Shmups/STGs/Shoot 'em ups

@TracyDMcGrath I stand corrected, maybe not the best. Things sure have changed there since I was regularly posting, I guess. That’s a shame

I think system11 went off the deep end at some point and I mostly blame them. Whenever this comes up on Twitter people say they‘ve tried to report stuff and nothing happens. The bullshit there is mostly limited to off topic threads I guess but it’s hard to look past when twitter exists and most of the good folks on the forum are more active there now anyway

Looks like City Connection and co will at least try to fix the Saturn ports:

And on a related note:

You guys should visit the What's the (obscure!) game?! page. I bet you can figure it out! (I solved the last one so I can't guess)

I‘m at an absolute loss on it. I know I’ve seen it but can't for the life of me remember where

Like I recognize both the dude and the character and I'm still at a loss haha

Edit: guessed anyway

Character voice or not, what a strange world we live in where an internet forum about tiny pixelated space ships dodging tiny pixelated lasers becomes a forum for racist conspiracy.

Oh shoot, I didn't make the (City) connection between the Saturn Tributes and Death Smiles. I'd reckon the Tributes issues are largely due to Saturn emulation, but I've lost enough trust to wait and see on Death Smiles now for sure.

Like I said, I'm _really_ not sensitive to this stuff at all. But 11 frames of input lag -- for a shmup no less -- isn't an acceptable product.

@tokucowboy yeah the City Connection/ZeroDiv Psikyo ports have a lot of additional lag and I know that from watching slow motion comparison videos and from me being a lot worse at them on the Switch than on MAME, but it’s not a super noticeable thing in the moment. These Saturn ports on the other hand definitely cross that threshold are just super sluggish :frowning:

@TracyDMcGrath Kinda can’t believe I actually knew one for the first time ever!

Oh yay, Gleylancer is coming to Switch! Oh no, my games queue is getting even bigger…

@Karasu Oh yay, Gleylancer is coming to Switch! Oh no, my games queue is getting even bigger…

I was, perhaps unfairly, extremely dubious of this last minute low key low price announcement but Bullet Heaven just published a glowing review! Huh!

@chazumaru It‘s pretty exciting! I had little to no expectation either, so it’s good to hear it’s well done.

Gleylancer is one of those games from the 90’s that were all over games magazines in the 90’s but way too expensive to import (for me) at the time, and then by the time imports were easier to find, it had skyrocketed in price. Hopefully there will be some more completely unexpected releases of relatively obscure shooters em ups from the folks that published this one?

The dev behind Grey Lancer is the same as the Cho Aniki series no? Or at least the first few

Yes! Masaya is one of those extremely prolific devs from those days. I think they also did Assault Suit Valken/Cybernator for SNES?

The Gleylancer release is really exceptional, it‘s outstanding. At least on the eShop, there’s an introductory sale where it‘s only $5.59 (normally just $6.99 anyways), & it’s very, very well done. You get a complete new translation, full button mapping options (it‘s actually fun to play it as a sort of twin-stick shooter, moving with the d-pad & shooting with the right stick – a thing you can do now), “modern” & original modes, a smooth rewind, save states & some of the most in-depth scanline options I’ve seen in a console re-release of a vintage game. This goes harder than some M2 releases & is cheap as chips.

Seeing relatively scant details (from the Retronauts retro roundup for this past week) that rRootage is on Switch! …But only in Europe and Australia as of this moment! Fingers crossed that it will make it to North America. They also note that Kenta Cho has been super busy lately… wow. I am not even sure where to begin with all of these.

Always nice to know people actually read that thing!

Barring any last-minute issues, it'll be out this week in North America and possibly Japan as well.

@gsk For what it‘s worth, I visit the Retronauts blog precisely once a week, every Friday, exclusively to read the Retro Re-Release Roundup. I’ve learned so much from it. Thank you for the work you do there.

first gleylancer, now gynoug?

we feastin’

Adding onto everything else: the EU eShop briefly listed both Panorama Cotton and Cotton 100% with October 29 release dates, which would put them just a day behind Kyuukyoku Tiger Heli (M2‘s first Toaplan collection, out in Japan for PS4+Switch) and Abarenbou Tengu & Zombie Nation (City Connection’s Famicom/NES two-pack, out worldwide for PC+Switch).

@whatsarobot Much appreciated! FWIW I do /try/ to reply to comments, but it’s a coin-flip as to whether Disqus will or won’t post my replies, idk what’s up with that.
