@“2501”#p93549 Devastated that still no one else has seen Tar so we can’t all fight about whether it’s good or not.
It’s not even screening here until the end of January 2023. :(

Tonight‘s another very special broadcast. and I know I say it a lot, have I ever lied? In this case, it’s my 100th broadcast on the behalf Wonderville, with the highlight being a very special VHS mixtape, courtesy of a very special guest: FORGOTTEN_VCR! If you‘ve never heard of him, then GOOD, cuz I’m super delighted (as well as proud) to be your introduction.
Though I'm also continuing last week's FORT90 FILM CLUB theme with another epic, via the near 5 hour long, so-called cuz it’s true) greatest road movie of all time...

Stream starts at the usual time, 8PM EST, and at the usual destination…

Watched Emmett Otter‘s Jug Band Christmas with the family last night. Pretty cool little Muppet gaiden side story thing. Wholesome and ultimately uplifting, yet more stark and less sparkly than most Christmas kids movies. I’d definitely recommend it, especially if you have kids in the audience.
Anyway, I've been getting more into Christmas movies over the years. I've seen most of the obvious classics (It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th St, Meet Me In St Louis) and many from the "Christmas but not Christmas" canon (Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Eyes Wide Shut, The Green Knight). What other lesser known or out of the way Christmas or Christmas -adjacent movies can people recommend? I'd be interested in any subgenre so throw the net as wide as you want.
Tonight is another late night edition of the FORT90 FILM CLUB broadcasting from Wonderville, as well as the conclusion of my month-long survey of “EPICS”.
All I can say about tonight's feature is how there are cinematic train-wrecks, and then there is...

Southland Tales sure was something. I‘d never seen it before, and I’m left wondering why. Glad to have seen it now!

No Mad Max Fury Road though so meh list.
>
No The Dark Knight? Shame.
>
#2-6 are cool and expected picks. #1 looks like something I can't see myself ever watching.
>
Never heard of #1 until now.
>
Vertigo and The Sopranos are interesting to me in that their just horrible cinematography that has aged like garbage never get brought up as a negative in these best of all time lists.
>
Vertigo at #2 is like putting Final Fantasy 7 (the original) as one of the best video games ever made mostly because of its graphics.
>
of course the number 1 is a move 99% of people have never heard of lol
>
The Fountain is not anywhere on there. A travesty.
>
Also No Roger Rabbit top ten? MOVIE NERDS DISAPPOINTING ME FOR MY GOAT PICK
>
Motherfucking Jeanne Dielman, man. I had to watch that film multiple times getting my Film and Literature BA, and let me me tell you, it is very much NOT the greatest film of all time. All three hours and twenty one minutes of its boring ass, uneventful run time.
@“yeso”#p95324 What is this?
Honestly, I'm really surprised to see Beau travail that high, but I gotta say: making a prestigious film resort to lists as the ultimate mechanism for being in the trend and being the "How do you do, fellow kids?" of movie lists is really dull.
@“xhekros”#p95325 it's the one-a-decade poll of critics and programmers
there's a seperate Director's list, but that gets less attention: https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/directors-100-greatest-films-all-time
_Histoire(s) du cinéma_
_Daughters of the Dust_
_Sans Soleil_
_Le Mépris_
_Wanda_
_Killer of Sheep_
_Meshes of the Afternoon_
_Beau travail_
all interesting to see make the top 100 or place as highly as they did I think. Surprising that _Jeanne Dielman_ is #1 - going to be a lot of marvel brains struggling with that one (see quote post above)
Honestly kind of a good list? Glad to see the new number 1 be the new number 1
@“TracyDMcGrath”#p95327 News From Home on there too
@“yeso”#p95326
Do they publish more complete data anywhere? Or, just their Top ~ 100?
I don't agree with the tone the mouthbreather took there, but, surely _Mad Max: Fury Road_ got some level of recognition somewhere...
I'm not film buff by any means but I enjoyed seeing movies get on the first poll conducted since their release, like _Get Out_ and _Parasite._
You gotta wonder what might happen to poll placement of individual movies from any younger-ish, still working directors, who have put out great movies before but put out something really special in between polls, like _Parasite._ I wonder if _The Host_ or _Memories of Murder_ or _Barking Dogs Never Bite_ had a presence on 2012 list, but got pushed down by _Parasite..._ not everyone can be as powerful as @chazumaru and just devote all of their 10 picks to one director/franchise.
@“yeso”#p95322
Oh good, _Citizen Kane_ is bumped down, I can feel somewhat less bad that I wasn't an Orson Welles doing such great work back when I was 25 years old; now to casually look into Chantal Akerman's age when making the greatest film of all time....
@“Gaagaagiins”#p95341 they posted the individual contributor lists in 2012, but don't see that anywhere just yet
@"soapbox"#p95350 Hitchcock had to be in his 60s when he made _Vertigo_ though, so there's that
@“yeso”#p95326 No, no, I know that. The thing that really striked me are all the comments and notes. Also, I'm kinda appalled to see how many filmbros would crap onto a list just because a woman made those films.
@"soapbox"#p95350 Akerman started pretty early on her career, and I think she was 24-25 when she did Je, tu, il, elle. Her first work was when she was a teenager, if I'm not mistakes (not as young as when Gareel did his first short, but kinda, and she did Je, tu, il elle before Jeanne Dielman, which was pretty great, too!).
@“xhekros”#p95354
>
Damn, is Do the Right Thing that good?
>
The love of Hitchcock among film snobs is one of the more baffling things I've seen. He was a hyper mainstream director whose films had no lasting insights about anything, they look bad now, and Hitchcock himself sucked as a person.
>
Cool but it seems to be missing Spider-Man No Way Home
>
That's just WAY too much French film for me
I have to say: Sight and Sound has been successful at stirring the filmbro's pot xD
@“xhekros”#p95464
Yeah it's easy to get swept up in the dumb frustration looking at the list of films that have dropped off the updated list (and man did I realize how FilmBro-y it sounds to say out loud “what do you mean they got rid of Godfather II, Raging Bull, and The Wild Bunch!?!”), but honestly my main feelings (and what I hope others take from this) is just that feeling of….man, I wanna watch some movies now.
(and maybe its the _Everything Everywhere All At Once_ effect, but there is part of me happy to see _In The Mood for Love_ continue to crawl towards the top, truly a top 5 of all time film and glad more people are saying as such/driven to see that movie more)

>
@“soapbox”#p95486 man, I wanna watch some movies now.
Same. I love pretty much everything on here that I've seen and I just want to rip into everything on here that I haven't.
