software that just works

My google maps updated so its back to mapquest for me now.

What podcast apps do you guys use on Android? With Google Podcasts ending and doing a hard push to Youtube Music (which I'm sure is a cesspool of ads) is there a good lightweight podcast player? Just need something that lets me download to my phone and will mark as played.

Otherwise I might have to start burning CD-Rs to listen to the latest Insert Credit episodes on my discman.

@“tombo”#p108010 do you use powertoys for windows? I tried everything in the past but found the search indexing made it even more frustrating to eject removeable disks. the powertoys alt+spacebar search feature combined with windows start menu and explorer search tends to do everything I need. but it is true, those first few months I used Everything search were kind of nice. I‘ve also found that search is better after upgrading to windows 11. (oops I haven’t read this thread before and now see your post is from march of last year, my bad)

well in the spirit of the thread:
I recently installed windows 11 from a custom ISO I made. This Windows 10 PC was when I really got my hands dirty customizing my windows OS, now I'm a pro. I upgraded to win11 with lots of the junk stripped out, customized it fully to my liking, and I'm very pleased.

My dad is a huge macintosh man, he had the apple II in the 80's. his parents got it for free because they were teachers and they never touched it. he got new macs in 1999. He hates windows. We butt heads a lot and make fun of each other constantly.
I did use macs quite a bit after I moved to LA when I was 15. So I'm quite familiar.

Main reasons I use PC is because a) PC gaming and b) I do so much with ROMs, flashcarts, mods, etc. over a wide range of consoles and while there are often tools for mac or linux, there often isn't. so I just go with PC for that! Besides, I can have multiple computers....

I'll share my softo later

@“Tradegood”#p148754 What podcast apps do you guys use on Android?

[Podcast Addict ](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bambuna.podcastaddict&hl=en&gl=US)- The free version has ads, but I paid for it a long time ago.

i was recently blown away by croc, a command line utility that lets you send files between computers. you run </s>croc send <filename><e> and then it will give you an easy-to-remember random code, you run </s>croc <code><e> on the destination machine and it literally just works. i have used this to send large files to friends, and i recently used it to transfer all my ROMs from my computer to a new arcade machine build my friend did without having to use an external hard drive or USB stick or a cloud service or any of that crap. there's also magic-wormhole which does exactly the same thing and was easier for me to install because i already had python/pip on my computer.

@“treefroggy”#p148757 I use Everything for the local drives and those that generally stay plugged in, and regular Windows search if I suspect something is on an portable drive. I keep my files pretty organised so I generally know what drive something is likely to be on.

I also did a custom install of Windows 11 recently, however I fucked up in removing all apps. I thought I would be able to install them if I needed them afterwards but no, something about how I set it up means no apps can be opened or installed, which means no calculator, notes or weather apps. it's not the end of the world, definitely not worth doing another clean install to fix it, but it was annoying. other than that, it's pretty nice. I do use Powertoys and Winaero Tweaker to customise how it looks and works to my liking (minimal, closer to the look and functionality of like Windows 7).

Just browsing the images and videos in a directory on the computer should be as easy as channel surfing, no "media library" or database of metadata, just show me my files instantly and that's what this is. It's what macOS Quick Look should be if it weren't limited to like three file types.

@“rejj”#p107187 Paprika Recipe Manager

I know this post is old but I recently switched from Paprika to [Mela ](https://mela.recipes), which has all the features I already use (saving recipes, meal planning, groceries) with the added bonus of: easier sharing within our household, scanning of recipes from photos and using the camera on a cookbook, rss subscriptions to recipe blogs which pull out the recipes for you, and it syncs groceries with reminders and your meals to your calendar (if you want).

Part of what precipitated the switch was I'd been wanting to use my recipes on my laptop and Paprika is a $40 purchase here. For comparison, Mela has a one time unlock for Mac and another for iOS, all totally under $20. It does have the limitation of not having a PC or Android version so that is a downside if you want those.

@“coffeentacos”#p149740 Wooow — This is great. I just downloaded and added a few recipes. Excited to try this out a bit more. Thanks for the rec!

@“safety_lite”#p149749 You bet!

The recipe scanner works _really_ well imo. Been a game changer for us since we meal plan in app, so having to pull out cookbooks doesn't happen that often. Having them in there, even if it's just the ingredients makes a big difference.

@“coffeentacos”#p149758 Yea, this is so thoughtfully designed. I love it!

I also really like how there's a built in adjustment slider for portions — it automatically scales ingredients!

@“coffeentacos”#p149740 Nice, that looks pretty cool.

I'm all the way bought in (both monetarily as well as habit-forming) with Paprika, but it is good to see other decent options in this space.

I've bought three different versions of Paprika (ios, macos, windows) which does not come out cheap - but I use it every day and I highly value having access to it no matter which device or computer I happen to be using at the time.

@connrrr i knew you'd beat me to it

i'm so pleased

Blackmagic’s iphone video camera app is pretty good even on my 2nd gen SE! Free. My fav part is you can record to network drive if you mapped it in files browser. 4k 60fps records fine over wifi.

I regret to have to admit that I have finally abandoned iTunes. I got a new computer and Sonoma requires disabling system integrity before you can install 12.9.5 which I was not comfortable doing. But migrating my library to the Music app was painless and I always had an issue in iTunes with Retroactive where syncing the iPod would wipe all the favourite markers I’d left on all my songs, which actually bums me out a lot because faving is how I get to know my albums. Now I have to listen to my music all over again!!

Music.app isn’t without its weirdo bugs and has shed virtually all of classic iTunes’s character but it’s a lot more usable on this machine than it was on my old and busted Intel ones, and syncing from the Finder is a little more convenient.

It had a good run…

and lol, I keep meaning to amend my post to say Retroactive’s implementation of iTunes 10.4 is not “software that just works”: it does work inasmuch as it plays music but changing any preferences crashes the program—preferences including things like changing the filetype for ripped songs. I would worry that syncing an iPod would make it freak out! In any case I feel less alone in giving up on iTunes. Does Music work with your classic Pod?

Music seems to work just fine! Podcasts too, only I’m having trouble getting the app to automatically download the latest ten episodes of all my shows, but whatever’s downloaded syncs no problem. I had no idea macOS still supported these old things but it makes sense if you think the iPod Classic was only discontinued not even ten years ago and the iPod Touch not even two.

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed desktop operating system macOS XIV?
