This is the only part of those peoples’ lives I found enviable. I would love to be known for a novel called Boner
Probably woulda been a better story if it was about someone who had stayed in the T Dot (OOOOOH-OOOOOOOOH, REP IT EVERYWHERE I GOOOOOOOOOO)
i’m a man that’s easily moved……to a bigger house!
Bro…how did you make it so that you could have more than 3 periods
i tapped it more than 3 times. next question!
My partner and I also didn’t like it and similarly we’re united in our haterness. Just didn’t feel compelled by that romance at all. Hated the way everyone treated each other.
don’t know if this will help, but I can add that I haven’t seen it
It’s Amadeus time now gamers!!!
Doesn’t quite land as a mic-drop line, just driving the point home that the film seems more carefully constructed to win its author an Oscar, than to tell its story about an artist in love. Hong Sangsoo’s movies are a great counter-example too, if you haven’t seen any. Man oh man does that guy have things to say about artists in love
okay that makes sense. yeah for the record i don’t think the movie is “good” and wasn’t interested at first because it seemed like a conscious post-a24 movie in that it was aping indie aesthetics (and “aesthetic” aesthetics) for the nyt arts section crowd. it turns out it was doing that! but hey don’t we got a bit of the genteel in all of us.
have not seen any of the other guys movies, do you have one you’d recommend?
It’s not the most typical of his stuff, and it’s not really comparable to Past Lives in its focus on romance (though it’s there) – but I love The Novelist’s Film. It’s streaming on Kanopy, as is a bunch of his other recent stuff. Can’t go wrong with any of them really. All great hang-out movies
Yeah, that scene was really weird. I feel the movie wanted to go for a ironic, melodramatic Sirk type of movie and it ends up falling flat in several areas because the characters are bland and the scenes in general are whatever. The ending is possibly the only thing that feels somewhat powerful.
Out of all the characters, the main protagonist seem to be different and unique, but there’s no such portrayal or good representation coming out of it. I needed to see more of her and maybe more about the other characters, too.
YES! He and Hamaguchi may be the best dialogue writers out there (and writers directly).
Sorry, but the review posted that was about to trash Hong Sang-Soo to favor Celine Song makes me laugh so hard. Imagine hating someone who is a good writer and comparing him to someone worse.
I liked the movie, @MoH, but I didn’t love it so much. It felt nice, but also somewhat generic.
seeing Past Lives described as “elevated mumblecore” definitely makes me not want to watch it.
“more literature than cinema” that’s just bad news for everyone from every angle
