Ah okay that makes a ton of sense. Reddit was showing conflicting information. I found a rom set that’s labeled “Everdrive”, think that would be OK zipped or still unzipped?
Going thru and unzipping things 1 by 1 now, starting with the most must plays on my list. Really cool how well the N64 games run, just played around a bit and pretty blown away.
Everything should be unzipped. It cuts down on the read/write of the sd card and zipped games could potentially lower compatibility.
You should be able to just crtl+a, right-click, and use “extract here”, then sort by file type to get the roms out if each game is zipped.
But yes the /games folder for each respective system should just have the uncompressed rom with the correct extension, such as:
/n64/gameName.z64
/snes/gameName.sfc
/gb/gameName.gb
/gbc/gameName.gbc
and so on
One extra note - put your disc games in their own folders like:
/psx/spyro/spyro.chd
the MiSTer will make a memory card per folder, so a multidisc game will share the same mem card this way
for CHDs for multi disc games what is the best folder format? I’ll be ordering a Taki Mister and am prepping.
Also any software to create the folder setup with loose chds in a single folder?
bin cues will be the same, but you’ll only see the .cue file in the OSD when picking the game. Just all of the same game files into one folder.
The MiSTer will reset the core if it switches game folders, so if all of the game discs are in the same folder and you swap one, it’s like popping open the drive and swapping the disc without resetting.
For adding them to folders there are some scripts, commands and file management applications you can look up. I’d recommend separating out the multi-disc games first, then running a script on all of the single disc games
Ran into some PSX issues last night. Insta crash of Dino Crisis once it switched to player control and Einhander intro movie an unwatchable mess, but gameplay 100% fine. My Taki RAM seems fine so might try a different source for those ROMs.
Stupid question incoming. I don’t have any experience with capture cards etc and I’ve looked around on different forums to see if I need anything specific for streaming from a dual output mister while I play on a crt. My findings were inconclusive. Is there anything in particular I need to look for in a capture card from a compatibility standpoint? I feel as dumb as a box of rocks wrt to resolution outputs etc and am running on little sleep. Any product recommendations for this pitiable oaf/consumerist mark?
I don’t forsee myself using a capture card with any modern consoles but I guess having the option may be a nice side benefit.
I think any HDMI capture card should work. I picked up the ShadowCast 2 for mine and it works like a charm with Genki Arcade and regular screen sharing.
You can output 480p, 720p, or 1080p from the HDMI port so it should be good with most up to date capture equipment. There may be issues with CEC, but generally the MiSTer isn’t doing anything special by default over HDMI.
However, I was recently trying to get my old Elgato HD60 to work with the MiSTer and I kept getting a no signal error. I had to resort to using a RetroTink 2x and use its composite input, while using the svideo on my CRT. Thankfully the newer analog boards allow for dual composite and svideo out. Makes it feel like I’m streaming a real old console I guess
Question: Has anyone tried monkeying around with the beta CD-i core? I’ve had a longstanding interest in the CD-i since watching a bunch of Retro Pals streams about it, but the emulation situation with it on PC is pretty shaky. There’s not a lot of footage of the core online, but I figured if anyone was likely to have played around with it it’d be someone on here.
For anyone else who needs it, here is how to use a Guncon 1 with Reflex Adapt on Mister in any light gun supported core. I successfully played Point Blank and Duck Hunt with these steps last night and want to share the goodness
requires crt
Reflect adapt plugs into regular usb port. Plug it in
use reflex updater.sh to update and select the profile you want that has guncon support
hit mode on the reflex adapt to go to the guncon mode
you may need to unplug the reflex adapt from usb and plug it back it in. Not sure why. Plug in guncon
put guncon sync pass through on composite video or green component on your tv. Scart you’re on your own
turn on mister. Ensure guncon has been recognized by reflex adapt. Unplug and replug reflex adapt if necessary.
on main mister screen hit F10. This brings up the lightgun calibration menu. Aim at edges and follow prompts.
open core that supports lightgun
set core controller as the supported gun ie zapper guncon etc
hit F10 in the core menu and go through the same calibration steps. Required for every core.
on the core menu also set buttons config on the gun. May differ between games.
Never messed with a real CDi or PC emulation, but it seems pretty good! Loaded up the games I threw at it just fine for the most part. Had a game freeze and another have the music drop out, but was able to reset the games to get them to work. It’s definitely worth trying out. Even works on my CRT!
I think you have to join the discord to get the core. Check the picture below for the latest version and info. It does require a special MiSTer main file (rename it to MiSTer_CDi), but you can set it load when the core boots in your .ini file by putting:
[CD-i]
main=MiSTer_CDi
at the bottom. You’ll need to procure your own bios files too, but the core’s github page has the md5 checksums needed to ensure they are good.
I wish mister pi would do a drop. Like once they get enough preorders they create an order for that amount. I keep forgetting to check if thy’re back in stock. I’m probably incorrectly conceptualizing how it projects like these are done.
yeah they make a huge amount all at once and then release them all at once. Taki has posted images of the 1000s of units piled up in his office. You could theoretically take peoples money ahead of time like Analogue and then hit order when you hit some threshold, but I think that’s just more paperwork for them at this point and people get antsy waiting
Thanks for checking it out! I’m on the MiSTer discord but I’ve had my PVM and MiSTer put away for a bit. There are some pretty cool games on the CD-i but the hardware can be difficult to get your hands on in working order. In particular there’s a timekeeper chip present in all models of CD-i that has a battery, but the battery is inside of the epoxy covering the die, so you have to shave away the epoxy to replace the battery and that’s something I don’t really want to deal with.
Will have to get everything out and see if the games I’m interested in (Third Degree, Girl’s Club, some of the other weirdo ones) work alright.
I love the fact that this guy is making the SiSTer ecosysten and fpga gaming more affordable but man does he suck at branding.
like i assume this is just a de10 nano with the some bells and whistles in a psx case with maybe a custom psx themed launcher(?) but he’s making it seem kinda like an analogue ps1 only fpga machine
It sounds like it actually is a full PS1 clone with memory card and dualshock ports and a disc reader, but can also run all the MiSTer cores too? It says “disc support not pictured” which would be a weird way to say it doesn’t play them
I’m assuming he has a video forthcoming that’ll clarify this a little more, he probably should have released the video simultaneously
this is cool having built in snac adapters for controllers + memory card ports + its just a regular fpga in a cuter form + it still lets you load other cores + it will have a video port just for lightgun support and all of the video out options + memory expansion!!!
but its called the ss one. so its cringe.
(i really hope it has some kind of psone lcd screen compatibility to make it a sort of ridiculous portable device tho)
also lame of taki to only post substantial info on x the everything app
It looks like on X he deleted the original post which makes me wonder if the comments dunking on the name got to him and he’s rethinking calling it the SS One. So yeah he might be a little bit bad at branding
