Movies Talk

I watched a couple more movies tonight. I have a lot more lined up after everyone’s top ten lists, too!

Any semblance of a through line for this one-gal, personal-pan film fest is now gone!

The Last Showgirl (2024)

This was pretty good. Very sad :'( I thought it was beautifully shot and the acting performances were great, especially from Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis, but the story and characters felt a little underdeveloped. It highlights its themes well (aging as a woman in entertainment, the vanity / selfishness of pursuing your passion, delusions of grandeur), but personally I didn’t think these were grounded enough through the story / characters, so they came across as a bit generic. PA’s character Shelly in particular kind of felt like she hadn’t existed outside of the club for the thirty years prior.

Brazil (1985)

Last month, I read an article in the Observer likening the Trump administration’s first few months of messy destruction to the “evil and bumbling” authoritarianism on display in Brazil. I’d seen this movie for the first time over ten years ago, but watching it again now is truly chilling, the parallel of its inciting plot point with a man being detained (and ultimately killed) due to an administrative error in particular.

It also highlights the collective ambivalence exceptionally well — carrying on with daily routines/work/dinner/shopping/fucking within the authoritarian state, and always vulnerable to its whims. The lack of closure from a happy end feels more like an urgent call to action than ever.

I was so incredibly nice to my mom after watching this movie

Ugh, her daughter’s reaction to her show was heartbreaking (but justified). I thought maybe the detail about her interest in photography might be the connecting point between the two (some kind of self-expressive outlet) but not the case. The misdirect with the daughter “showing up” to the last performance was strange, was that just desire or delusion?

Also, I really felt for the girl who saw the crew “as a family,” with Shelly “as a mom.” When she came to Shelly for support the one night and got rejected so harshly, it killed me : (

I went to see ‎Opus recently. It wasn’t great and many have pointed out it’s overdone similarities to The Menu, Midsommar and some other similar cult / folk horror movies that have come out over the past decade.

And it got me thinking, what was the first movie to have a strange, isolated setting ruled over by a charismatic leader who invites a small group of sycophantic outsiders into their world only to watch / cause their untimely deaths and is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory the original folk / cult horror movie?

I never do things like this but I knew I’d be super upset if I missed it - just bought a triple feature pass to see Swamp Thing, Fire Walk with Me and RoboCop with Ray Wise in a couple weeks :3 :3 :3

I’ve seen Fire Walk a jillion times, but I think I’ve honestly only seen Swamp Thing and RoboCop like once each. I know RoboCop is like canon at this point, so I’m excited to see the not-TBS edited movie.

Hoping they’ll screen this gem before something
