Probably the most shocking transaction in American sports I can recall. A top talent in his prime being traded, seemingly without requesting it himself. Add in just how out of nowhere it is, it’s totally unprecedented.
I hate this kind of thinking, I really do, but my Celtics brain almost wants to claim there’s some unsavory business behind the scenes. Probably just classic stupidity though.
This is certainly They can’t keep getting away with it meme territory with the Lakers after getting so many favorable surprise trades every time they were on the verge of becoming irrelevant.
My early take is the Lakers made out like gangsters by getting a five years younger superstar, and making Lebron way less necessary / politically influent on the organization. They are probably weaker overall this year (their defense got seriously downgraded) but it is the perfect immediate rebuild for the years to come, provided Luka stays there.
Totally, I don’t know if I see the Lakers becoming a threat now, or even in the near-medium future, but it basically buys them guaranteed relevance for the next decade. Although I guess there have been maybe 3 years in my entire life in which that wasn’t the case, so that’s nothing new.
Now to watch the Simmons pod at a very timely 3AM here. Luckily Arsenal have a late kick off tomorrow today.
Definitely the most shocking sports trade I can recall in my lifetime. Usually you at least have a sense that a guy might get moved but nope, and they got absolutely hosed in the trade too. They could’ve gotten a ton of picks for him at least if they absolutely had to trade him but instead they somehow traded their best player they’ve developed in a generation (who was on track to be the best player in franchise history) for a risky win-now move to set up the damn Lakers for another decade.
Seriously though. The scuttlebutt coming out about NO ONE on either side being aware of this trade is bonkers. It just has this shady, back alley feel to it. Especially now that the owners have come out and said that it all started over a laugh and then decided “hey, fuck it”
On a side note, one of my employees is a huge Mavs fan and he isn’t even upset. He wants to see Luka win a ring. He also loves the big defensive boost for the Mavs. AD, combined with Lively, could really change up the kind of team they are going forward. Assuming both of the guys stay healthy in the near term.
I honestly think AD has a lot more to give. He gets a bad rep (which I have participated in) but he really is still playing at quite a high level when he’s healthy. I hope we see the kind of boost from him like we saw from both Kyrie and Klay upon arriving in Dallas
My wife is a big Red Sox fan and for the longest time I’ve thought that them trading Mookie was the dumbest move I’d ever seen (we still refer to him in this house as “Former Red Sock Mookie Betts”
This is just on another level—but still, an LA team
And the Dodgers got Roki too! I don’t want to hear a peep from LA sports fans for like a decade hahah
The Spurs got De’Aaron Fox for Wemby without even needing to backstab @yeso 's Polish kid in the process. You people can’t pay for eggs and bare necessities anymore but talented NBA players are surprisingly good value under this new administration.
The Kings got out of this budding De’Aaron Fox mess relatively well (especially in direct contrast to the Dallas fleecing) by getting Zach LaVine from the Bulls in the process, but once again Chicago’s ownership went for the cheapest, lamest move possible. When was the last time Chicago had a good time as a sports city? The Cubs’ title in 2016?
Can’t believe he’s been reunited with DeMar DeRozan. Are either of them happy that this is happening? The Kings are such an eternally mysterious organization. I have so many questions for you about what it’s like being a fan.
i thought zach and derozan played well together in chicago and i hope that means Zach will be motivated. derozan looks pretty old this year :(
my dad was a kings fan and would tell me the nba is rigged as far back as i remember. that turned out to be verifiably true in 2002 when i was 11. i learned to love basketball for individual plays and kooky characters. let go of winning a long time ago
when kings fans speak optimistically i try to be nice but theres no reason to ever expect anything from the franchise. do the colors make the the most insert credit nba team?
I’m a Knicks fan but the CP3 mentorship program in San Antonio + the budding beautiful chemistry between Wemby & Sochan have been my favorite stories to watch this season. I like Fox a lot & I hope he can add to the vibes & help that squad grow into a fun, but real contender.
@boogienight colors for sure, I also think lighting the beam is very insert credit. the sabonis/fox & boogie/IT combos had classic 7/10 insert credit game vibes.
really was an bold move by fox. how many stars on bad teams must be kicking themselves for not taking the leap? he gave up a lot of money too. obviously im unhappy about it but kings fans are always unhappy.
kings fans adopt other teams because we still want to watch the nba. been on the spurs bandwagon since 2005. manus my favorite player of all time
