the long-awaited(???) insert credit manga thread

Firstly, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who was kind enough to share recommendations on a subject I know next to nothing about, it is much appreciated. Having done some research we have decided to go with a few of the following to get him started after the first few Dragon Ball books we ordered:

  • Cowa (it looks awesome and made me chuckle, the concept behind it)
  • Yotsuba&! (granted your description @onnuhhhh may have made it sound childish, but kids should be kids as long as possible so I am very happy to let him read those and enjoy being a kid!)
  • Pokémon: La Grande Aventure (he’s already watched the show, has some trading cards and you cannot escape Pokémon here, all his friends at school are fans so this is something he can enjoy with them - plus it helps with my French as I keep hearing Salamèche and had to learn it was Charmander)
  • One Piece (This was one we weren’t sure about, as I thought it would be for older children but it got sold on the following conversation:

Tom: So I asked my computer friends about manga you can read and they recommended some for you
Little Tom: Which ones?
Tom: Pokémon is very good
Little Tom: They do pokémon books?
Tom: Oh yes. And One Piece. It’s about pirates
Little Tom: PIRATES?!?!?! POKEMON PIRATES!??!
Tom: No just regular pirates, kind of.
Little Tom: I’ll take it!)

Luckily the little library in our little French village actually has a manga section so finding some won’t be as hard as we thought. And you can’t have enough books so we’re happy to buy them for him. He’s gone through some of the classics like Asterix, Titeuf and Marsupilami and wants to go up to Spirou and Gaston Lagaffe, so having something that’s not the usual here for his age is a bonus.

Oh and @exodus I had to check what Captain Tsubasa was, because here it was called Olive et Tom and that’s all I know it as! Sometimes it’s a challenge as many things I grew up with my wife didn’t and vice versa - the amount of manga and anime she knows because it was part of her childhood is scary compared to mine. I only recently learned who the hell Petit Coeur is (That’s for @chazumaru).

Thank you all again, and any more recommendations are always welcome

Gon is wordless (I have an Italian edition just because the box is awesome) and excellent for kids in my opinion. He’s a little asshole dinosaur that sometimes helps!

I haven’t been able to confirm it but if Gegege no Kitaro is available in French I think that’s also a great one for young readers who like spooky stuff.
