Movies Talk

I just watched Neptune Frost, and loved it.

Some fantastic lines of dialogue in this film.

@“Tradegood”#p105065 I think our generation has more trouble relating to LaMotta then Ebert’s.

That's a good point regarding generational differences that I didn't really consider.

I still gotta see Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Kundun, and The Age of Innocence.

is the audience supposed to relate to Jake? He‘s dispassionately portrayed as a cripplingly insecure, violent psychopath whose fleeting sense of self-worth comes from being fleetingly good at a brutal sport. This is an anti-hero, we’re supposed to be repelled I think, right?

just anecdotally I‘ve observed middle-aged fellas of my dad’s cohort so I guess more or less the Roger Ebert generation miss the point (imo) of the classic Scorsese films, and look at Goodfellas as some kind of buddy movie. I worked with a guy a while back of the same age who thought Tony Soprano was cool. So idk if the older generation is the one who gets it and we don't

@“yeso”#p105550 is the audience supposed to relate to Jake?

Maybe relate in the sense of having a certain idea of his public persona and fame that the movie undermines. But in a post-OJ Simpson world maybe there's a bit more detachment from the idea that pro athletes deserve any kind of role model status.

Just sort of vaguely speculating here though as to why so many people gravitated towards Raging Bull as the Clearly Superior movie to Taxi Driver for a while but now the needle has decidedly moved back the other way.

I dont know if you guys have heard if this Jordan Peele fella and his movie Get Out but it's pretty good. Found it unsettling in a good way.

Also, I love Stephen Root.

Us? Nope.

@“connrrr”#p105103 The Watermelon Woman

I love pretty much everything about it, but one of my favorite aspects is that it appears like a time capsule of of 90s lesbian Philadelphia. And probably not even on purpose! Just as a result of being a low budget movie made by a lesbian... I imagine she just asked her friends to be in it as extras. That's why everyone in line at the farmer's market is queer. It's great.

I highly recommend checking out The Fae Richards archive by Zoe Leonard, the photography project that serves as the material for the film. There are used copies of the photo books commonly around online, and it's something a University library might have too.

Saw that Cocaine Bear. Even as a Snakes on a Plane apologist I could not find anything to like about this movie.

Can't even commit to its misanthropic bit, as it keeps veering away from very rude gratuitous bear mauling to sap it up with some cornball sentiment.

@“Coffinwarehouses”#p105939 I can‘t get behind those high concept one-punchline movies. I get what they’re going for, and I‘m sure it delivers exactly on the premise and winks at the camera a bunch, but the whole exercise feels kind of unnecessary. I remember back when Rubber came out, everyone was talking about it like it was groundbreaking, but I didn’t like it and thought it overstayed its welcome almost immediately. Maybe it would work as a short, but I think those kinda movies aren't as fun as whatever you picture in your head.

Unless cocaine bear is trying to sell coke to Alfred Molina and ends up having a shootout while sister christian is playing, then I'm back in.

@“Tradegood”#p105956 Oh yeah I forgot about Rubber. Def remember the hype and thought “no thanks” so glad to hear someone validate my decision to avoid it!

I remember reading that nicholas cage as nicholas cage movie was good against all odds, as far as one note meme premises go

It was funny initially but similarly the bit did wear pretty thin. It doesn't really go far enough up its own ass with the premise unlike, say, Adaptation which I love.

I finally watched 2021's DUNC

and I did not like it. I have been surrounded by people extolling its virtue as a great piece of work since release, and I just don't see what they are seeing. Or rather, I do not _feel_ what they are _feeling_. It was a pretty movie, sure -- but it was shallow. Hollow. I did not believe for a moment that any of these characters even knew each other, let alone that some of them belonged to the same family.

@“rejj”#p106034 heck yeah, >!DUNC on 'em!<

I watched Some Like it Hot </s>(1959) for the first time ever after kinda wondering about it for years, and it was a riot. Tony Curtis was pretty cute in drag. Monroe was really funny!!!

Watching an old Hollywood movie for the first time in what feels like a while was a breath of fresh air. Everything is so fake lol all the acting is canned mannerisms, the score isn't all up in your face constantly, the dialogue is always front and centre. Everything is discreet and contained like in a diorama. It was very hangouty.

I liked Disobedience (2017) aka Two Rachels!!

I remember when Rachel McAdams was on a little show called *Slings & Arrows*, but this isn't the television thread.

How did I never notice how hot Rachel Weisz is??

What kind of backlash was there about this movie when it came out? Was it from the UK or abroad? From Jews? I found [this article](https://www.them.us/story/how-disobedience-fails-queer-jews), I don't know that it's representative. Gosh, I wonder why I either didn't hear about the film or forgot about it.

I'm not an expert nor do I have access to inside information but I feel pretty confident that Cocaine Bear was created in a lab to be a movie trailer that would spread virally and make people buy movie tickets. The movie itself was an afterthought

Okay, this would definitely sell me on the movie
