Would it be interesting to tally how many steps you end up taking / distance travelled while walking the show floor, according to whatever device you have that can track that sort of stuff? (your phone will do a decent estimate)
And/or ask other devs or other reporters on their counts also.
I think it might be interesting to (anonymously) poll devs to see how many want to be there / think it is truly worth being there, versus a publisher making them demo or other obligations. Do the indies do it “because everyone says you have to”?

I’m interested in the accessibility measures at the event. I imagine the YouTube Theater has substantial ADA access, but does SGF do anything additional or specific, like a sensory sensitivity room, implement a fragrance policy, etc…? I go to and help plan local events where accessibility is always a concern, and I’m interested in how big, mainstream events consider or ignore it.

So SGF started its in person events in 2021, i was there for the first one. Its in this smallish event space in LA with a lot of steps to get into our out of the buildings. I do believe there are accessible entrances to each building on the lot but they’re not that obvious. I’ve seen disabled folks at these events so accomodations are being made. (And each year they’ve been growing. I haven’t seen sensory rooms there yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were implemented this year.)
But I would say the biggest hinderance to accessibility is the fact that the big publishers have their meetings/interviews/presentations off-site distributed around LA. (For example when I saw Dragon Quest last year it wasn’t at the SGF campus it was in a hotel conference room. Ubisoft’s “Booth” was a theater they rented out.) So you run into issues like folks with wheelchairs having to worry about getting from the City Market Social House (SGF Main Campus) down to the JW Marriot then over to the YouTube Theater and back again and whether or not each stop on the great LA road trip will be accessible to you. Yeah its fun as an out of towner to get to see all these fancy places but i’d really prefer it were a GDC structure where EVERYTHING is in one big place.

Food and drink is a good one. Has marketing like booths or anything for “gaming” equipment (gaming chairs, keyboards, etc.) made its way to SGF yet?

Only Razr. But occasionally there will be bespoke installations. A couple of years ago SGF had a recumbent full-body driving sim controller there and i was way too scared/self conscious to get in it because i thiiink that was 2021 and it was my first SGF (first in person anything video game conference/event id ever done)

Like with the insert credit gaiden episodes I really enjoy vlog / audiolog style content from these types of things. I wanna be there with you and hear your random thoughts while you wander the halls and/or evening events. Usually this captures the kind of stuff I wouldn’t know to ask for but when I get it, it becomes clear that I always wanted it!

Not as bad as you think in terms of smell. The SGF campus is a bunch of outdoor and semi indoor spaces so lots of open doors and just openess in general.
But its FUCKING FREEZING inside and LA aint even all that hot during the day. I frequently feeeze my nips off bc i forget to bring a jacket

The hot topic in games to me right now is the BDS Boycott against Microsoft. I’d love to hear what developers and journalists attending think of it, if they’re taking part in it and a general concensus on this complex world we live in.

Generally are the booths being operated by people who have worked on the game or are they operated by some other company? How hard is it to talk to someone who develops games that are being shown?
Not sure this is the right show but a catalog of any wild peripherals is always appreciated. And a catalog of the worst AI garbage you can find on the floor. And then time how long it takes for the AI people to sincerely say something they’re excited about that is truly depressing
