Update - apparently YSL (this is the way people who are cool in the way of Luxury Games refer to the mega-corporation Yves Saint Laurent) did this whole nonsense to a DDR* cabinet too.
The steam deck got me thinking about this thread and the original post: what is luxury handheld gaming? In terms of FPS and resolution the steam deck might be the new standard especially if you could drop a 1080p screen in there (as with the original post and adding an oled to a psp)… tldr luxury handheld gaming really doesn’t seem like a thing but I wish it was
For reference, this was about 2.5 times what you’d need to pay for a Game Boy or Game Gear back then. 2490FF would be around 380€ so around 450$, and while it’s extremely dodgy to apply inflation so loosely on a twice converted tag price, that gives us...
$450 in 1991 equals $876.03 in 2021.
In the US, it was sold for a much cooler (and more reliable for inflation purposes) $250 + taxes.
well my wife has gone to bed early so i‘m chilling finishing up toku cowboy’s DDLC stream and grinding in FFXII. i am drinking a beach plum lacroix with a lemon in it. i have taken a certain anxiety-eliminating substance. in the lap of luxury over here
@chazumaru unlike most retro stuff i have never, ever come across a working one of these despite looking from maybe 2003-2021 for a price i would consider a “deal”
i do also remember pawing at ads of it in japanese game mags in the 90s and showing it to all my indifferent friends as well -- it never really got any cheaper
@Neko Right, the PC Engine GT has a well known hardware defect linked to the use of cheap capacitors that pretty much acts as their own form of suicide battery. Virtually all PC Engine and Turbo Express units at some point will be affected. I would not recommend someone buying an original unit and rather directly buy (if you have the money and the will) a modded one. I believe the PC Engine LT has a similar problem which is why you often find them in “junk” condition even though the units look fine.
The Game Gear has a similar "ticking bomb" issue but fortunately finding modded ones is much easier and cheaper.
@treefroggy I always loved how that stand looked like some sort of otherworldly crystalline substance in photos…still don‘t think I’ve ever seen one in real life.
