Halle Berry did get him back on the red carpet this year.

I haven’t seen Anora yet. A few early Sean Baker films are on the Criterion Channel right now so I’m gonna try to watch Take Out while I make some art tonight. I really loved Tangerine and The Florida Project (and Greg the Bunny.)

I do appreciate the cinematic experience in theory, but most of the local independent theaters have some issues with things like gentrification or workers’ rights (looking at you, Alamo Drafthouse) that kind of make it a wash.

I’ve got my Longlegs on tonight.

A :latvia: Latvian movie made on Blender for €3.5 Million won the best animated feature award.

So I guess that’s cool, although I get the sense it’s just because the people who voted like cats and we’re not too far removed from a longplay of Stray on Youtube getting an Oscar.

It was pretty good. These kinds of animated movies aren’t even my thing and I enjoyed it

I don’t really disagree with anyone in here’s takes on Anora but I loved it regardless mostly because Mikey Madison gives one of the best performances I’ve ever seen and carries the movie on her back into highs it doesn’t deserve to hit. I’m happy that it beat Emilia Perez at any rate, and I’m happy Madison picked up Best Actress.

The ending sucks

Yeah I think Anora was neither my favorite of the year nor a hate watch for me, and I came away feeling like besides the expected Emilia wins pretty net neutral not too evil Oscars

Sorry, I don’t know who else on here is in Mexico, if anyone – or if these locations are anywhere near you. If they are, however, this would be an amazing double feature to go to!

Too late for me cause they already played them in my town but didn’t get to go. I actually know most of the people organizing this!

Pretty cool that it’s happening though!!

I showed my partner Shin Godzilla last night. She’s a HUGE old Godzilla fan but has never watched or heard of this one. She was utterly perplexed but ultimately delighted by this retelling of Godzilla detached from the atom bomb parable and placed onto the great Tsunami. It’s such a special movie.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was really solid. I watched it to have a low-key funny adventure, and I was surprised how well it captured the setting and lore as well.

Also, while I think the plotting could come across as rather loose (much of the film is trying to solve a Big Problem, which leads in several directions), I think the plot models the problem solving typical in good roleplaying. They stumble back and forth through various plans, based on what they think is possible. Sometimes they realize new applications for existing tools (like realizing they have a hither-thither staff, and then realizing new ways they can use it), which changes the plan. It’s nice to see a group with screen chemistry mucking through a problem and putting together the pieces.

I know we mostly talk about film and cinema on this thread but this is the movies thread, and I’m starting to wonder if I have a bit of a blindspot for movies
As in, y’know, the stuff that reruns on TBS/TNT. When am I gonna get around to Mission Impossible II or Ghostbusters II or Back to the Future Part II or any other movie with a “II” in the title?? Do I need to order a pizza and just binge a couple of these? Happily watch some mid?

I mostly watch what I consider movies over film when left to my own devices. It can be like a more compact form of television. Instead of watching dozens of hours of a show, I can hang with a two hour movie.

For sure; of all places the IC forum should be a place where Back to the Future 2 can be enjoyed alongside Supermarket Woman. Movies are movies!

Apologies - I was being tongue-in-cheek re: films vs cinema vs movies

That being said, I do lament that I graduated college right at the time it became normal to not have cable and just do streaming, and I feel like I missed out on something there. I shudder to think about the kids growing up with just streaming and will never learn that Bedazzled is a better Brendan Fraser movie than his Oscar-winning turn in The Whale

For me, there is a differnece between movies and film. It’s not anything I take seriously or use to judge people, but there is a distinction. @MoH post illustrates it pretty well. Its a bit of a divide between hi-brow and lo-brow. Both can be good and both can be bad. Last week I watched the fantastic film, Sword of Doom. I also watched the great movie, Planes Trains and Automobiles.
