Tell me anything

Learned some Chinese internet slang. “sb”

Someone on Discord added me, I’d soon learn that they did so “accidentally” by typing in the wrong username (yeah, sure, must have been all those other people with nishnaabemowin usernames) and asking me if I also played “IK.”

After they apologized for disturbing me, they then proceeded to tell me that they were 25 years old and they lived in Hong Kong. I should also point out here that their username was “Erin” and their profile pic was an anime girl.

After I told them I was 79 years old and from Beardmore, they then said my country must be beautiful. I told them it was a shithole but we made do. They then tried to bring the conversation back around to “IK,” all but prompting me to ask them what it was with a big shiny glowing red sign.

I was already pretty sure it was some kind of scam, and they probably led with referring to the game with just an acronym instead of the name as some kind of subtle marketing tactic to make the game seem more important or prominent than it is by suggesting to you, the intended mark, that the game is such a big deal that strangers refer to it as just an acronym, since they’re talking about it so much or it is so well known, and so triggering FOMO.

I was actually somewhat surprised to learn that this game was not a crypto game, and just some schlocky mobile game with predatory microtransactions. I will also not be saying what game it was, but you can probably guess in less then 3 guesses what IK stands for.

Anyway I then proceeded to ask them if they thought the founder of the development studio that produced the game, æž—ć„‡, was actually poisoned, which is the only interesting thing I found on the studio’s wikipedia page. I then concluded that it must be legit because his poisoner was sentenced to death in 2024. This overall just confused them because they hadn’t heard about it.

I then admitted to them that I knew what they were doing, and that I knew they were probably someone not being paid very much to pretend to be a girl for viral marketing of this crappy game, and that it wasn’t going to work. They seemed to have added me from the Factorio discord, and so I also tried to tell them they weren’t going to find a whole lot of people who play Factorio that also want to play IK. And I even admitted that I’m not from Beardmore. They then said “sb,” and then also seemed to realize I wouldn’t know what that meant, and so clarified by sending the Chinese characters that it is short for, which is ć‚»é€Œ, which means “Idiot” and is apparently a harsh insult.

I asked them if they were even actually a woman but then they blocked me.

Are we talking “jazz” gummies?

Well a supply of gummies being unlimited I think does imply it’s not limited in that way

Just heard “YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!” coming out the PentaStation and I was very confused that someone was playing Crazy Taxi without me knowing about it. Turns out my son is playing some “Riders Republic” Ubisoft game and they have apparently licensed that song.

I had a massage and then on a spur of the moment decision I also went for a sauna. I would greatly recommend both of these activities, in isolation but also especially in sequence, as often as one can do them

12 days later it occurs to me that “hot protein shake” sounds like a euphemism.

yesterday someone phoned me at 9am as i was leaving my house to travel 30 mins across town. “hello we actually wanted you here an hour earlier than the agreed time so can you go back in time and be here like 30 mins ago.”
and then, a couple of hours later, someone else phoned and basically said the same thing! “hi i’ve had a cancellation so can you be here now two hours earlier than we agreed so i can go home early.” what’s with people!?

last night i found a salamander that had wandered into a building. it was so tangled with hair that had stuck to it that it struggled to walk, and it was so covered in dust that its feet would slide across the floor anyway. a couple weeks ago i found a dried up salamander on a stairwell, in a similar condition.

Summary

i was able to rinse off all the dust and peel off the hair, and i put it outside. i was glad to see no sign of it an hour later. highlight of my week.

there was an eclipse. my phone wouldn’t take a decent picture, but my wife’s could.

I’m up late because some stuff went haywire at work I had to fix. And I learned there was a PC Engine Mini released and I just impulse bought a Buy Now on eBay that was at a very fair price. I’m quite excited to just have a little box to plug in and play a bunch of games I haven’t before. PC Engine feels like an alternate history or timeline to me. Really fascinating.

I’ve spent the past few days messing around with emulation for the PC Engine and some other consoles and am quite frustrated by it all. Finding BIOS, where the various front-ends want the files, the Select button opening RetroArch no matter what I configure, and various fighting of gamepad compatibility. I always thought the Mini consoles were sort of gimmicky—why not just emulate them?

Well, I’ve come around on the idea. I’m here for a curated set of games that hopefully just work. Plug it into a monitor or TV and play. That’s what I want. I’m less interested in messing around with software these days for some reason. It’s the equivalent of PC game graphics settings. Great for tinkering. But time consuming and requires a level of interest.

After the impulse purchase, I learned about the Analogue Duo, which is in stock for about a US$100 more than what I paid for the Mini. But I’m not sure I want to collect physical PC Engine games, they seem a bit pricy. And getting it to play ROMs falls into the hassle category.

I hope the PC Engine Mini doesn’t stink. I didn’t read any reviews beforehand lol. It’s cool that it has games from various regions.

The novelty of the PC Engine is appealing. I didn’t grow up with one. I love shmups. I love the way the games look from what I’ve played. So here’s to just going for it in response to working some overtime.

I’m no hero but I discovered overpriced tech wear capes during quarantine and decided I want to learn how to stitch a techno cape. I think it’s just a black poncho with zippers and pockets made of sail cloth.

I want to look dope and make others look dope.
