Magazines

One of my fun-times recently has been flicking over random video game magazines that have been uploaded to the Internet Archive. I've got a bit of a twitter-thread of finds going here: https://twitter.com/HelloMrKearns/status/1207766708200411136

There's a great collection of them[ here](https://archive.org/details/gamemagazines) that's growing all the time. The web interface is great because you can just browse without downloading the PDF, and all uploads are made machine readable where possible so you can text search the whole collection! Really useful for quick researching.

You can even sort by [most recently uploaded](https://archive.org/details/gamemagazines?amp%3Bsort=-date&%3Bpage=5&sort=-publicdate) or add the link to your[ RSS reader](https://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?collection=gamemagazines) to get updates!

Have a look around and post something!

I‘ve been enjoying the results of your thread but I’ve not had enough browsing time - but I brought back slovakian and iranian game magazines for frank after going to those places - magazines still exist in so many places! It's neat and weird.

@exodus#2718 This is what I'm enjoying the most! Looking at magazines from different countries. Like looking through a portal in time and space.

Like, I didn't really know how much press the PC Engine (NOT the TurboGrafx-16) got in the UK, even thought it was never officially released there.

Also interesting for me Growing up in Canada and then moving to New Zealand. Two countries next to much larger ones in terms of media output. There's the odd time where you would see a Canadain or New Zealand published magazine, but mostly they're form the States or Australia. Here's one unique case. New Zealand had it's own PlayStation focused magazine: New Zealand Station. Only one issue on the Archive so far.

Always interesting when publications would do their own art. Here's some interpretations on Street Fighter.

I guess that was Joe Madureira up there with the very american comic looking one? Turns out he runs a game studio now, they made Battle Chasers. Also, imagine thinking Street Fighter II vs WWF 2 would be the fight of the century. heh

It might be a fairer fight than you think on the Atari ST. Although I believe the wrestling game was terrible as well (if they are talking about WWF European Rampage Tour). The only true loser was whoever still owned a ST in 1992 – like me!

the music is pretty rough, but at least they added a cool giraffe and maybe an elephant in africa on the main map?

This one is interesting. Total Games. A free magazine available in New Zealand stores. Issue #1 was 1997

There's a few on a local auction site here so I might take a chance.

Worth it for ads like this.

adding to the last thread, I did a little twitter thread yesterday.

Turns out the National Library of New Zealand has the complete run. It's just down the street from me so I had a look. Super weird looking at video game advertisements in the reference sections while others are taking notes on 100+ year old books.

yay! pictures are back!

There's been lots of talk about $70 games recently.
Here's a page from Australia's [MegaZone](https://archive.org/details/gamemagazines?and[]=megazone&sin=&and[]=mediatype%3A%22texts%22&sort=date&and[]=subject%3A%22MegaZone%22) from [November 1993.](https://archive.org/details/megazoneau33/page/n67/mode/2up) $169.95 for Street Fighter 2 Champion**ship** Edition - Sega Mega Drive. The Australian dollar was worth about [$0.65-$0.67 USD](https://www.rba.gov.au/statistics/historical-data.html#exchange-rates) at that time and it's not much different right now.

GET OWNED MARIO'S CAR

@exodus#3687 yeahh! It's really interesting seeing British magazines love of the PC Engine since it was never officially released over there.

as well they should have!

PCE did well in france, too, where it was grey market released and modded for french TVs by the guillemot's shop pre-ubisoft.

@exodus#3693 incroyable!
