I’m quite big on the art manga that are kind of sports manga, I include blue period and Blue giant in there too kinda
well when i say reread i mean the first like, 10 or 15 volumes or so, which is usually enough. it’s really dark! i give it my strongest recommendation.
Beck rules! Glad to see it getting some love.
kitkats are usually used as a good wishing little gift, because the romaji ressembles kitto katsu (certain victory), usually handed to exam taking students! this is the first time i saw it used in this circunstance.
My up to current chapter review (158)
I like how this series uses manga romcom sports tropes but not leaning too heavy in any of them.
The training arcs are fast paced. The love polygons are not too dramatic or entangled (so far, at least). There’s loss by injuries, which i’m not a fan of but ok, it resolved fast.
Taiki is a good MC. Good natured, not too spineless to say his feelings when it could leave him in a situation that would put his relationship on a dire spot. Chinatsu is a good heroine, i like how she’s more down to earth and honest with herself, and her love is not unrealistically blind which you see across other series. I like the parallel romance match makings.
I just wish there were more filler in the sports section. Like, there was no ruling explanation whatsoever, badminton or basketball. Of course, it’s not a sports focused series, but i wish at least there was something. Basketball is a popular sport so i’m ok with no explanations, badminton on the other hand is really niche. The trivia on the sport was good though.
I wish the basketball circle was a little more developed. There’s like 3~4 characters at most.
The art is cool, some shots make me think it’s a shoujo and some make me feel it’s def a shounen. Love this mix! There’s no much different stages. The box, the street, the house, the hidden spots. i’m ok with it but i’m a bit worried about the anime.
Overall, i think Blue Box is 8/10!
Yeah, I think some things get sacrificed in favor of the kind of three ships they’re building. I dont mind it but the sports can get a bit confusing in terms of stakes. I think part of that is translation, I remember a line about Haryu not making nationals when he does in fact make nationals, just in doubles?
Reading Kaijū n.8 and it’s ok so far. Chapter 30-ish.
I regret to inform you all the children are upset about the ending of My Hero Academia.
Did it turn out to be someone else’s hero academia?
Reports of there being a hero academia have been greatly exaggerated.
Got up to date with Kaijū n.8
Nothing special. It’s a mid shounen, trope-wise. The monsters’ designs are good and the characters are ok too!
Now this one has been sitting in my list for 13 years now since i saw the season 1 of the anime adaptation. Natsume Yuujinchou is really good. I’m at chapter 10 so far. I’ve cried in chapter 2. This manga is chill as heck. The arcadeism and pacing feels great!
I don’t know how MHA ended, but the spin off MHA Vigilantes was a pretty sweet read.
Apparently the final (english, deluxe) volume of yokohama kaidashi kikou just came out, so I bought the whole run. Definitely seems like it’ll be a cool time, one of those chill vibes with a touch of weirdness manga.
never heard of it but looks cool!
Plugging my post from a while ago about this series for any who haven’t seen it. Such a great series and I am stalking my package tracking on the final volume by the hour to see when it’ll be here lol
YKK is amazing. Plugging anything by Kenji Tsuruta if you want something similar.
I’ve got those Wandering Island volumes ready to read when the mood strikes! (I believe @connrrr recommended them)
Love 2 see more people talking about Kenji Tsuruta and Natsume Yuujinchou
The last manga I tried reading was Hello, Melancholic! and I really didn’t like it. Way too fluffy and tropey, with the main character on the verge of a panic attack literally every page. That got super annoying almost immediately. I need my yuri to be messy and real like Octave. *sigh*
The other month I picked up Colette : mémoires d’une maision close aka Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen by Moyoco Anno and the art is so gorgeous. I haven’t had time to dig into it. I might do that soon!!
I also picked up volume 1 of classic 80s gag manga What’s Michael? for some friends when I was in Toronto and flipping through made me really want to have the collection for myself. There’s at least one translation inaccuracy—a character refers to the Flehmen response as something like “the Fremen response”—but all Makoto Kobayashi’s original insights into what it’s like to live with cats and what weird animals they are are still there on the page.
I’m embarrassed that as big of a Natsume fan as I am I haven’t explored the manga at all! My guess is I have lots of time before season 7 comes out to do that.
i think the jump to the manga is a bit harder because of the art direction. That’s why it took me so long.
I am more of a manga person but i always have a hard time going from the anime to the manga. Some series are easier than others sure
I feel more the mangaka’s soul in the Natsume Yuujinchou manga than i felt in S1 of the anime.
