Questions about Discourse and its functions

I use the heart as “I read this” sometimes when I don’t have anything to say but want the author to know people are paying attention. I don’t think it’s too upvote-y since it doesn’t actually change order or anything. The only time I feel weird doing it is when I’m hitting the heart on a difficult or sad post, but then the heart becomes a condolence or acknowledgement from me or something?

I think it’s good as a way to encourage new or less frequent posters to participate I try to be on the lookout for opportunities to do that

What is the character/word count limit of posts on IC/Discourse forums?

I frequently heart stuff that looks like a lot of effort just to say thanks

looks like the default is 150,000 characters. That’s quite a bit! Even tim’s old blogs probably wouldn’t get that long most of the time.

You would think this site was super popular by how often it’s under “extreme load.”

After it took a hiatus, I’m seeing the extreme load notification again

Thanks for letting us know - I’m unaware of anyone else having that issue appear again, myself included so I’m hoping it’s a one off that just happened to be at a time when a lot of people were using the forum (Yay!).

Have you seen it again since? I had a quick look at the traffic two days ago and it wasn’t higher compared to other days.

I’ve only seen it maybe once. However I tend to see it when I might be doing stuff that rate-limits me. Are you opening multiple tabs to have them load in the background?

Discourse is certainly a bit more… assertive about its technical solutions to some of the spam (rate limits, short posts) and cultural (short posts, multiple posts, long posts, sequential posts) than Flarium was, but from an admin side, its more stable and I think the team has tapped down most of the tripping hazards.

Basically none of our spam bots hit the live forum and most of them are caught by automatic tools now which is an improvement in mod workload.

I’m in favor of having the occasional false positive in our forum’s use case rather than having false negatives. Especially since folks have found fun and creative ways to get around some of the short post limits that are still within the spirit of our community!

I didn’t have multiple tabs open, but I did have poor reception, so maybe My phone was sending too many requests or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What’s weird is even though the alert says I should be seeing things like a logged-out user would, everything still looks normal, including notifications and unread count badges on topics.

I can’t tell if it’s a glitch or not but I always have notifications of @connrrr liking my posts :3

Sometimes posts from like 3 years ago, that’s why I’m wondering if the likes from the past are coming back, or are notifications actually live???

why do i have the ability to edit @treefroggy 's post lol

Because the post is set as a wiki!

I removed the wiki settings and you shouldn’t be able to edit it now.

They shouldn’t be older ones, as that was on flarium and the two are not linked for likes - maybe she just really likes your post

I do!! @treefroggy I was just browsing older comments and left likes where the Flarum likes were nuked lol. Sorry for spooking you!!

I read through Tom’s entire test thread, and somehow it’s fascinating.
