@“Chopemon”#p153845 I‘m excited that it’s coming to other platforms. Only downside is that I‘ll have to ditch my Switch save file. That Shiva was a pain to defeat :’(
Edit: Nevermind apparently the save files won't matter anyway because this thing is a seperate SKU. Which of course it is this is Atlus.
@“Hunter”#p153955 As one of the few weirdos that always plays full-on luck builds I do appreciate the leniency. It's a shame the difficulty curve is like a ski slope, but that is definitely preferable to just getting out stat-ed and having to grind or certain build types being unviable.
I had a weird mental block after playing SMTIV and Apoc where I just kept wanting V to work more like IV . . . Looking forward to using this as a chance to give it another shot. Hopefully on a device that can run it a bit better this time.
I enjoyed what SMTV was trying to achieve with its maze-like overworld replacing regular dungeons, and overall I had a great time with the system, battle, (hilarious) negotiations and world exploration, but I am not sure how a Maniax version can fix the terrible plot (and really anything involving the human characters of this game).
Hopefully, they’ll improve the level design of the two dungeons that sucked, which was a bit of the problem when the game only had three dungeons…
Been really enjoying Persona 3 Reload! It‘s my first time through the game and somehow over the past 5+ years of being a Persona fan I have managed to elude a lot of spoilers. I know about the very end of the game and kinda sorta what The Answer is about, but I don’t really know how we get to that point, so I'm excited!
I'm currently in July, just after the full moon
Maybe this is a discussion for once I finish the game but I've seen some talk online about how a lot of the characters seem a bit different in Reload and that has me curious. Yukari and Junpei were apparently meaner in FES/Portable? Fuuka seems different too, apparently? Were the characters really that different?
@“Hunter”#p155913 It‘s been about five years or so since my first and only play through of FES and the characters in Reload perfectly evoke my hazy memories of them. To the point that if the new dialogue and text were hacked into the old game and I wasn’t told about it I don‘t know if I’d pick up on it. Fuuka not sounding like a woman doing a little boy's type voice anymore might be a giveaway. Everyone seems fairly close to my memory of them. Yukari and Junpei are still big jerks at times, Koromaru is still unquestionably the best and Ken is still a sad sack that is never getting put into the party.
@“Hunter”#p155913 I‘ve also been playing through Reload and enjoying it. I too hadn’t played any version of P3 before, and this one coming out was the nudge I needed to finally dive in.
Just this evening out of curiosity, I loaded up _FES_ to have a look at it -- and I am surprised at just how much of a remake the new one is, rather than a remaster (to borrow a recent(ish) IC show conversation topic). It is not "just" that they've redone the game in the P5 engine, all the voice acting and music seems to be re-recorded also.
The world geometry in _FES_ is laughably out of scale with the character models. The landing to the stairs in the student dorm looks like a multi-multi-million dollar mansion lobby. The hospital bed looks like it would fit about ten people in it.
In what is surely a classic case of preferring what one is familiar with or happened to see first -- I think I strongly prefer _Reload_ from what I have seen!

When watching a graphics comparison video I realized something I find endearing about Persona 3 and 4 is (like 2) the relationship between locations and character models, that is that it looks more fake/diorama-like in 3 (and 4) than in 3R (and 5). When the world is more realistically scaled and we see it closer up, in greater detail, I suppose I expect the characters to behave more realistically, too; set against the tone of the character writing, which is pretty broad, I feel more of a dissonance between the two. Out of context it's hard to argue against the look of 3R, but taken alongside everything else I see the scale in the original as a good thing!
Is the upcoming DLC for it that was just announced the other day a remake of _The Answer_, or should I go load up FES and have a look at that? (can you start it without having a clear save on your ps2?)
I probably have questions about P3! I'm not sure I really care all that much to ask them, however.
Ultimately, I had a _fine_ time with it, but it isn't anywhere near my favourite Persona game. I think I found exactly zero of the social links compelling, many of them bad, and some outright repugnant. I'm looking at you, Magician arcana.
Unfortunately, I found that P3R suffered from an all too common problem for games of this type: combat was the most interesting at the start of the game, and essentially trivialised by the end. For the first block of Tartarus I felt like I had to make interesting choices during combat about whether or not to use magic or stick to basic attacks, because SP was a genuinely scarce resource. I even went to spend the 7 fragments at the clock to recharge. By around mid-game SP was only a concern for teammates, but that was mitigated by subbing someone out if they spent it all. I never had a problem getting to the top of any particular zone and beating the bosses along the way all in a single run. By about the 2/3rds point or so, I never even had to sub anyone out and had my A-team crew just running the whole thing without a problem. I could probably have run the last few ones without any teammates, even.

From my view of the trailer it looks like a remake of The Answer.
They may have changed some things around for it though.
I decided that while the game was still fresh in my mind, I should watch the P3 movies. I remembered rather enjoying the P4 series when I watched it, so I thought there could be hope here.
My ratings:
The final part is the best of the four, but none of them are great. Parts 2 and especially 3 were _bad_: they were each nothing more than approximately 90 minutes of Stuff Happens To People, with no explanation, reason, discussion, or motivation.
I suppose one should not expect too much from a video game story, but there sure were some weird character and pacing choices made here.
I can't say I recommend doing as I did, unless you too find yourself unable to sleep in overnight 30C (about 86F) min temperature and just need to put something on for six hours or so.
@“beets”#p156916 Play Persona 4 (Note: this should’ve been done before playing 3)
I already have this step complete, in the correct order!
My order of Persona experience has been:
- watching giant bomb play P4
- playing P5
- playing P4G
- watching the P4 anime
- playing P5R
- watching the first episode of the P5 anime and dropping it
- playing P3R
- watching all 4 parts of the P3 movie
I think I’ll wait for the P3R _Episode Aigis_ expansion later this year before I consider _The Answer_ or not. I hear near universal not-great things about it! (At least, the ps2 version)
My Megaten play order has been:
-Persona 5
-Persona 5 Royal
-Tokyo Mirage Sessions: #FE Encore
-SMT V
-SMT III: Nocturne
-SMT IV
-SMT IV Apocalypse
-P4G (I made it all the way to December and then put it on hold… I’ll come back to it)
-P3R (Currently in mid-October)
So I come back to SMT V with a lot more megaten experience under my belt. I’m excited to see how the changes are and if my feelings on the game change at all viewing it through a more experienced lens
I’m excited for vengeance. Looks like they added at least one more dungeon, hopefully they’ve learned how to make a half-decent indoor area. Think I’ll be sure to get this at launch. I held off on buying P3R at launch because it was on Game Pass. Looked around the other day to see if the physical Xbox release had dropped in price, but it’s out of stock everywhere.
I wouldn’t worry about finishing P4. First time I played it I intentionally got one of the bad endings in December. I liked that experience more than my most recent play through where I got the true ending. The last two areas of the game are pretty not good.
