Let's play the same free MMO for a day - Brainstorming (Calling All MUDsperts)

Wouldn't it be fun to roll new characters or create accounts or whatever in the same MMO/persistent online game world, at roughly the same time as a bunch of the other people on here? Even just to make an event of it for a day–no pressure whatsoever to continue playing.

I think the game itself would be less important than the event of just being able to hang out with a bunch of forum members, but I think for it to be a fun thing to do, a game would need to meet at least the following criteria (the criteria subject to change):

  • -

Must be free to create an account and play the game. The presence of freemium elements are fine, so long as one does not require anything more than an email address to play

  • -

Must run well on a wide variety of PCs (so nothing new or graphically intensive)

  • -

In that same vein, ideally it's not something that depends on complicated install processes, large downloads, piracy, logging into private servers, etc., but perhaps if you have a really good idea for a game you can make a case for it

  • -

I think it'd be best if it was an MMORPG style persistent world kind of thing

  • -

Must have decent chat functionality: proximity based text chat and player to player private messaging for co-ordinating seems necessary, party/guild/channel based things we can freely throw together to communicate easily with all of us in real time would be ideal

  • -

We should all be able to freely choose a world/server/region, so that we can all start in the same physi-digital place

  • -

Same wrt to any sort of character or faction specific starting zone differences, but let's not rule out games that have different starting zones and worry about co-ordinating that later

  • -

Less a mandatory requirement and more a guideline, but stuff like this would probably be more fun if the game featured party/group/mass based co-operative stuff to do; _Monster Hunter_ or _Diablo_ style stuff with capacity limited gameplay content or game instances is defeating the purpose, breaking off into smaller groups to do instanced content wouldn't interrupt the party

  • What are some games that come to mind? Near ghost MMOs not yet damned to [Syzygy's eschatology thread](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/1173-the-death-of-worlds)? Some old MUD you played many years ago you still think about sometimes? Critically Acclaimed MMORPG FFXIV Meme?

EDIT: Looks like there is interest in doing this, so let's just say that in terms of choosing games, scheduling, and more minute details such as world/server/region/faction/starting zone will eventually be decided via a Google Poll facilitated democratish process.

    Proposed games:

  • - Sherwood Dungeon

FURTHER EDIT: I've taken some feedback I received in the thread to heart, and aside from revising some language choices here and there that may have suggested otherwise, I'd like to say very clearly and plainly that we would NOT be out to troll, cause a ruckus, nor a hullabaloo, nor a commotion, nor bedlam, nor pandemonium. I don't necessarily think anyone in here was thinking that was the sole or even secondary intended objective, but like, personally, I have outlets for being a stinker online (Twitter) that takes way less planning and coordination (just use Twitter in almost any way other than lurking). As such, I hope that if we're gonna do this, it will be with the intention to engage with the game and its existing community with intentions of good faith.

I love this idea. Not very knowledgeable on MMOs of any stripe, but I remember long ago accessing maidmarian.com and playing a couple browser-based… I don‘t even know what to call them, they weren’t RPGs or even massive but they were multiplayer and you could chat. It seems one of the actual RPGs among them, Sherwood Dungeon, lives on, and is available for Windows, Mac, and Android phones. The one my friends and I messed around in the most was Moon Base, which:

    :(

@“captain”#p82962 Sherwood Dungeon looks near ideal for this sort of thing!

I'll maintain a list of good candidates for games in the first post.

Also I think this would be very much the more massively multiplayer the merrier so invite your friends/family

it's not really an mmo, it costs money, and feels un-insert credit-y, but i feel like it could be fun to choose a random minecraft server, build some kind of structure/monument, and then never join again…

@“NoJoTo”#p82967 That rules, also, wow, does Minecraft really not have some kind of free to play version yet?

Also if we do end up doing Sherwood Dungeon, I guess we'd better make sure we bring @robinhoodie along

@“Gaagaagiins”#p82968 well, they did resurrect the ‘classic’ version of the game and made it playable in browsers, but the multiplayer seemed broken last time i checked, and it'd only be a private thing anyway.

I want so much for it be XIV but I don't have a machine that can run it, unless the Xbox port gets released before we embark.

If only there were other less graphically intensive critically acclaimed MMORPGs with expanded free trials on which you can play through the entirety of its base game and one or more of its award winning expansions up to a generous level cap for free with no restrictions on playtime

[“Let’s all invade the same free MMO for a day - Phase 1 - Brainstorming”,“Let’s invade the same free MMO for a day - Brainstorming (Calling All MUDsperts)”]

Changed the title specifically because I thought the word “MUDspert” couldn't just be something I just thought of and let melt away into the aether of the mind

    Could we play FFXI??

    @“connrrr”#p82976 Could we play FFXI??

I wouldn't know it well enough to know whether it meets the criteria I've set out to make it accessible to as many forum members as possible, but if it does, I will add it to the proposed candidates.

    Added a further criteria:

    >

@“Gaagaagiins”#p82961 Must have decent chat functionality: proximity based text chat and player to player private messaging for co-ordination purposes seems necessary, party/guild/channel based things we can freely throw together to communicate easily with all of us in real time would be ideal

Also @dicegame, this idea feels like it has Goblin Bunker energy…

FFXI is Windows only, which if that's an acceptable parameter opens us up to a lot more stuff, I would think

Sticking to browser or otherwise omni-platform stuff would probably be a bit too limiting, so yeah, I think Windows only is acceptable.

    Added:

Looks like it’s my time to chime in with something that meets all the criteria

My vote is for 🍁 MAPLESTORY 🍁
[AKA ADVENTURE ISLAND ONLINE AKA The Secret WONDER BOY mmorpg ](https://forums.insertcredit.com/d/441-adventure-island-online-maple-story-is-secretly-wonder-boy-in-monster-world)
    Meets every last criteria. 😆
