N64 sprite-based 2D games

if it ain't Baku, take it back-u

Today I learned that Golden Sun was planned to be an N64 game, and that's easy to imagine. It would look a lot like tactics ogre. They had also made a game for Saturn that used the same pre rendered character and bg style, Shining Holy Ark.

@“chazumaru”#p43064 Ask yourself: what is Mah-Jong for you? Merely something to try one’s luck? A source of living? The ultimate table game that reflects the universe? The meaning of life? You have to try it for yourself.

Hey look who randomly got a spotlight on them Internets!

I gotta say not one of these games makes the N64 look like a 2D monster. But it can do 2D pretty okay!

In my experience, PS1 is the most difficult console that generation to get ISO’s loaded onto and it’s why I splurged on a PSIO back in 2018– I was DONE with not having all the os1 games I ever wanted to play on CRT.

The highly sensitive analog controls and powerful rumble make this one a little unique. I have an intense fondness for the graphics and sound mainly from the nostalgic experiences I had playing this in like the first grade.

Here is a little reggae-ish song that probably set me up to enjoy Umihara Kawase's sound font 10 years later.

imagine being so absolutely feral as to completely wear out your n64 control stick playing Pokemon Puzzle League, when the d-pad is right there.

@“treefroggy”#p144063 I mean, how many other games use the D-pad enough for players to consider that as an option?

@“Video Game King”#p144065 more than it sounds like you‘d think? There are 2D games on modern consoles and often people opt for the joystick over the d-pad for them, mainly children. It was a joke but it’s more like kids using control stick to play sonic mania than not understanding that it exists to be used in the first place hahaha.

@“treefroggy”#p144187 I was talking about the N64 specifically. With so few games making meaningful use of the left side of the controller, it would be easy in practice to overlook any one game that does.

@“Video Game King”#p144194 yeah I know. I’m too biased to reply to this

@“Video Game King”#p144065 I've used the d-pad for some of the fps games on 64. Using it for foward/back/strafe with the analog stick to aim is the ideal way to play Quake I/II, Doom64, Goldeneye, etc. The only other game that comes to mind would be KI Gold.

anyone with interest in this should check out jikkyou powerful pro yakyuu on the Nintendo 64. Beautiful.
