These are absolutely crazy and makes me jealous of Anbernic folks (I dropped my anbernic device out of my car and it shattered.) it is like the entire wishlist of games I want on one of these that seems achievable.
Sonic mania, and void stranger in particular man… and they got plumbers don’t wear ties.
I got a Miyoo Mini Plus last month and I’ve been pretty happy with it. I got it in part because I’ve been tooling around in GB Studio and I wanted a device that at least felt a little bit like a Game Boy in the hands. Grabbed a bunch of overlays that made everything look super crisp.
But after seeing all the Portmaster developments, I keep thinking maybe it wouldn’t hurt to grab one of the 35XX’s too… I saw some folk using the 35XX H in TATE mode for arcade stuff and that’s so great.
It looks like a fix for this was engineered by the author of the GammaOS CFW about a week ago and is slowly making its way into all the custom firmware updates.
Getting a buddy of mine set up with an RG35XX H for his birthday. Excited because tinkering’s so satisfying - getting all the right overlays and settings ready so it’s great out of the box.
Hoping to make it a pretty seamless, easy experience for him. From what I’ve read it seems like MuOS is the way to go? I was also hoping for an EmulationStation style screensaver/attract mode but it seems like that’s just on Knulli, which sounds like it’s got some issues.
Knulli/Batocera is what I have on mine and it’s generally fine. If your buddy is a normal human, they will have a great time. If they are a futzer like I am they will find that there are some funny glitches with save states sometimes.
It’ll be a delightful gift! I’ve given a few and they are always appreciated.
I just gave my bestie one of those! Loaded it up with Batocera and some difficult Pokemon ROMs for his flight to France and back soon.
Also I tried to finesse a decent-looking theme on it, which was harder than I expected. The ones I like on my TV PC don’t translate well to the small screen! Was your experience any easier?
Enabling a theme was super easy - I just used one of the ones in Batocera. Don’t remember which one, and I felt like from a usability perspective it was fine.
Next I connected to the WiFi and the settings on “auto” and used one of the scrapers that don’t require a login. It may not catch romhacks unless someone had submitted it or you override the name. That got box art for most of them. I don’t have it run attract mode - too slow and heavy for me.
Finally, I don’t use any filters/shaders overlays. I corrected the aspect ratio as an override for the GBA and PSP but let everything else default. I’m a middle-aged dude with glasses and don’t need to make it harder to see under any circumstances!
I have a Mini + and while I haven’t played loads of PSX roms on it, everything I have thrown at it has run very well. I may actually have some time this evening so I can run a test or two and let you know.
It’s a great little machine which aside from the slightly than my big hands like form factor, is really worth if for gaming on the go.
Works absolutely perfectly with the image provided. Didn’t see any slow down in performence, and was able to test it thanks to the clock on the screen (That’s a freebie!). I’m using onion OS so it runs PCSX-ReARMed in RetroArch as the default PS1 emulator, which I’ve used before on various Retropie set ups and works very well.
Only one thing I’d say is if you can, find a CHD creator and compress the file down. PCSX-ReARMed runs CHD files so you can save a lot of space and usually get them down to at least half the size, sometimes even more. This way, more great games ;)
Buyer beware on a Linux based PS2 handheld as many of the readily available ones are going to be Android. Many of the ones I’ve seen in Linux go up to usually Dreamcast/PSP. I’ve been out of the market since my RP4+ though.
Getting good insight into the Mini+'s ability to run this, thank you!! If someone wanted something even more pocketable would the regular Mini be p much the same experience as the Plus?
The Plus has a few more nicer features on it (aside from the obvious size meaning bigger screen):
Wi-Fi
Faster RAM
Larger battery
The main thing for me was form factor. I played a Mini and found it almost painful as it’s just too small for me. The Plus isn’t a huge step up, but it’s a lot more ergonomic and allows for longer play times. Should buttons are mounted better as well, feel easier to get to as having two on each trigger on the Mini is really tight. If the first few things I mentioned don’t bother you at all, then it’s all down to size really. If you want smaller then you won’t be upset.
Someone I follow on youtube, Retro Game Corps, has an amazing review on the Mini Plus including comparisons of other handhelds you may have held: (And many more other great videos): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfclsJzeyr0
Worth a watch to give you some really feedback on how it feels, which is important when you can’t hold the thing.
We need to get this guy on the show or on the forums. I love his work. He has been responsible for selling me several handhelds.
@穴 if you specifically want to play a MAME version of Tetris Grand Master a Miyoo/Ambernic will be fine. The arcade system it runs on is less complex than the PS1, and the Miyoo/Ambernics all run PS1 great. Physical form factor and price are really your key features.
If you want something that runs PSP well, you need to spend more money and get a bigger screen and at that point, you may as well have a Switch or Steamdeck.
I like the android emulation handhelds because they are so inexpensive and can play so much.
