I’m at work teaching several classes when I came close to losing my voice Saturday and it’s not fully back today. I’m chugging hot teas and doing a lot of group writing work while sounding like a beefed out Kermit the Frog if I say too much.

Last time I was visiting my partner in small town washington state, I was going to jimmy johns to pick up something for her. I worked at jimmy johns over 10 years ago, and I hadn’t been inside one since. It was run by all dudes about the same age as when I worked there, like 22. manager had a curly moustache, we got to talking, and he said stuff like “man it’s so hard to escape my small hometown” and “I want to do art full time”. I basically told him my story and he should follow his dreams etc etc.
two weeks later I’m looking for job listings in yakima, and there’s a management position newly available at that very jimmy johns location, $18/hr. I’m 90% certain I gave that dude the exact pep talk he was looking for to quit his job.

Speaking of working at Jimmy Johns, when i went to college there was one nearby with like 30 employees. My roommate dropped out of college and then told his parents he worked at that Jimmy Johns. He pretended to work there for many months and occasionally has to keep up this lie many years later when Jimmy Johns comes up again in familial conversation. Why didnt he get a job for real there you ask? I dunno it was like impossible to get a job at this point in time (even bad ones) and he was busy playing starcraft and ragnarok online.

I hope the lie got progressively more involved like having a fake uniform he was washing all the time, and leaving family events “because I have to cover Joe’s shift”

It was pretty involved back in the day! Me and the other roomie had to lie too! It was some sitcom stuff going on. But his parents lived about 90 minutes away so they weren’t stopping by every minute.

Hello, foreigner from an exotic country here. WTF is Jimmy John’s? It sounds like a fake restaurant. Is it a US only Subway/Quiznos?

Yeah its a lot like subway. Its got lots of quirky signs inside and are known for making sandwiches fast and delivering fast (or at least they are supposed to)

Their sandwiches also have very plain french bread that they scoop the filling out of and replace it with a pound of shredded lettuce. Also they typically do bicycle deliveries.

when I worked at panera there was this Polish granny also working there and she would work the meat slicer, but she thought everyone was too skinny and would slice off pieces of ham and try to give to people like you’re too skinny eat, eat. Everyone told her she had to stop but she just wouldn’t, ended up getting canned
