Absolutely. Wonder what this means for Dragon Quest XII as well…
All my childhood… Rest in peace, bird king.
I am very curious what will happen with the newly formed Capsule Corporation, especially seeing them named in this official statement.
Holy crap… rest in peace…

this is so heartbreaking :(
Decided to read all of Berserk this year, which is pretty interesting. I‘ve not read much manga and I often sort of wander off from whatever I’m reading, but Berserk is pretty wild and weird, which is keeping me going.
@“edward”#p157134 Where are you at with it? I read up through volume 15 back in October, am taking a break now but I'll go back in a couple months. What do you find most compelling so far?
@“captain”#p157183
Thats not so easy to answer. I wrote about The Black Swordsman arc here, and I‘d say the thing that keeps you going is sort of what keeps you going in a game like Bloodborne. You’re not sure of the what and why, but there's a wild terror to the whole affair.
Now that I'm in the Golden Age arc (volume 7), I'd say that the friendship between Guts and Griffith is interesting enough. But also seeing how this man started is interesting just because you want to see how we go from Guts as a relatively happy and successful mercenary to one broken apart, hunting for demons.
I can't promise I'll stick with it! But I find it compelling enough so far.
Though listening to @whatsarobot's podcast about Vagabond has made me very interested in this very famous basketball manga.
And I don't even like basketball!
@“edward”#p157184 all manga is like this, but berserk especially in that we see miura’s own talent develop alongside the story.
for example, miura purportedly read a lot of shoujo manga between the black swordsman arc and the golden age arc (which feels much more like the real start of the manga in retrospect). i think that influence shows in that relationship between griffith and guts.
berserk is really good! i hope you stick with it. it even fails in interesting ways later on. golden age through conviction is pretty hard to argue with tho imo.

all manga is like this… talent develop(ing) alongside the story
I love this about manga as well. I think it's somewhat unique to the medium. And while this phenomenon tends to diminish the further an artist gets into their career, and the more entrenched they typically become in their signature style, there's still something exciting about watching the story unfold over a period of time. Real world events, changes in editorial staff, and responses to trends can factor in, in weird and surprising ways.
Some people say it's better to read manga series that are already finished, because you know there's an ending to work toward, but I think that approach misses out on a lot of the fun manga can deliver when you're following a series as it's being published.
@“edward”#p157184 Good point about pain/its absence and its relationship to humanity. I did not much care for the way the story opens (meaning Black Swordsman) and would echo MoH to say stick with it for a bit. Didn't know about Miura reading shoujo material between arcs but it makes sense, the interpersonal stuff becomes much more compelling going forward.
Watching as Miura learns how to better tell the story really is fascinating, and for me makes up the appeal of returning as much as finding out what happens to the characters. Though given the way The Golden Age really becomes _the_ story following the brief previous arc, I do have to wonder where it will go from there
@“MoH”#p157186
Very interesting! That makes sense (though I had to look up what shoujo meant) and, yeah, you can feel a focus on character here that was absent in the Black Swordsman.
The Black Swordsman is helped by the fact it‘s so short. I think if it goes onto a fourth little narrative, it probably breaks to pieces because this episodic style of opaque, bleak, fucked up narrative can only get you so far before it becomes tedious.
Yeah, I’m committed to stick with it though! And I tend to follow through pretty well when I set my mind to projects like this.

This is what most interests me about serial storyteling! So I've always wanted to follow a story as it's released, but I think I just kind of read too mcuh and have too poor of a memory. I think I've mentioned before that I sort of compulsively read, which leads me to read 100+ books a year, so waiting for a year for the next book in a series often means that I have 100 other narratives in between me and the previous book in a series.
But in theory I think this is very cool. Maybe along with this sort of thing I'll just pick a new(_ish_) manga and start reading it as it comes out. Could be fun.
@"captain"#p157191
Yeah, that sort of lopsidedness appeals to me. The narrative is broken down into arcs with the first arc being 8 chapters and the second arc being almost 100...like, what the hell! That by itself is fascinating. At least to me.
@“edward”#p157193 I hear you on the volume of reading and forgetting what you‘ve already read. The nice thing about manga, compared to novels, is that the experience is about more than just reading and remembering the narrative. At least for the manga I enjoy the most, it’s as much about hanging out in the world, with those characters, as it is about remembering and finding out what's happening. That's just me though!
@“whatsarobot”#p157199
No, I think this is exactly the appeal of serialized fiction and why, typically, it's at a more rapid pace (whether weekly or monthly). Like, the appeal of a sitcom, ultimately, is that you enjoy hanging out with these people in this constructed reality. Seinfeld lives on its jokes, sure, but it survives on your ability to hangout with George and Jerry and Elaine and Kramer.
With that in mind, what's a newish manga you'd recommend picking up and trying to follow along as it comes out? I suspect this isn't an easy thing to recommend since not all manga make it and it's difficult to know what's going to be good 20-50 chapters later, but I am interested in trying this out!
@“edward”#p157202 chainsaw man
@“MoH”#p157204
Does seem to be the big new thing! Though it's already 16 volumes! I got some catchin up to do
@“edward”#p157202 Delicious in Dungeon though it’s close to ending.
@“edward”#p157202 For sure, Chainsaw Man is a REAL good one. I second that.
Also, _Tengoku Daimakyo (Heavenly Delusion)_ has that delicious mix of WTF sci-fi and character humour. It's my second-favourite ongoing series.
_Go With the Clouds, North by Northwest_ is also great, and I can see you vibing with it.
My manga reading doesn‘t usually match with the kind of manga people talk about here as I tend to mostly read trashy overtly cheesy romances and yuri but I just finished reading A Sign Of Affection and I found it to be incredibly at how it handles it’s deaf protagonist and sign language in general. It does some truly unique and interesting stuff with it's typesetting and lipreading. And of course I ate up the romance stuff and cute interactions like the big cry baby I am.
An anime adaptation is currently airing and about to wrap its first season, so I can't wait to watch that. The only criticism I've read about it is that crunchy roll put the first episode on youtube without any close captions, which is ironic and disappointing...
@“穴”#p157219 i'm trying to read more stuff outside of my comfy zone and this one seems like a good candidate.
I read _**A Silent Voice**_ years ago and loved it. I wish the movie was a series instead but i was satisfied with the way it came out.
