Outside Kids - the thread where we talk about gardens and nature and stuff

@“hellomrkearns”#p70465 it‘s good that you have more than one - they need to cross-pollinate in order to bear fruit, and they’re not all the same type!

I'd move that one further from the house though.

In other news, we have too many loquats. I'm eating like 10 every other day and I can't god darned keep up! I gotta learn about that loquat wine or something.

good to know! i just cleared a space that would be good for them.

Got out and played some tennis this weekend for the first time in…15 years probably?? Yo tennis is fun! Nice that there are so many public courts around. Did realize I don’t actually know any of the rules of tennis so when I got home I did what any sane person would do to learn…that’s right I loaded up Tennis 2k2 on the Dreamcast.

Planted this sweet basil yesterday[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/od5s0PD.jpeg]

went to church and they had a bunch of dumpstered potted basil plants. we took a few. Ate a couple, and planted the rest in the garden. holding back from posting gratuitous photos from my life of living in backyards, living in the woods, outdoor CRT setups etc. I think I already dropped many of them in my introduction post and various other threads anyways.

I was living in a series of apartments for like four years before I bought my second house last year and, while there‘s a lot of things I don’t like about home ownership (buying a new air conditioner paying to cut down dead trees etc.) I do like having a garden again! This year I direct seeded some arugula because we have a bed that doesn‘t get ideal sunlight and it’s been a big success!

Lots of volunteer tomatoes this year which I'm figuring out if I want to transplant to another bed or a big pot or maybe see if anyone in my neighborhood would want them, but this one fighting it's way out of my compost is my favorite of the lot.

spent a couple days hiking South Manitou Island in Sleeping Bear NP way up in the northern reaches of lake michigan.

interior was mostly beech-maple. A bit too touristy around the dock (at the ranger station) and only a few arrivals seemed to be doing much actual hiking

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/hfmX13w.jpeg]

the island was inhabited in the 19th century into the early 20th but once ships transitioned to coal rather than timber for fuel, there was really no money to be made and it was abandoned. So it was cool/spooky to come across old time village buildings

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/Ctf12KB.jpeg]

View from our campsite at the northern coast. That's N Manitou island with clouds burning off. We got to watch the thunderstorm pass at a safe distance. Weather was great but somewhat windy as that system passed by

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/YC6edTn.jpeg]

went down the beach and spent most of the afternoon relaxing. I tried to stand on a large rock in the shallows to help reach less sandy water to fill up our supply but I slipped and fell in. It's ok I meant to do that

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/9XGPyko.jpeg]

We hiked to the western side of the island the next day. View of a freighter moving through the passage, the mainland portion of Sleeping Bear is in the background

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/uXIb6e3.jpeg]

old shipwreck off the coast. Real Gordon Lightfoot shit

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/ROw9hXu.jpeg]

the lighthouse on the S end of the island was open so we were able to climb to the top. That's the harbor with the dock visible.

[upl-image-preview url=https://i.imgur.com/vXTO9zb.jpeg]

then we took the ferry back to the mainland with the daytrippers. It was fun! I love the North Country

@“yeso”#p79737 awesome dude. that abandoned building has fired my imagination

Grew some mung bean sprouts. they took just 5 days to grow which is cool, they do require being watered every three hours from what i read and watched but there was a couple of times where i forgot to water them and they turned out alright so who knows how often it really is necessary.

i used just 300g of beans and i got almost 2kg of sprouts. wasn't expecting that much to grow. gonna have to eat a lot in the next couple of days.

next time i'm going to try with regular soy beans since they are cheaper

Bog, fen, marsh, or swamp?? Only real gamers will know the answer

@“穴”#p86195 I’ve been sprouting since I was 12. You can eat mung bean sprouts much sooner than that. All sprouts merely require 1 8 hour soak followed by rinsing an average of once per day. The only variation is for denser seeds like garbanzo, or in the case of avocado where it takes months to sprout lol. I recommend sprouting lentils.

@“hellomrkearns”#p93956 damn, that‘s cool as heck!!! I also like how, due to whatever shadow stuff is going on, it looks like the rainbow is kinda coming toward you like a super saiyan explosion or something, lighting whatever’s underneath it.

@“exodus”#p95981 it was one of the best rainbows I've seen. Like that old video said, it was indeed a Double Rainbow.

At my old apartment we had a raised bed planter in the driveway/in front of the garage. We grew tomatoes, herbs, peppers, and a few other things. It wasn‘t massively successful but we got some stuff going. When we moved out, I took all the nice dirt and spread it around the back area and also filled the hole in the very small (a semicircle that’s 12" at its widest) dirt patch by the spigot that you can just barely see there. The hole was made when we dug out the rose bush we had there. Anyway - clearly a tomato seed from our prior harvests planted itself. When I first visited the old apartment a few months ago they had a small tomato plant going and they asked if we had planted it, which is when I put together that it just came from our dirt.

Anyway, I went back there this past weekend and this is what I saw. The tomato plant had just gone bonkers. They didn't water it or take care of it or anything. It just grew like a dang bandit from a seed that came out of some dirt we tossed in there. It rules IMO.

(according to one neighbor friend who lives there still they had the vines all along the ground and weren't dealing with it at all until she badgered them to put some stakes in, which I guess they sorta did. Anyway they moved out now! I wonder what'll happen there. They moved out because of a gas leak that is definitely there, but which the handyman the landlord uses continues to say is not there, and so the landlord will not fix. The leak was there all the 15 years I was living there, I just patched it up so it mostly stayed contained to under the house lol. It's possible they used the heat more than I did which caused the patch to erode. I did the patch because the handyman said there was no leak. He also didn't notice the high pitched whine he had introduced which was happening 24/7. Man that guy sucked. At one point he also accused me of removing a plate from the heating system that would "cause us to die in 24 hours." but uhhh he removed it!! Not me! He did it!! And then blamed me for it! Anyhoo good for the new tenants for not wanting to inhale gas all day.)

Saw this little guy out in the daytime (unusual for hedgehogs). I think the neighbors might have disturbed his sleep with a hedge trimmer.

@“hellomrkearns”#p98069 I wanna make a sonic joke but this little pal is too cute for sonic

@“hellomrkearns”#p98069 why were they trying to give him a trim in his sleep???
