The GBA appreciation thread

I am playing with a Joey Jr. for work and it is SHOCKINGLY easy to use. I just gotta get myself a decent source of GBA carts (with save ability) and especially a way to make labels. Anyways I turned a crummy old Master System emulator cart into an Apotris cart.

@robinhoodie I want to get one! I just wish the NZD to USD exchange rate wasnā€˜t so horrible. Iā€™ve got a few terrible old bootleg carts that could use a 2nd chance, and it seems like the best way to backup GameBoy Camera photos.

Edit: I bit the bullet and got one!

@hellomrkearns I even reflashed an old bootleg of the Star Ocean GBC translation with the updated bug fix version. I definitely am going to buy one for myself now.

Thank you insert credit for being nice to me in light of this unpopular opinion

Iā€™m facing adversity in all other gaming circles :laughing:

I feel that this only reflects poorly on them though

Always interesting how controversial it is just to say ā€œI prefer the screen the device shipped withā€

you are valid and loved froggy

@treefroggy I get so frustrated by people like that and can only hope they grow out of it.

@treefroggy use case trumps all. You are the sunshine gamer. Original screen was meant for you.

Moto Racer Advance probably has the best scrolling road in a videogame, and you can race dirt bikes against street bikes.

@hellomrkearns nice. my original PokƩmon save is still good.

@hellomrkearns thatā€™s so epicā€¦

Mind if I DL and take it for a spin and see what your pokemans are named? Show me your pokeymans?

@treefroggy go for it! If I remember correctly, I didnā€™t often rename them.

I backed up my GBA saves a while back. Much easier to do if you have a DS and a flash cart.

@hellomrkearns I really have to get my lite working sometime!! I didnā€™t know this was possible.

GBA reflective screen v.nice

@KennyL is there a chance you would do a series like this for neogeo pocket or wonderswan?

@treefroggy Iā€˜d love to but unfortunately noā€¦. Also I wish some one with pro camera and lighting could shoot GBA reflective screen videos. Iā€™m just shooting with cellphone and cheap lights so not optimalā€¦

@KennyL youā€™re doing the hardest part!!ā€“ taking nice enough videos and uploading them.

How about a sponsorship? we can start a non profit and get you some donors. First things on the list will be one of those Ring Lights, and a wonderswan color.

@treefroggy oh man thanks for your support but I really canā€˜t take on that right now ā€¦ Also I already got 1 cp strike for stupid PS1 kamen rider vid so my yt channel could just disappear any moment. I canā€™t take more money for something so ephemeral. I could split out gba/handhelds to different channel to avoid strikes but this whole thing just takes a lot of work and timeā€¦ā€¦ :weary::weary::weary:

@Karasu Iā€˜m pretty sure Yggdra Union was localized by someone who wrote some posts for the original Insert Credit, but Iā€™m blanking on who it was. I think it was a guy who also wrote at 1UP sometimes? God this is killing me.

@Chopemon
Something that I donā€™t see mentioned about Astroboy is its difficulty settings. I played it at the same time as a friend. He played in Normal difficulty, and I played in Hard; and I remember the experience being shockingly different when it came to the bosses. Like, I think in Hard mode there are literally additional phases and patterns to the boss battles. To this day, when people complain about balancing around difficulty modes I say, ā€œThey should just do what Treasure did with Astro Boy and make three completely different scenarios for each boss.ā€

Anyway, Astroboy is definitely in my my top 10 GBA games, and is one of my fave Treasure Games. It gets passed up a lot, because Treasure fans are old heads, but it does everything that Treasure is supposed to be good at. Itā€™s a beat-em-up, run-n-gun, shmup, with giant multi-phase bosses. Itā€™s probably not the best in any one area, but itā€™s damn good in all of them; and it looks fantastic. Also, Iā€™m not a big Tezuka head, but there are a LOT of cute cameos. Really feels like a love letter.

@milo Mega Man Battle Network 1 & 2 are quintessential GBA memories for me. Those were the type of games Iā€˜d play with Saturday morning cartoon reruns playing in the background. I was really surprised by how simple and addicting the battle system was. As a kid, I played almost exclusively JRPGā€™s, but in retrospect there was a lot I didnā€˜t enjoy about them; and today I have kind of a vendetta against the format. I donā€™t remember the full ins-and-outs of the system right now, but in my memory it was almost board-gamey in itā€™s simple elegance.

Thereā€™s a digital rerelease of 1+2 for about $60 on Switch right now. I got it on an impulse, but not sure when Iā€™ll actually play it. Maybe on the plane home for Christmas. Iā€™m almost afraid of the nostalgia waves it might give me.

I spent a not insignificant amount of time just ogling the beautiful art of Magical Vacation on three separate screens (the original unmodified GBA, a Game Boy Micro and up on the big OLED through my MiSTer) and god darn that is a good looking videogame.

Look at this! This is ridiculous! Shinichi Kameoka sure knows how to draw!
