The Metal Gear Megathread

@Moon#28476 been reading a bunch of Lovecraft recently and this is uh, definitely there too!

@captain#28431 There are some very minor things which kind of remind me I‘m not playing the original with MGS3HD – consider the mask during the HALO sequence with upres’d text now reading “HIDEO KOJIMA” – but they're very very minor. Peacewalker feels different for sure but I much prefer the remake, although the aim assist is a bit nuts when you have a full TV to line up your shot with.

It's funny though, the real distinct Metal Gear remake is the most easily forgotten: Snake Eater 3D for the 3DS. It has its own lower fidelity yet more stylized look, added crouch-walk, and more camo/masks! The camera controls are unbearable on the old 3ds without the Circle Pad Pro attachment though, so it's a mixed bag. Overall though, it feels so much like Peacewalker, and I would probably suggest it to anyone with the right gear.

@captain#28431 They‘re my preferred versions of all three. Performance is vastly improved, particularly in MGS3 and PW. You lose analog face buttons and a few visual touches, but the overall experience is much better. Once you’ve played PW with a real controller it's hard to go back to PSP.

As someone who played MGS3 with the original Snake Eater camera, the HD version was a revelation in terms of playability. It doesn‘t mess up the balance like the first person mode in Twin Snakes, it’s just straight up the way the game was meant to be played. I also think it‘s the only way to play MGS3 in 60 FPS, but don’t quote me on that.

@Moon#28436 I wish there were more games like the AC!D series. Anybody have recommendations for games like that? Slay The Spire isnt close enough.

There is an Early Access game on steam called [Fights In Tight Spaces](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1265820/Fights_in_Tight_Spaces/) that may fit the bill, depending on how you interpret "games like that".
(disclaimer, I've only watched some video on it and have not played it myself)

@Syzygy#28519 I'm not OK with the fact that this downplays his majestic protuberant nose in MGSV

@Official_Danimalz#28509 Yeah, the crouch walk in MGS3DS is like first-person aiming in Twin Snakes, I imagine it changes the game hugely (only played the demo; the 3DS I have is the non-New XL, so no hope of playing it with good camera controls on there).

@christoffing#28511 a revelation in terms of playability

True, the full-3D view does change how you play. I played the HD version first and had the opposite experience—I didn't know it allowed you to switch back to the original camera (don't know how, I usually press all the buttons in games), so I [missed](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/035/423/maxresdefault_(20).jpg) some of the [cooler](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/O3Z5UGE3g5M/maxresdefault.jpg) camera angles they put in there.

@captain#28596 Worry not, with 3ds emulation and a proper controller one day we‘ll all be able to play the super-not-definitive version of the game we’ve all played way too many times already! Also worth noting that the full-3D camera actually pops up in Subsistence I believe, and the HD version just cleans up that version a bit (while removing the Ape Escape stuff).

@Official_Danimalz#28648 while removing the Ape Escape stuff

Much to my displeasure. I've tried to keep my eye out in second-hand places for a copy of Subsistence but no one ever sells it! And quite right about the camera innovation being there and not in the HD version.

I HATED the Subsistence camera at the time, and I don‘t really know why - it’s so obviously the best way to play the game. Maybe it was over-familiarity with the original version? Anyway, it look until MGS4 for me to not be an idiot and enjoy it.

I never bought Subsistence, I had the original release of MGS3 and played through that.

So for me, the "new" camera in MSG4 was interesting and cool!
I've never done a Subsistence playthrough, I wonder how different it would feel. For me, my memories of MSG3 are inexorably linked to that classic MGS camera / viewpoint. That doesn't make it _better_, it is just what I am familiar with.

@Syzygy#29899 Logged onto IC this very moment to come find this thread and report that it's $9 on PSN (I bought it).

Ohhhhh hard call - is it worth $9?? I had always thought this game was a laughing stock but people here like it and that’s really shocked me.

Buy it? Don’t buy it? I need help.

might be worth $9 for more time with the fox engine…

@CidNight#29916 $9? Buy two copies.

@Thanatos#29947 Turns out it's way better for ball physics than the Frostbite engine, make of that what you will.

@Syzygy#30511 I have met Gouda! Although the first scene he‘s in doesn’t show him boarding a helicopter, unless I somehow missed it. Very intrigued by this Skull Face connection, which is already apparent in the character‘s general comportment even if he hasn’t revealed anything about himself yet.

let’s not forget that the opening of MGS2

Can't believe I forgot about that, yes
