Real life sports

The situation is getting pretty dire so a lot of people are going for a VPN nowadays. A good example for football/soccer is the Champions League which is broadcast for free on public Belgian TV.

Many apps will also change what you can access depending on your region of access. You could access pretty much any competition from a legit DAZN account as long as you switch from which “country” your VPN says you are currently accessing the app. I guess DAZN doesn’t mind either.

I have a friend in Germany for whom the subscription to his VPN + the subscription to his Egyptian (!) premium sports app cost him less in a year than legit subscriptions to the German service providing Bundesliga games + the German service providing Champions League would monthly.

I am much in favor of being as legit as possible, for those those can afford it, especially with games and entertainment in general: these are all luxuries, not necessities of life, some of the money goes back to the people producing these contents, and some of the legit money goes towards local taxes. But it is very hard convincing people to go legit with such wild discrepancies.

i pay for F1 TV since i had a friend of mine buy it through their roku device and it’s way cheaper to get a pro subscription through that. there are discord servers and subreddits that can supplement that need if you’d rather not cough up the cash

Apparently the cubs and the dodgers are playing a couple games in Japan (and the cubs themselves are playing separate exhibition games against the Hanshin Tigers and Yomiuri Giants (?)). We landed in japan today and I guess it was right around the time the dodgers were supposed to land. When my wife and I walked out of the customs gate there were THRONGS of people waiting for Ohtani. It felt like I was in the Beatles. Then they just made a little path for us to walk through lol.

That’s so cool. My favorite team is the Cardinals and we have Lars Nootbaar who played for Team Japan in 2023 and he said that because of Ohtani they had to take the prime minister’s secret tunnels to get around the city discreetly

I did not stay to see if he ever arrived but my wife and I both agreed it’d be weird if they just made him go through regular customs like us common folk

I guess I should share for the endurance racing fans, at the start of the year I developed this tool to simulate basic telemetry for endurance races.

I’ve been updating it fairly regularly, it contains data for races in WEC, IMSA and ELMS. It currently only goes back to 2023 as older car images are harder to source. If you like any of these series and watch the replays (usually free on youtube) I think its pretty handy for that!

On the subject of games and sports jerseys, nothing will ever be sadder to me in my sporting life than Arsenal of all clubs being the one to get the dreamcast kit

i was so mad back in the day and y’know, i’m still mad now

Promotion and relegation is coming to US soccer via the USL!

The USL has been talking about this for a while, nice to see that there’s a commitment to implementing it now. I’m curious about what’s going to happen when they introduce their new league, are they just going to take some teams already in their other leagues and automatically promote them? New teams? It’ll be interesting.

Paging @Jax to defend his club’s honour.

Saint-Etienne did a dreamcast one, there’s a J-league team JEF had a bunch of good SEGA shirts, and also tottenham had a SEGA one for a little while don’t know if that helps

Capcom sponsors Cerezo Osaka and they’ve had a variety of different kits that highlight that

Defend? The proof is in the proverbial pudding. Only a select few brave clubs fought for the correct future of video games, and now we’re living in a reality with a decidedly video game box-less Sega. It should be everyone else on trial!

(Stalking @GameBeginnerGirl’s posts in this thread to find some sort of club affiliation, only to have my worst suspicions confirmed)

I can find no evidence that the likes of Ledley King or Teddy Sheringham have ever used a Sega Dreamcast. Whereas we can extrapolate from my avatar that Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp have likely explored vast swathes of the Dreamcast catalogue, with Arsène Wenger probably giving them recommendations on Japanese imports.

believe me when i say the intersection of sega and football is well trodden territory for me :innocent:

the spurs ones were only for youth/reserve teams where we couldn’t use the main sponsor–they’re almost impossible to get

i own a 94’ JEF Ichihara kit i got from a secondhand shop of all places in Yotsukaido in the late 2000s and those St. Etienne ones are ugly as sin
