Right, I don’t think people would jump to Sony, Bandai and Tecmo as the RPG powerhouses of the PlayStation era besides Square, but they were kinda more mainstream in North America than Enix and Atlus!
I find the sales of Sony’s Legend of Dragoon and Legaia especially impressive.
For another frame of reference, here are apparently all(?) the PlayStation games that outsold FF7 in the USA.
Gran Turismo – 3,251,557
Crash Bandicoot 2 – 3,100,190
Gran Turismo 2 – 3,056,883
Crash Bandicoot: Warped – 3,006,691

Spyro the Dragon – 2,726,288
Tekken 3 – 2,681,372
Tony Hawk: Pro Skater 2 – 2,628,911
Tony Hawk: Pro Skater – 2,513,441
And here is the same for the Nintendo 64 in the USA.

This has nothing to do with Squaresoft:
It’s funny in hindsight how the N64 is pretty much the Xbox of its generation. Many N64 games had more than half of their worldwide sales in the US, and the N64 itself is “only” 〜10 million units below the PS1, whereas the PS1 dwarves the N64 worldwide due to Japan and Europe. Star Fox 64’s sales in the US (2.39 Million units) are just below FF7, for instance. It’s also the console with the big FPS of its generation (GoldenEye 007) and where sports games overperformed. Microsoft was wise to bet on Halo and four controller ports for the Xbox.
