Got popcorn and heavies done, still working on balance. Might have time to get a boss working, we’ll see.
@TracyDMcGrath Very awesome! It’s looking great!
I wish I could share my prototype, but I sadly haven’t had a chance to work on it at all D:
@Karasu I wish I could schedule gamejams haha. They’re always on hilariously inconvenient weeks
Got bombs working
@TracyDMcGrath Oooooh, I like those numbers poppin off, very satisfying
And a Dariusburst Chronicle EX+ update: gsk was right as always, and there are a lot more modes than I gave it credit for. However, the description of each mode is real bad and I never really know what I’m jumping into – I just pick a mode and play Darius. Some nice reprisals of classic Zuntata tunes in those modes, though, and I forgot to mention a cool Switch thing that I rarely think about: the HD rumble in this is actually pretty neat, and does a good job of giving you that arcade Darius shake
As the next step of my SEGA SUMMER, perhaps with some degree of influence from this thread or perhaps not, I‘ve recently been playing Darius Gaiden on the Sega Saturn. I’ll just come right out and say it: this game owns!! I had never played a Darius game before and am fascinated not only with the spectacle of the fish theming, but also just how much diversity they‘re able to squeeze out of it. My personal favorite boss I’ve seen so far is Folding Fan, whose design is not only outstanding but also uses bullet patterns that exclusively move in fan-shaped formations (and there‘s some good variety in how that’s achieved, just for one boss!!). Though of course, that is only my favorite boss “that I've seen” - the branching path structure of this is at once impressive and intimidating. There is a whole heck of a lot of game to bite into here. The good news is I‘ve yet to stumble across any levels which I haven’t enjoyed sinking my teeth into. What an abundantly generous delight of a game. I‘m on a fast track to picking up those versions on the Switch you guys are talking about here, I can’t imagine getting tired of a game like this any time soon.
Darius is a heck of a thing and Gaiden is a heck of a Darius. It's hard to think of better games
I love Darius Gaiden, that's actually the first STG I 1CCed!
I used to play it on the Taito Legends ps2 compilation that I sold you @Funbil
@穴 Oh shoot!! I saw a Darius on there, didn‘t realize it was Gaiden (though unfortunately, for the sake of SEGA SUMMER, I must stay committed to the Saturn version…). It’ll be reeeaaallll good to pop this thing on an actual CRT though, once I’m allowed to play non-SEGA consoles again
@TracyDMcGrath This is great! I love the nun theming (thinking of that nun in Gigawing – are there other shmup nuns? It‘s on the tip of my brain, I want this to be a theme) & the scoring system is incredibly addictive. Was that system inspired by anything or just something you came up with? It’s very satisfying & enticing to chase after the increasing numbers as they pop off, & using the bomb on one of the larger enemies to produce a whole explosion of big numbers is motivating
@tokucowboy the scoring system is based off Raizing games naturally, but the medal spawning is much more frequent and I tried to make it harder to get the chains too high to incentivize “cashing out” with a bomb once you’ve got a high enough chain.
@TracyDMcGrath Ah, I think Batrider & 1944: The Loop Master are the only Raizing shmups I’ve really played. Seeing the scoring system visualized so clearly in the numbers & making fetching the numbers such an integral part of the game makes it feel unique to me. And I think your plan worked as far as cashing out goes, too
@tokucowboy i think the only place I‘ve seen the Raizing medal chaining logic fully explained was an ms paint drawing that was jpeg copied to oblivion on the shmup forum, so I’m hoping that this is at least clearer if not significantly different haha
I played Galactic Attack on the Sega Saturn a week or two ago and had a pretty good time. Have you ever played that one? How do they compare?
M2. IS. PORTING. THE. RAY. FORCE. TRILOGY.
Going through Family Computer Vertical Shmups in chronological order is interesting. You have STAR FORCE, STAR SOLDIER, ALPHA MISSION, ZANAC AI, ARMORED SCRUM OBJECT, all released within a year of eachother pretty much, and very easy to get them all mixed up.
If anyone here has never tried Pixel Amaya’s pc freeware shooter GUXT, take a look. It’s from around the same time as cave story.
I made this remix of the stage 1 theme in middle school in 2007 using PXTONE.
Also Toby Fox’s avatar on starmen.net was always a GUXT boss, definitely a low key influence on his work no one talks about ;)
@TracyDMcGrath extremely here for this!!
@TracyDMcGrath of course it‘s occurring to me that given it’s getting a Darius Cozmik Collection sort of release, it will probably be priced at roughly $900 (and I’ll buy it anyway of course).
