yoooooo Machamp is so cool

It’s so good catchers can’t even catch it

Uh, I wouldn’t call that “good” if there is anyone on base, if it’s strike 2 …

Yeah they keep throwing it behind their friends.

We’re coming up once again on sumo time – the September rankings chart came out a day or so ago, and there are some baffling placements on there.

Nishikifuji had a losing 6-9 record at M17 last tournament, and somehow this time is still in the top division at M17. How he didn’t get demoted to Juryo is beyond me, I thought it was essentially guaranteed! Shishi only made it up to J2 with an 11-4 last tournament; I thought he would have had a chance to take that M17 spot.

This is a confusing banzuke. I’m looking forward to the tournament however.

My prediction is that this will be Takakeisho’s last basho. He’ll get a losing record again, and rather than be demoted below Sekiwake he’ll just retire.

Tournament starts on Sunday, September 8.

Watching the Paralympics. They’re broadcasting it on tv here, which they haven’t generally done.

Due to a miscommunication with my wife, we’re now going to a NCAA football game in a couple weeks. Neither of us want to go, it should be a blowout, and it’ll cost us an arm and a leg with the tickets and beers.

Hopefully, whatever shenanigans they pulled with the clock last year is fixed, because I felt like the amount of “No Sport actually being played” was at an all time high.

The Visual impairment category of the para triathlon is incredible.

“Competitors must use a guide of the same gender and nationality throughout the race, and must use a tandem bike, with the guide leading, in the cycling segment.”

Bay FC with some good moves before the transfer window closed. New GK: Jordan Silkowitz. Young and a bit inexperienced but has a good reputation. New center back: Abby Dahlkemper. Legend, transformative, has been incredible for us in the few games she played. New forward: Penelope Hocking. Fast, hungry, exactly the type of player I was hoping we’d get up front. And we’ve had two really convincing wins in a row against Portland and Louisville which moved us up to 7 and solidified our playoff hopes a bit more.

Hard schedule coming up for the rest of the year but team is looking the best they have all year right now.

Also I’m trying to get into baseball. It’s not the best time to get into the sport in the Bay Area(Giants bad, A’s leaving, end of the season) but I am gonna do it. Got tickets to the Giants game this Sunday(Roberto Clemente day <3). I got The Show to learn the game a bit more. I’m sport crazy baby!!!

(also watching a lot of European soccer but nothing too interesting to say there)

amazing

Watched the Giants lose 3-2 but had a good time

Just now watched the Dodgers absolutely crumble giving up 4 runs to the Cubs in the 8th inning. Dodgers are good so wondering they’ll be able to get some dingers.

Think I like baseball.

Baseball’s the best. I’ve been loving the rejuvenated Blue Jays and all the young guys they’ve brought on board. If they can fix their bullpen, they’ll be real fun next season.

Pre-ozeki-promotion Takakeisho was one of my all-time favorites to watch. I don’t know if he visibly changed his approach after getting injured in his first post-promotion tournament, but from that point on, I was a real worrywart for all his bouts. I was either concerned about his health on days when he’d crash into guys he’d usually bulldoze only for them to not retreat an inch, or disappointed when he’d drop winnable bouts via predictable tactics while looking completely cooked after two seconds of physical activity. I believe he’s the best-performing ozeki of at minimum the past decade, numbers- and achievement-wise, so he certainly has a career to be proud of, despite all my handwringing. I would be relieved if he does retire young (he’s still almost two full years away from 30!), though if there’s a world in which he’d take time off to heal and maybe get into more cardio-sensible shape, I’d selfishly be pretty excited to see him trying for that Tochinoshin/Terunofuji-style rise-and-fall-and-rise-again career path.

Although, to be honest, I think the top division is just too stacked for someone with his limited set of skills to make another ozeki run. I don’t know how the sumo fandom at large feels, but it seems to me that there’s an unusual amount of skill parity across most sectors of the top division. For example, even if he were to show up in perfect health and sneak in at the rock bottom of the banzuke, I don’t foresee old Takayasu ever getting that first Emperor’s Cup, which I might’ve thought possible a year or two ago.

My oldest started high school and is a percussionist. What this means is that I get to go to all the football games and watch the game and listen to my kid play drums in the pep band - just like I did 30 years ago. I’m more excited about basketball season because it will be drier and warmer in a gym and we all know that American football isn’t healthy for the players, but its still a hoot.

Day 5 of the September basho is in the books, and we’re far enough in now to have a sole leader, Onosato, at 5-0.

Today ended with a match between Kotozakura (Ozeki) and Oho (M2) and it was, in my opinion, the match of the tournament thus far:

In other news I was just happy to see Hoshoryu look convincing and get another win on the board. Yesterday’s performance against Tobizaru was … lacklustre, to put it mildly.

Recent article about the A’s move to Sacramento. Circus is too kind a word to describe this whole thing.

The Oakland Coliseum has new owners and the hope seems to be that John Fisher will abandon this Sacramento plan and keep the A’s in Oakland(until Vegas stadium is done)with this new private group instead of having to work with the city and county on a deal. I don’t think this’ll happen tbh but guess we’ll see.
