The 2025 Video Game News Thread (I was forced by anti-innovation communists to change the title again)

Both this and Blue Prince look like complete bangers for this month.
Also, Hundred Line, but for personal reasons.

We finally have news about the new Age of Empires 2 expansion and there’s some drama about it including the Three Kingdoms period. I guess it’s supposed to be a game about medieval history so I understand the complaints, but I’m just here for the RTS gameplay lol.

Also, one of the most popular civs since AoC in 2000 has been the Huns, and Atilla the Hun was doing his thing in the mid-5th century. Going back to the 3rd century isn’t too much of a stretch.

Tired: wondering if Mario is a Republican.

Wired: noticing that Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road was first announced at the eve of Trump’s first presidency, before the first Nintendo Switch was even announced, somehow skipped the entire Biden administration, and will finally release at the beginning of Trump’s second presidency, after the Nintendo Switch 2’s release. I am just asking questions.

For comparison’s sake, Parisian studio Sloclap released three games in between the announcement and release of the new Inazuma: Absolver (2017), Sifu (2022) and Rematch (19 June 2025).

I didn’t know they announced it that long ago, I only remember the first time they showed it in that big presentation with the Holy Horror mansion reveal

Lunacid follow-up is out and….free to play?!

I don’t think I can support a thread of its own until it actually launches, but I watched some of yesterday’s hype event for the new Bungie-developed Marathon and they totally got me.

I haven’t played a Destiny or Tarkov but I’m pretty interested in this one. And the graphic design and art directly looks completely hot to death.

I’ve never played a shooter where there are independent goals like this. I play the Infinity tabletop minis game and that has a similar vibe. Yeah you shoot the other player, but that’s in service of pushing the buttons and doing the things you have to do on your cards rather than just murdering: unless you get an assassination card.

So as an old person, I’m weak to the IP, I’m ready to have something to play with my friends that isn’t Marvel, and I’m hoping that after Concord this isn’t going to be permitted to fail.

See you all in September.

would assume Bungie has this type of game figured out so that unlike Tarkov it’s possible for people not on amphetamines to play for more that 3 seconds before getting killed

Even if it isn’t, it would be thematically appropriate because enhancing yourself with future space clone drugs are way cooler than debasing yourself with today’s earth PMC drugs.

the writeup on pcgamer described the design as being especially strident and unforgiving. It’s one thing coming from some indie freaks but Sony has sunk a ton of cash into Bungie and are reportedly kind of annoyed with them already. I guess it coming in ā€œpriced at a premiumā€ is a hedge. September will be here before you know it so not much time to conciliate the design I wouldnt think. I like the way it looks too - sort of a permutation of Durandal with those colors

In some regions, Marathon will reportedly be localized as Snickers.

More Bravely Default. Without spoiling a thirteen years old twist, interesting that this HD Remaster returned to its original Flying Fairy subtitle instead of the better sounding but also less confident Where the Fairy Flies adaptation for the Western market back in the 3DS days.

I wanna replay all those interesting RPGs I remember from yesteryear like BDFF or Suikoden 2 or Devil Summoner Raidou but, boy! there are just too many of them coming out every five minutes.

Didn’t even notice the reversion! Such a lateral choice in the scheme of things. No longer having the weight of introducing a new series or having a year+ between regional releases probably changes the marketing calculus.

Still think this era of rpg re-releases could figure out an abridging feature or two. What if I just read a brief summary about going through the mines of Tinto?

Back in January about DOKAPON! Sword of Fury getting an English release on Steam:

Steam version ended up releasing on its own, but the Switch version quietly released in the US and Europe today (with a 10% discount).

This looks both quite exciting and surprising:

Rumours seem to be going crazy with it being ready to be released next Monday and already talk of it being a day one title on Game Pass.

I think they’ll have to announce something pretty soon before I explode with excitement/disappointment!
