This Odyssey isn't going to Etrian itself

I was on a very stressful international business trip in 2018 and that's when I played EOV and anytime

@“X3N0Sbioz”#p129807 this song plays

I think of being in or en route to work in China.

@“gsk”#p123493 …and the English update is already live, check it:

Two updates on this:

  • -

Kemco just announced they're bringing it to consoles (as “Metro Quester”), more info at TGS

  • -

the devs are crowdfunding a sequel on JP crowdfunding site Kibidango from late September (they'll probably kick it off at TGS, even)

I’m sort of back in the swing of things. Leveling up my respecc’d team by doing all the seafaring missions I skipped and couldn’t figure out, as well as some of the bar missions I skipped also. And Basically walking through the entire dungeon up to this point multiple times.

I do really like the bosses of the oceanic quests, now that I’ve finally figured out how to reach them. I like that they are isolated bosses you can grind with zero risk. It’s also nice to have guest party members for a change, and learn how some of the more obscure jobs are meant to work, augmenting then into your team for one fight. This could also open your eyes to a party tweak you hadn’t thought of before!

This is the first I've seen or heard of this NiS take on Etrian Odyssey

Anyways I played EOIII a bit on the train yesterday. Still stuck in the same place, grinding up re-spec'd characters and doing sub quests.

I am here to confirm my new hyper-contrarian opinion that *Etrian Odyssey* and *Etrian Odyssey II* are both better and more enjoyable than *Etrian Odyssey III*, 😂

@“treefroggy”#p134268 I‘ve had the first game, Labyrinth of Refrain, aggressively staring at me to just play it for several years. It’s perpetually near the top of my “I wish I had time but other games” list.

thinking again about those 3ds remakes, and how I’d probably enjoy them quite a bit now that I’ve beaten the first two games!!

I‘ve spent a couple of hours on Quester, mentioned earlier in the thread, and I’m having a pretty good time with it. Battles are super breezy and have a neat resource mechanic where you can only do certain things unless you have the resources for it, like say, firing a gun or healing. Resources are replenished after each battle and the maximum amount can be increased through means that I have yet to encounter.

Each turn consists of allowing your party members to be able to do up to three actions depending on how many action points each action uses. Commands are also saved between battles, and the whole setup makes battles fly. It's neat.

My only reservation with it is that there's no explanation for the weapon modifying system; whether I should be saving or dismantling items or not, all which are seemingly found randomly in the map. If there was a bit more clarity or handholding on that then I'd be more comfortable with exploring more, and more confident against tougher enemies.

It's cool though and it scratches the EO itch a little even if you don't get to customise your party at the start, instead finding characters of different classes as you explore.

    Oh hey, Etrian odyssey thread

I have finished all three of the games in the HD remaster. It’s great.

I like the original trilogy a lot, but if I had to break it down, EOII is the coolest. I love the amateur character design in the first game, and number 3 has cool refined designs but the dual class system trips me up a lot and I find it annoying that your healer class has to be a martial artist. The hd remaster does a great with allowing you to use any portrait you want for any character, it helped me out a lot…

I remember now why I really didn’t want to start with EOIV back in 2012. I appreciate its departures from the formula a lot more as the fourth game in the series!

I love the return to a green menu scheme, the overall evolution of the art design, and the air balloon voyage system is a huuuuge improvement over the ocean :ocean: surveying of EOIII, which in my opinion was bummer city and it seemed like the game was too scaled around it.

I‘ll be getting onto EO3 in the nearish future once I’ve got a nice chunk of time to jump into it. It‘s the only one that I’ve not played (though I haven‘t played much of Nexus either) and it’d be a nice chill game to play at my partner‘s place whilst she plays on her PC. I say, “chill”, in as much as chill can be for EO (music yes, scary FOEs, no). I had a blast with EO2 with the PC port and I’m looking forward to 3 once I get through the glut of meaty games I've got going on at the moment.

Yup This is definitely NOT the Live 2023 Etrian Odyssey Concert

the tenor sax is so good she is crushing it. she switches to a freakin digital aerophone for the battle theme, insane. then she pulls out an alto sax. absolutely steals the show.

    and love the acoustic guitar

    on point hella,

edit: just noticed yuzo koshiro is there, there are two keyboard players

Hey fellow EO-likers! An IRL friend suggested I try Labyrinth of Galleria to get my dungeon crawler fix. Anybody here try it so far? I‘ve played and enjoyed Labyrinth of Refrain, so I’m guessing just more of that kind of thing?

I've been casting around for a new 100 hour mess to get bogged down in, and I'm thinking this might just be it.

@“Karasu”#p155026 Had to look this one up, and while “Nippon Ichi” gives me pause, it is very clearly EO-inspired, and I am very intrigued to learn that it's rated M (for mature!). Any idea why that might be the case?

@“whatsarobot”#p155044 I’m not sure, but in the previous game there are some extremely dark story moments. Like dark dark. And some of the enemy designs are pretty horny. Presumably this game gets dark too?

My main interest is that I’ve heard Galleria is kind of like an even more complex EO game. I’m mixed on most Nippon Ichi stuff too, the sense of humour in most of those games is pretty tired.

@“Karasu”#p155050 Iiiinteresting. Yeah, exactly. In my mind, Nippon Ichi + Rated M for Mature does not exactly = Something Good. But based on your description, I'm now even more intrigued.

@“whatsarobot”#p155053 I mean I highly recommend Labyrinth of Refrain! The NI cruft stuff didn’t really bother me, and the mechanics were interesting!

@“Karasu”#p155058 Cool! Thanks for the recommendation. If only I could play it on a clam shell handheld…
