Outside Kids - the thread where we talk about gardens and nature and stuff

If I am being honest, I haven’t bought much in the way of video games over the past 18 months. I have budgeted for a PS5 for a few years now, and every time I have an opportunity to spend that $500 I can find neither joy or justification for it.

Plants are so inexpensive, even boutique ones. I’m loving my new hobby. I have a lovely new anthurium hybrid coming to me from Savannah, Georgia. I love my little aroids.

Edit: After reading this out loud, I have realized I said “love” three times consecutively. I’m taking my writer’s cap off and keeping it that way, because I meant it every time.

That’s what I want to do but I can’t find good information on how quickly these metals accumulate. Test is expensive as you have to test for all of them individually. I also have a lot of metal exposure from doing ceramics and there’s not a good information on exposure levels even if I use the appropriate protection.

Also they’re not airborne. They are shed and in the air for a short while and fall.

Hmm, but it sounds like these metals could get into your pots, eh? you’d need like… a greenhouse or something. I used to live right next to/under a freeway and we’d just get a layer of black exhaust dust over everything every few days. it’s wild that we’re just supposed to live in these places and pay for the privilege.

That happened when I lived in Seattle. It was so gross. When I bought my house there was a shallow forest between me and the highway until the city cut it down for the light rail. Then the soot started to appear.

I’m probably overly paranoid about the metals. I just worry about career exposers to things.

kudos for not letting this become your killdozer moment

Concerns make sense to me! I got my air filter rolling and every time i see any chemical or debris I dont understand I exercise caution…

Some construction site spilled some concrete dust? I read the back of that bucket when I patched my foundation. Walking the long way around that dust.

Are street fairs common in your area?

in Brazil it’s very common. In my city specially the bigger ones happen on sunday. It’s the go to place to get fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh spices, bootleg clothes/toys or get kitchen stuff repairs. Also, house plants and fresh fish.

you can get peeled/diced fruits and vegetables too.

If you want the better stuff, you have to come earlier but if you want cheap stuff, come at the closing hours.

A must have snack is Pastel (deep fried pastry) with all sorts of fillings. I always eat ground beef and pizza (mozzarella with tomato and oregano)

There’s a lot of condiments to enhance your pastel. My favourites are vinaigrette and garlic mayo.

this is pastel de vento (wind pastel) with no filling. Just the deep fried pastry, it’s a little snack.

Another go to is Caldo de Cana (sugar cane juice). You can have it as is or mix with some fruit juice. i have mine with lime juice but you can add pineapple, passion fruit, ginger, grape etc.

i’m here today to buy japanese cucumbers because i’ll cook jajangmyeon later this week

Around here we have what’s called a farmer’s market. Very similar vibe and execution really, but it’s usually only one day per week.

But in my neighborhood we have a street where everyone sets up food stands every day, mostly selling Various grilled or fried or steamed foods, but sometimes also fruit or vegetables.

That’s different since it’s just a bunch of street vendors who decided to do that, but it’s nice, so I’m mentioning it! Maybe I’ll get a photo one day.

In America we call them farmer’s markets! Here’s one I go to in downtown Boston, in Copley Square.

We have a pretty active one in my city’s town square park-a-ma-thing every Tuesday/Thursday (I dunno if calling it a town square is correct, because the actual government buildings are three blocks away). The issue is I find it can be kinda expensive. I mean, folks should be paid for their quality wares/work/goods … but I’m broke y’all! :stuck_out_tongue:

We have these here usually twice a week and usually at times when people who work in offices can’t go to them. Like wednesday mornings from 10 to 12. I’m currently a bit more flexible than that. Maybe I should check out my local Wochenmarkt.

We have farmers markets scattered around every day of the week but every Saturday there is a really big one around our Capitol and yesterday was an excellent day to go. Tons of produce in season, tons of beautiful flowers. Usually cheese, eggs, baked goods and then other vendors selling crafts and clothes nearby.

We also have something called street fairs where the street is closed to traffic and theres food trucks random stuff for sale and music. Usually about 1 a week in a different spot all summer

The very strange weather we’ve been having has been both good and bad to the garden this “summer”. Rather than focus on the bad, let’s focus on the good and how our dahlias have really become pretty!

Back to the markets again =)

Approximately 104 days after Brandon posted some sunflowers here is my jumbo corner sunflower!

Other sunflowers in the neighborhood have blossomed some time ago but it took awhile for all of mine to fully open up. This one is probably about 8 feet tall.

Below are some babies. You can see the jumbo in the back
