@“kory”#p104788 Yessss do it! Emma is incredible and one of the best archaeogaming researchers out there. She‘s an expert in Japanese archaeology, and so far as I know the only one that’s gotten into looking at games. Most active archaeogaming nerds are Americanists (like me) or Classicists. That‘s why you see 800,000 pieces about Hades or Assassin’s Creed and nowhere near as many about stuff like this.

Realizing this happened yesterday. I'm hoping they put up a recording of it. If I see it or if @kory does first, maybe we can get it up here.

@“fridgeboy”#p104939 Thankfully I was able to attend the lecture (I think @JJSignal made it as well!). This was a really fascinating and methodical undertaking, in which she compiled hundreds of popular culture references to Jomon Period iconography and broke down the data chronologically and by media genre. It was even more granular than that, noting various characteristics of each example, such as gender coding, mechanical vs. organic nature, alien vs. terrestrial origin, etc. I think the most interesting takeaway for me was that video game representations account for the lion‘s share of the recent swell in popularity of this imagery. In fact, she asserted that the appearances throughout the SMT franchise, specifically, seem to account for much of the prominence in popular culture (as well as the attachment of the name “Arahabaki” with the Dogū statues). I reached out to The Archaeology Centre to see if there’s a recording–here's hoping!

My opinion will be changed entirely if that speaker on the floor is playing **waka-waka-waka-waka-waka-waka-waka-waka-waka-waka** Pac-Man sound effects.
