inch 720p plasma screen

I’m going to paint my auto walls a ceiling black and board the windows.

It sure was fun trying to use and then getting rid of all the old TV console furniture made for CRTs that were not big enough for a modern TV but weighed like 400 pounds. I do miss those consoles but its a lot easier for me to just pop mine on regular TV stand with no enclosure.

anyone have any tips for removing like some gunk (sticker residue???) from the glass in a CRT? the one I picked up the other day looks beautiful but there’s some small parts of the screen. So far I’ve tried to rub it off with alcohol/cotton and wd-40/cotton. Some came off but haven’t been able to fully remove it.

I can’t tell what I’m looking at but if wd40 didn’t get it off maybe acetone nail polish remover if you have some? Or mineral spirits if you’re an oil painter.

I have been using lighter fluid to get price sticker glue off many cartridges, and game cases.

Also a good solution. I used that to do acetone magazine transfers and it worked as good as acetone.

Yeah and it’s a 9” crt in the corner of the room sitting on a steel rack with a ps3 on top of the crt

Currently looking for these are thrift stores

this is glass. So use goo gone to remove residue, then you can use whatever you want to clean it. I use windex seldomly since it’s for glass. But usually just water to remove dust.

gonna try nail polish remover first since I have some around. If that doesn’t work then i’ll get the goo gone.

Yeah it’s just glass so whatever works. I’d be concerned about polishing too hard with/or too caustic chemicals and removing the surface layer. Polish remover / acetone is pretty intense chemical, you don’t wanna get that on your skin. The only times I work with acetone is doing construction or metalwork lol

Also this TV had surprisingly good geometry from the get go for a crt that I picked up from the curb

like it was like this before messing with service menus and that

Yes! late era CRT tvs were often fantastic, even less expensive ones. This janky Toshiba I got yesterday has excelent geometry and surprisingly vibrant colors. I’ve found suckers friends to help move my other 36 inch into the garage and the 36 inch, 2003 trinitron into my studio. I’m so psyched to see how it’s held up over the years.

Oh man, that barrel distortion from the screen curvature is so good. I love a curved screen. I’m not really this dogmatic about it but playing games from before the flat screen era should be played on a curved screen. Not really but it’s the real deal experience and I notice it when it’s missing.

i love all things B&O and would really love to find one of those with the motorized stand that’s perfect for holding video games inside!

I’ve been slowly amassing components to put together a first CRT setup, and unintentionally ended up purchasing a copy of Panzer Dragoon on the 30th anniversary of its JP release, so I figured it was a sign for me to post a photo of my current (extremely temporary) setup.

Next steps are to actually calibrate it and then hunt down something that can bear its mighty weight, because I love the shelves behind it but I’m pretty sure they can’t stand up to 100lbs of tube. Looking forward to digging into the thread!

How about the AV5?

Not only does it come with a motorized stand and has retractable speakers that automatically go in and out of the main body - When it turns on or off, the image gets faded like a theater curtain. Still not silly enough for you? How about the built in Philips CD-i, then?
What a glorious TV. I even built SNES controller Ports for mine.

Possibly a blasphemous post so please ban me if so.

But I haven’t been so happy with the CRT TVs from my uncle I got for free. It just didn’t look so great and I didn’t love the large size. I had a difficult time reading text in a lot of PS2 games. I suspect it’s the two specific TVs I have and not CRTs in general. I haven’t been able to find small CRTs locally, and I’m not much of a bargain hunter. So I began exploring alternate options.

A smaller LCD on my desk would be nice. I only have PS1 and PS2. At first I thought a Dell monitor could be nice. There are 4:3 ones out there that are pixel perfect for older consoles. Then I was doing some looking on Marketplace and found this for $20:

I’m quite happy with it! It has a headphone jack. S-video. And component. I only have an s-video cable for my PlayStations, so I’ll upgrade that too soon. But I think it looks quite nice on s-video PS1! I’m excited to hook up the PS2 soon too.

The TV doesn’t have any picture settings I can find. Need to mess around some more.

Part of me is sort of interested in Dreamcast, Genesis, SNES, etc. but I’m worried the games I want might be expensive. But need to research more.

First impressions of Operation LCD is positive! I want to sell/giveaway the honking big CRT I have and just have this little desk LCD, I think.

The TV I got has a little kickstand on the back and it’s pretty light. Kind of cute! I could imagine storing it away easily if need be.
