Non traditional displays that aren’t CRTs.

I found a technology I had not heard of before. It’s called laser phosphor display. It works like a CRT but instead of electrons it stimulates the phosphors with laser light. I ordered one panel, I believe it’s 1080p but from what I’ve seen the images look similar to plasma. Very clean, three color subpixels arranged periodically in rows rather than staggered like bricks on a CRT. I have no idea how one is supposed to get an image into it as it’s primarily used as a tiled multi screen for a video wall and it’s so new that there’s limited documentation. My future self will surely not mind me getting him into this mess. I hope it makes more sense once I see it in person.

Just learned that these panels are 240p. This is going to be an interesting experience.

The laser phosphor display arrived completely broken and the box wet. I started a shipping claim but I don’t think I’m going to order another. It sounds like it’s filled with broken glass on top of the major chip on the counter

Ok so the other one came and these things don’t come with any documentation. There is no normal video jack. The thing is powered by a motherboard like atx 24 pin connector with two other cables that look like pc fan power cables. There are 3 lan cable ports one labeled in, out and one hidden with no label. The phosphorus are rbg in color or it’s a colored mask that sits in front of the phosphors that gives them color and the phosphor just provides luminosity. There’s so little public information on these displays that I’m already over my head.

Here’s a closeup comparison between a normal color display and the laser phosphor display. The display is off just for the record. That’s simply its natural set of colors. I’m going to call some friends who are actually smart and work on novel problems for a living and have them take a look after I email the manufacturer for documentation

I’m going to open up the broken one since I don’t have to return it. I’m curious what optics are in there. These aren’t under vacuum pressure since they lasers are still good are going through small amounts of atmosphere with out spreading. I’ll post picture when I actually get around to it.

A standard definition plasma tv showed up in my area. They’re asking 100 which is crazy at least to me, a person who is looking for that exact thing. I sent them an offer of 60 which still seems high but we’ll see.
